Smackdown on The CW Network
Taped on 6/7/08 in Fresno, Calif.
[Q1] The show opened with Vickie Guerrero in the ring trying to announce the contract signing for the World Heavyweight Championship. She once again drew mad heat. She is so over it’s sick. She introduced Batista first who came to the ring. Vickie offered him a seat but Batista just stared at her. She showed Batista that Edge had already signed the contract and as General Manager, it was now her turn. It is the thickest stack of paper I have ever seen.
She told Batista that she had made on small change to it since his attorney’s read it. He now had to win one more match tonight against The Great Khali to be number one contender. Batista said no problem. He said he beat Khali before and he’s been Champion before and he’ll do both again. He said “The only thing uglier than Edge’s chances at Night of Champions is the woman he’s marrying.” Funny.
He signed the contract and stormed off. Vickie stopped him halfway up the ramp and said there was a second change he didn’t read. She told him if he lost tonight he would be banned from the WWE…[C]
Shore’s Slant: That worked well. Vickie gains more heat (wow) and Batista looks like a meathead. If he loses I will bow to the creative team. Of course that won’t happen. But how cool would that be? Then the board would get on Vickie again and…wait…what am I saying? That would suck. Leave Vickie alone, I like her bad!
Back from commercial and as Finlay made his way to the ring, a video aired showing Miz and Morrison talking backstage. Hornswoggle was heard laughing for like 10 minutes before they showed him laughing and pointing. Finlay walked up and said he and Hornswoggle wanted the Tag Championships…
1. John Morrison defeated Finlay at 5:25. At 2:00 the action went outside and Finlay ended up spearing Miz with Hornswoggle. Good back and forth action for a while. Both these guys are good workers.
[Q2] At 5:15 Miz pulled Hornswoggle out from under the ring. Finlay went to help Hornswoggle. Morrison rolled him up while distracted for the win…
Post match, Cole asked if this would be the last night we saw Batista. If so, they wanted to honor him. A video aired of Batista’s win at the 2005 Royal Rumble…[C]
Shore’s Slant: I guess they can explain these highlights being ready as Vickie set them up knowing the provision was in the contract. I still would like to see Batista lose as it would flabbergast the world of wrestling. We all know it wouldn’t last, but nobody would have taken the bet that Taker and Batista would be banned, even temporarily, within weeks of each other.
Back from commercial, Eve asked Edge what he thought about Batista’s match tonight. He said he hoped Batista won so he could beat him at Night of Champions. He said the vignettes of Batista tonight were his doing. He said he wanted to honor Batista like he honored that other guy he got banned. He acted like he forgot his name and then remembered. He started to say something else when CM Punk walked up.
Punk said he was a hopeless romantic and wanted to wish Edge and Vickie well for their wedding. He also wanted to remind him that he could cash in Money in the Bank at any time he wanted, even at the wedding. He walked off leaving Edge pissed…
2. Mark Henry squashed Tommy Dreamer in 2:30. As Henry made his way to the ring, they showed a taped interview of Henry. He showed a picture of Big Show and his black eye. He showed another picture of Big Show with the other eye Photoshopped to look like the bad one. He said that was what Show would look like if he got in Henry’s way. I have no words for this match. Why is Tommy Dreamer still around jobbing to guys like Henry? Retire or go indy or something. I can’t stand to watch it…
[Q3] Backstage, Vickie was shown talking to some lady. Edge came in and Vickie introduced him to the girl, their wedding planner. Edge said that CM Punk got in his face. MVP burst in and said he wanted his contract renegotiated. He said he watched Smackdown last week and he is certain he is the most talented on the staff. Edge jumped in and argued with MVP. Vickie said she would consider renegotiating if he handled CM Punk tonight. MVP agreed…[C]
Shore’s Slant: A word of warning, if this happens to be MVP’s push for the gold, you're about to see some serious man-love from the writers on this site.
Back from commercial, a video aired of last week’s Golden Dreams match that Natalya won. Back to ringside, Maryse made her way to the ring. Cole said that Vickie would be watching the divas over the next few weeks to decide who would face Natalya…
3. Cherry defeated Maryse at 2:42. A weak match that was mostly controlled by Cherry. The spots looked way over choreographed. Cherry hit a single arm DDT for the win…
Post match Cole and Foley plugged the Batista/Khali match later. A video aired that made Khali look like the unstoppable force…
MVP was shown backstage making his way to the ring…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Doesn’t look like it’ll be Cherry or Maryse in the championship match. Does anyone think it will be anybody except McCool.
4. MVP defeated CM Punk by DQ at 18:45. [Q4] The match started out with a waist lock by Punk for about a minute and a headlock by MVP for about a minute. After a brief flurry of activity, MVP took control and applied different slams followed by rest holds on the left arm of Punk. At 7:30, Punk regained control and applied head scissors.
