6/17 Twilling's ECW Live Coverage: Kane and Big Show confront each other, C.M. Punk vs. John Morrison
By Rich Twilling Jun 17, 2008 - 10:01 PM

ECW on The SciFi Network
Taped 6/17/08 in San Jose, CA

[Q1] The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Mike Adamle and Tazz welcomed us to the show. They plugged a confrontation between Kane and Big Show as well as C.M. Punk vs. John Morrison…

1. Hornswoggle defeated Armando Estrada in 2:01. Hornswoggle broke one of Estrada’s cigars and threw it at him. He led Armando on a chase and tripped over a bunch of marbles outside of the ring.

Horny sprayed him with a water gun and left the ring again. He crawled underneath the ring and Armando reached under there for him. Finlay surprised Armando with another water gun. He threw Armando back into the ring. Horny hit the tadpole splash for the win…

After the match, Tazz interviewed Finlay and asked him what was underneath the ring. Finlay said there were leprechauns, hobbits, and people of all sizes. Finlay and Hornswoggle danced in the ring… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Honestly, that was a waste of time. I guess it is fun and it gives Finlay something to do when he really isn’t involved in a program, but it is awfully lacking in sensible direction.

A WWE.com exclusive showed Layla dancing during the break. At least they didn’t waste show time with that…

2. Evan Bourne defeated Matt Striker in 2:33. Adamle and Tazz plugged the money giveaway. Bourne tried to springboard from the apron onto Striker, but Striker caught him and hit a swinging neckbreaker.

[Q2] Bourne broke a neck vice with what looked to be a dropkick, but he hit Striker with knees instead. Innovative move. Bourne went to the top and hit a shooting star press for the win. After the match, Mike Knox attacked and laid out Bourne… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Bourne is one reason why they should reinstate and push the Cruiserweight Championship. He hits amazing high spot moves, but they have meaning to them. That shooting star press was awesome. Billy Kidman could not do one that well in his wildest dreams.

Knox remained in the ring and waited for his opponent, Kofi Kingston…

3. Kofi Kingston defeated Mike Knox by disqualification in 2:56. Adamle said, “Knox told me he does not even like himself.” He didn’t follow up or anything. Nice job Mike.

Kofi dropkicked Knox’s knee but Knox recovered and threw Kofi headfirst into the turnbuckle. Kofi was able to reverse a number of power moves and finally turn things around. He hit a frogsplash high crossbody onto Knox.

Shelton Benjamin’s music hit and he came down and attacked Benjamin, ending the match. Shelton tried to kick Kofi but missed and kicked Knox instead. Shelton and Kofi stared each other down as Kofi headed to the back. Adamle called them the Ali and Frazier of ECW. Knox and Shelton briefly argued about what happened…

Kane and Show’s confrontation was plugged… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: One has to wonder how long they can continue the Kofi vs. Shelton feud and what exactly they can do with it. They could a best of five or something like that.

[Q3] They showed an extra long video of the money giveaway, complete with a brand new rap song. Holy crap this is a long recap…

Backstage, Hornswoggle was playing around with Tiffany. Teddy Long gave Finlay and Hornswoggle a contract for the tag team title match at the PPV. Tiffany said they could be split up in the draft. Horny signed with a giant green marker. Tiffany tried to take the contract, but Horny bit her.

Miz came in and asked if Teddy was serious about giving Finlay and Hornswoggle a title shot. Finlay knocked him down with the shillegleh and hardly placed the contract in his chest…

C.M. Punk came out for his match against John Morrison… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Does anyone not read WWE.com? Miz was surprised about the title match even though we all knew about it for awhile now. I cannot believe an entire segment consisted of a McMahon money recap, a backstage skit with Hornswoggle, and a ring entrance. At least Tiffany is smoking hot.

4. C.M. Punk defeated John Morrison in 9:35. Did Tazz just say one of the winners last night is 15 years old? Are you serious? Shouldn’t there be a rule about that?

Punk and Morrison exchanged punches and slaps before they started wrestling. The action was very quick and physical. With Punk on the apron, Morrison leg swept him and followed it up with a sliding dropkick, sending Punk to the floor.

[Q4] Morrison worked on the midsection of Punk. He applied a hold driving his knee into Punk’s side. Punk kicked his way out of the hold. Morrison applied the hold again, this time to the other side. Morrison suplexed Punk across the top rope and drove kick after kick into his midsection.

Punk picked up Morrison for a GTS, but Morrison slithered out and kneed Punk very hard in the ribs. He viciously continued to pound on the area. Morrison applied a leg scissors submission. Punk picked him up and hit a swinging leg spin.

After a couple of exchanges, Punk hit a nice snap powerslam for a nearfall. Morrison hit a knee to Punk’s face. Adamle said, “Quick thinking by John Morrithon.” Tazz said he thought Adamle was doing a Dusty Rhodes impression. Funny.

From the apron, Morrison kicked Punk in the ribs. He tried the sunset flip over the top into the pinning combination, but Punk caught him and hit the GTS for the win. Punk celebrated and Tazz wondered out loud when he would cash in the briefcase…

On the stage, Miz was icing his jaw, and Morrison was laying on his ass. Miz announced Morrison as still one half of the tag team champions. He said he and his partner would retain at Night of Champions… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Decent match. I love how Morrison focused on one part of the body, but it was slow and plodding at times. That much offense by Morrison would have worked better in a match that lasted six or seven more minutes, giving Punk more time to recover.

Teddy Long stood midring and looked like he was reading cue cards. He introduced both Big Show and Kane. Tazz called Kane the most dominant champion of both the original and the new ECW.

[Overrun] Show said he and Kane have been opponents and tag team champions, but he was taking back the ECW title. Kane put over Show for everything that he is, but he will not be the ECW champion again. Show said he would go through hell to win the match. Kane said hell was standing right in front of him.

They went face to face and Mark Henry’s music hit. Henry said Kane and Show needed to save their strength, because if he wasn’t drafted to Raw, he would go after the winner of the match. Show and Kane double chokeslammed Henry and jawed at each other as the show went off the air…

Twill’s Two Cents: Remember when ECW was supposed to be where the young guys cut their teeth? Kane as ECW Champion is not a bad thing because he is a good locker room guy for the young stars. However, we had Chavo before him and now whether he or Show wins, Mark Henry is next in line? The sad thing is, Mark Henry will probably get a PPV title match. Now that would be hell.

What did you think of the show? Feel free to let me know. Rich Twilling can be reached at dotnetrich@gmail.com.
