3/25 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: WrestleMania rewind match, Intercontinental Title match, Undertaker address Triple H, and Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian in a rematch
Mar 25, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on 3/22/11 in Columbus, Ohio.

[Q1] A video recapped the Alberto Del Rio and Brodus Clay beat down on Edge last week. Edge was backstage arguing with Teddy Long. Edge complained about it being unfair and they bickered until Teddy said enough. He said if Edge or Del Rio so much as touched one another, they would both be banned from WrestleMania 27…

The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Josh Matthews, Michael Cole and Booker T welcomed us to Smackdown. Rey Mysterio made his ring entrance followed by CM Punk. A video recapped the Punk/Randy Orton spot from Raw…

1. Rey Mysterio defeated CM Punk by disqualification at 8:11. Punk bounced around for Rey to start and then ducked a springboard cross body to take control. Rey slipped out of an abdominal stretch and tossed Punk to the floor, but when he went to follow Punk slammed him into the wall…[C]

Back at 5:10, CM Punk worked a body scissor as a video recapped the slam on the wall before the break. Rey elbowed out, but Punk hit a cross body for two. Punk went to the top and tried for another, but Rey dropkicked him out of the air.

[Q2] Mysterio spilled Punk to the floor and followed with a moonsault. Cody Rhodes ran out and drove Rey into the post, causing the DQ. He beat the hell out of Rey and then set him in the corner. He pulled up one pant leg to reveal a knee brace and then drove it into Rey's face in the corner. Cody left the ring taking swipes at the camera men like he was Frankenstein's monster or something…

Backstage, Christian and Edge talked about Edge being hurt and maybe he shouldn't be there. Edge said he was going to show the world that nothing was going to stop him at WrestleMania…The announce team hyped Undertaker's appearance for later…[C]

Shore's Slant: Booker T ruined the Cody Rhodes attacked because he started to say, "Rey took a pole to the face," and I guess decided he didn't like the way it sounded and stumbled all over his words trying to change it. I have to say though, I'm really digging the new Cody Rhodes character.

2. Edge defeated Drew McIntyre at 2:25. Edge attacked McIntyre quickly, but McIntyre kicked the wrapped arm and went to work. Edge tried to fight back and hit an Edgecution, but sold the arm instead. McIntyre tried to hit the future shock, but Edge back dropped out. McIntyre held on and tried for a sunset flip, but Edge reversed into his version of the Sharpshooter for the win. Post-match Edge hit the spear on McIntyre…

Shore's Slant: Yawn. Two minute matches are better than nothing, but only barely. Could Drew McIntyre be on the cut bubble? It sure seems possible.

[Q3][C] The Undertaker vs. Triple H hype video aired…Kelly Kelly and Rosa Mendes made their ring entrance…[C]

[Q4] A video recapped the inter-gender match from Raw. LayCool made their entrance. Layla was done up like Snooki, complete with spray tan, poof hair style, slippers, and a shit load of hair spray.

3. LayCool defeated Kelly Kelly and Rosa Mendes at 1:08. LayCool did the Snooki dance/fist pump and the babyfaces attacked. Kelly and McCool spilled to the floor and McCool did the Christian self-slam into the wall and then kicked Kelly with the boot. Layla hit her neckbreaker in the ring on Rosa for the win. Post-match they cut a typical LayCool promo on Snooki and her partners in their WrestleMania 27 match…

A video recapped the Corre attack on Kane and Big Show last week. A split screen showed Kofi Kingston and Wade Barrett headed toward the ring…[C]

Shore's Slant: The gimmick was cut until they started talking. I just hate LayCool's act so much now it's not even funny.

The Corre made their ring entrance and Kofi Kingston followed…

4. Wade Barrett (w/The Corre) defeated Kofi Kingston for the Intercontinental Championship at 5:19. Kofi started fast and furious, but he went to climb the turnbuckle and Barrett kicked his feet out. He tied Kofi in the ropes and then kicked him to the floor in a great looking spot.

[Q5] Barrett rolled Kofi in the ring and hit a big sideslam for two and worked the back. Barrett hit a body slam and went to the second rope. Kofi moved on the elbow drop and hit a standing dropkick. Barrett ducked a Superman punch and hit a back kick. Kofi slipped out of a pump handle lift and hit the pendulum kick and the cross body from the top for two.