[Q5] MVP regained control but missed an elbow in the corner. Punk went to spear him but MVP moved and Punk went to the post with his shoulder. MVP ran Punk into the post on his shoulder two more times before climbing out of the ring and hitting it a third time on the post. [C]
Back from commercial at the 12:40 mark and MVP is still in control. The crowd is either asleep or the acoustics are terrible as there is no crowd noise. MVP continued to work on the left arm.
Wait, a small CM chant…and they’re back asleep. At 15:50, Punk hit a clothesline reversal to take control. Punk hit several kicks and knees. Punk went to the top rope and MVP dropkicked the rope to stun Punk. Punk fought off MVP and went for an elbow drop but MVP got his knees up.
MVP pulled the cover off a turnbuckle and started to drag Punk to it. Referee Charles Robinson saw it and went to put it back on. While his back was turned MVP picked up the MIB briefcase. MVP turned around and Punk hit the high knee to the briefcase to the face. He caught the briefcase as MVP fell. Robinson turned around; saw MVP knocked out and Punk with the briefcase. He called for the bell and DQed Punk. Post match MVP celebrated as he limped back stage…
A video aired recapping the Undertaker’s loss at One Night Stand. Cole and Foley compared it to tonight’s Batista match…[C]
Shore’s Slant: Are you f-ing kidding me? Almost 19 minutes for a DQ? And a DQ that made MVP look like a punk. What did that serve? I swear I hope MVP gets traded. He needs the spotlight of Raw.
[Q6] Back from commercial and Chavo and Bam Neely stood in the ring. Chavo said his name…It doesn’t matter what…ehem…and said he was going to be Edge’s best man. He introduced the man he would face at Night of Champions for the United States Championship, Matt Hardy. Hardy came to the ring slowly, looking confused. Chuck “Slash” Palumbo came out next. Oh, this is a match…
5. Matt Hardy defeated Chuck Palumbo at 3:25. After a short give and take, Palumbo took control and hit a few power moves on Hardy. At 2:30, Palumbo missed a back splash. Hardy hit the side effect for a one count. He hit an elbow from the second rope and then an ugly Twist of Fate for the win. Chavo announced Hardy as “the winner of the match and the loser of the United States Championship…”
A video aired of Batista winning the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 21. The announcers once again plugged the match as possibly Batista’s last…[C]
Shore’s Slant: That was a really ugly finish. I love how we are just pulling feuds out of thin air. Hardy’s first title feud is Chavo Guerrero? How about some of the other guys? Wasn’t Chavo just a world champion? It’s too soon to downgrade him to the US title without him looking weak.
Back from commercial and a video recapped the McMahon Million Dollar Mania from Monday night. The video made it seem smooth and fun. It wasn’t…
[Q7] Backstage Eve asked Vladimir Kozlov if he was worried about facing stiffer competition. Koslov said something impressive in Russian and then said thank you and walked off…
A video aired of Batista winning the World Title at the 2007 Survivor Series against King Booker…[C]
Back from commercial Jesse and Festus came to the ring. Cole asked what would happen if Jesse and Festus were drafted on separate shows. Deuce and Domino were out next sans Maryse.
6. Jesse and Festus defeated Deuce and Domino at 3:52. The bell rang and Festus went nuts but Jesse started. It took Deuce all of 30 seconds to take control. Domino tagged in and hit Jesse. At some point, Jesse started bleeding the hard way. At 3:00, Jesse fought off both DnD and tagged in Festus. Festus squashed everything that moved and pinned Domino for the win.
Post match, Deuce and Domino argued and then started brawling. It wasn’t a “break up” fight, more of heated quarrel. Wow, that sounded really bad. Domino rolled out of the ring and they yelled at each other as Domino made his way up the ramp…
A video aired of Khali beating Batista with his double claw head squash….
Backstage they did the Andre shot of Khali headed to the ring…[C]
Shore’s Slant: First they dump Cherry, then they dump each other. I don’t know that I like either one as a singles competitor yet but maybe. I want to see more tag teams, not less, so this upsets me a little if the split continues.
7. Batista defeated the Great Khali at 4:57. [Q8] Edge rolled Vickie onto the ramp distracting Batista right after the bell rang and Khali took control. Khali hit the big boot to knock Batista out of the ring. After a headbutt knocked Batista down again, Khali threw him in the ring and hit high impact move after high impact move. Batista was thrown to the corner but he stopped and climbed the rope. Khali caught him when he jumped of and hit the Khali bomb for a two count.
Khali went for the chop but Batista caught it. Khali slung Batista away. Khali went for a clothesline but Batista ducked and came off the ropes with a spear for the win out of nowhere. Post match Batista celebrated and stared down Edge from the ring as the show went off…
Shore’s Slant: Typical Khali match, nothing of much value. Weird how one spear beat Khali, and suddenly too. I guess they’re setting up Batista as the super powerhouse again. The show was mediocre at best. After Raw, it was a bad week for the main WWE shows. Let’s hope it gets better next week. Now go register for the millions.