Kofi hit the boom drop and setup for Trouble in Paradise. Justin Gabriel distracted the ref and Heath Slater tried to interfere. Kofi hit TIP on him and the went for it on Barrett. Barrett ducked and caught Kofi in mid-air and hit Wasteland for the win. Post-match Gabriel hit the 450 on Kofi before Barrett was announced as the new champion…

Backstage, Teddy had a similar conversation with Del Rio that he had with Edge earlier. Del Rio said Teddy didn't have the guts to ban him from WrestleMania 27. Teddy said there had been 26 WrestleManias without Del Rio and there could easily be a 27th. Del Rio smiled and walked off…Undertaker was hyped for next…[C]

Shore's Slant: Very good, if short, match with Barrett and Kofi. The ending was awesome. It was the most fluid thing I have ever seen. They must have been working on that for a while. I'm not sure how happy I am about Kofi dropping the title, and I hope this doesn't mean he's on the cut bubble as well.

Undertaker made his long ass entrance. I had a minor kid emergency (everything is OK) and missed the whole promo. From Jake Barnett's coverage:

"The Undertaker stood on the ramp to give his speech. He said Triple H has convinced himself that he has the equation to eradicate the Undertaker, and has the confidence to break the streak. Taker then said when he heard Triple H on Raw, he said he heard the confidence turning to uncertainty, and then will become despair.

[Q6] He then said Triple H will realize that the words “die trying” are more real than he could ever imagine, and will be the epitaph on his tombstone. He looked forward to this Monday on Raw, when he will tell Triple H all of this face to face. He then said Triple H will put all of his success, fame, and livelihood on the line to become a number. He then said Triple H’s number is 19, and walked backstage"...[C]

Shore's Slant: Sounds like I didn't miss much.

The Sin Cara hype video aired…Jack Swagger made his ring entrance as Cole acted stupid. A video recapped Cole putting the An-Cole lock on Jerry Lawler on Raw. R-Truth made his long ass entrance and Cole mocked him…

5. Jack Swagger defeated R-Truth at 2:57. Swagger went right at Truth as the announce team bickered with one another. Cole climbed on top of his table and talked smack to both Truth and the other announcers. Truth came back and spilled Swagger to the floor. Truth seemed to botch a dive and sold his leg as hurting.

He rolled Swagger in the ring and went to the top, Swagger knocked him down and worked the leg before finally putting the ankle lock on for the win. Post-match, Swagger held the hold while Cole did a rap for Truth. It went, "My name's R-Truth and I just tapped to Jack. Somethingsomethingsomething cause I'm just whack. What's up!" He and Swagger took a victory lap to end the segment…[C]

Shore's Slant: I died when Cole started rapping that's why I missed the one line. Hilarious! I never thought I would say it, but I'm completely looking forward to his match at WrestleMania 27.

[Q7] The Raw Rebound video recapped the Miz and John Cena's moment. The announce team ran down the major matches on the WrestleMania 27 card…Alberto Del Rio made his ring entrance with Brodus Clay…[C]

[Q8] 6. Christian (w/Edge) defeated Alberto Del Rio (w/Brodus Clay) at 12:19. Christian went to work fast and back dropped Del Rio over the corner to the floor. He went to the top and hit a cross body from there to the floor. Edge and Brodus looked on…[C]

Back at 6:00, Christian hit his corner Sunset flip for two and then clotheslined Del Rio over the top. Christian slid to the floor and Del Rio slammed him against the wall and then the stairs. He rolled Christian in the ring and hit a senton on the arm for two.

Del Rio continued to work the arm and set Christian in the corner. Christian fought back and hit a hurricanranna for two. He went to the top and tried for a cross body from the top. Del Rio moved and Christian crashed. Del Rio tried for the enziguri kick, but Christian ducked and hit a tornado DDT. He covered, but Ric Rod put a foot on the rope to break the count.

Edge attacked Ric Rod, but Brodus attacked Edge. Del Rio hit the enziguri for two and Edge hit a spear on Clay. He got a chair and hit Clay with it to take him out. In the ring, Del Rio was going to lock on the arm breaker, but he stopped and looked at Edge. Christian took the distraction and hit the Kill Switch for the win.

Post-match, Edge climbed in the ring with the chair. He started to hit Del Rio but Christian snatched the chair away. He admonished Edge and then realized he was holding the chair. He whacked Del Rio on the back and Del Rio rolled to the floor. Edge got in his face and talked smack as Christian kept them from touching…

Shore's Slant: Solid, if uninspiring, main event. They are taking heat off Del Rio but not putting it on Edge. That's a strange plan, especially after we had the "Del Rio is strong" story that was working well. I guess we'll see the last of this next week and maybe get a hint what Christian's role at WrestleMania 27 will be.
