3/11 Shore's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Michael Cole interviews John Cena, Triple H talks about the Undertaker, and Edge and Christian reunite for a tag match
Mar 11, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on 3/8/11 in Houston, Texas.

[Q1] The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Michael Cole, Josh Matthews and Booker T checked in on commentary. They hyped Triple H's promo for later…Edge made his ring entrance and a video recapped the contract signing last week.

Edge asked Alberto Del Rio if he really thought a busted nose was going to stop him. He screamed, "Do you know who I am?" Edge said he wasn't interested in a match tonight, he wanted to fight, He said if Del Rio didn't come out right now, he would find him wherever he is.

Del Rio's music hit and he and Brodus Clay walked slowly to the ring. Del Rio asked if Edge knew who he was. Edge said he was the Ricky Martin look a-like who was trying to restart Menudo. Nice line. Del Rio said he was the man who was going to replace Edge's legacy with his destiny.

They climbed in the ring and Del Rio said he would be the new World Champion. Edge attacked Del Rio and then Brodus. He turned back to Del Rio and Brodus clubbed him. Del Rio stomped Edge and then Del Rio slammed Edge into the post shoulder first. Christian ran out for the save and managed to tackle Del Rio, but Brodus assaulted him and the heels worked over the babyfaces. Teddy Long's music hit and he booked Clay and Del Rio vs. Edge and Christian…Michael Cole put over that he had an interview with John Cena later tonight…[C]

Shore's Slant: MONSTER match. Has it really been 10 years since Edge and Christian last teamed? Wow, these guys are older than I realized. I mean, I knew their age intellectually, but it never clicked until now. Still, it'll be nice to see them together again, and Del Rio and Brodus provide a good team to work with.

[Q2] Kane made his ring entrance and a video recapped his match with Big Show, and Corre's run-in last week. Wade Barrett was out next and he cut a promo on Kane making mistakes. He said Kane first didn't appreciate their having worked together in the past. He said his second mistake was putting his hands on Justin Gabriel last week…

1. Kane defeated Wade Barrett by disqualification at 0:42. Barrett went right at Kane and beat him down in the corner. Kane fought back and Corre ran out to cause the DQ. Big Show came out with a chair and chased Corre off…[C]

Shore's Slant: What, no follow up? Well that's kind of stupid. What an odd timed commercial break.

2. Kane and Big Show defeated Wade Barrett and Heath Slater by disqualification in 4:00. The match was joined in process and we were told it was booked during the break. Show was in the ring with Slater. He destroyed Slater and then tossed him in the corner to tag Wade. Show beat the hell out of Barrett and grabbed the throat for the chokeslam.

Barrett escaped and hit a chop block. He worked the leg till Show was on the mat and then tagged in Slater. Slater hit several kicks and covered for one. Show fought back and got the hot tag to Kane. Kane worked his offense and hit a side slam on Slater. He knocked Barrett down and setup for the chokeslam. Gabriel ran in and attacked Kane causing the DQ.

Post-match, Show got a chair and nailed Zeke on the back. He tossed the chair to Barrett and then punched him in the face through the chair. He chased the rest of Corre away and then hit Kane with the chair…

[Q3] Rey Mysterio was shown backstage getting ready…[C]

Shore's Slant: So we got a lame DQ to get a lame DQ? Wow. This angle is terrible.

Back from commercial, Cole hyped his interview with John Cena again, and then Booker T setup the video that recapped Steve Austin becoming the special ref for Cole's match…Booker T cackled uncontrollably while Cole made excuses for what happened…The announce team hyped the tag team main event, and Cody Rhodes was shown in a face mask heading towards the ring…[C]

Cody Rhodes made his ring entrance in a suit and his face mask. He wouldn’t look at the mirror and seemed embarrassed to be there. He took his coat and tie off for his match as a video recapped his attack on Rey with Dusty…

[Q4] 3. Cody Rhodes defeated JTG at 0:46. Cody attacked immediately at the bell. He hit a headbut and JTG sold it like he had been shot. He followed with Cross Rhodes for the win…The HBK interview on Triple H aired…Michael Cole climbed in the ring to prepare for his interview…[C]

Shore's Slant: Anybody wanna bet if JTG is in the cuts after WrestleMania 27? None of you that dumb huh? Damn.

Cole introduced Cena who came out to a great pop. Cole thanked Cena for joining him on "his show." He setup a video that recapped the Miz beat down. Cole started to ask a question and Cena snatched the mic from his hands. Cena told him to turn around and crawl back to the whole he puked from.

Cena congratulated Miz for getting one over on him. He said he was distracted by something that didn't even exist. He said Miz had it good. He said he was busy spending his time with BS and all Miz had to do was lay low and slink into WrestleMania and maybe he would have had a chance. Cena said but now that the Miz calls himself the face of the WWE, his single goal was to break the face of the WWE.

[Q5] He handed the mic to Cole and said he was done as his music played. Cole asked him if he was underestimating the Miz. He asked if he was scared of the Miz. Cena took his hat off and started to leave. Cole continued to berate him and Cena took his shirt off. He grabbed Cole and Swagger ran out.

Swagger attacked Cena and got the best of him while Cole yelled for Swagger to teach Cena some respect. Swagger went for the ankle lock and Cena kicked him to the floor and stood to face Cole. He scooped up Cole for an AA, but Swagger made the save and took the AA instead. Cena celebrated in the ring as Swagger and Cole looked on from the ramp…A video hyped The Chaperone…[C]

Shore's Slant: Super Cena sucks blah, blah, blah. Here's what I got from that segment: when Lawler hits his finisher at WrestleMania 27, the place is going to explode.

4. Layla (w/Michelle McCool) defeated Kaitlyn at 0:54. Kaitlyn came out to a good pop. She tossed Layla around and then McCool distracted her. Layla hit her finisher for the win. Post-match, McCool hit a knee to Kaitlyn's head…The announce team hyped the return of Rey Mysterio…[C]

Shore's Slant: Dear lord, kill me now. That was awful. Not even a full minute? There were five moves. Swear. Go back and count. And that's calling a shove a move. Ugh.

Back from commercial, Rey Mysterio made his ring entrance as Michael Cole returned to the desk. Drew McIntyre made his greatly shortened entrance…

[Q6] 5. Rey Mysterio defeated Drew McIntyre at 8:08. McIntyre hit a big boot to start. He hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for two and worked the back. Rey escaped and hit a head scissor to setup for 619. McIntyre rolled to the floor and Rey did too. He hit a drop toe hold that dropped Drew on the apron. Drew came right back and drove Rey into the post and then hit a backbreaker on the apron…

Back from commercial, Drew continued to work the back with a modified surfboard. Rey escaped into a pin attempt, but Drew kicked out and strong whipped Rey to the corner for two. Drew placed Rey on the top and climbed up. Rey fought him off and hit a West Coast Pop. He went for the springboard cross body, but Drew ducked and rolled up for two.

Rey moved on a charge in the corner and Drew hit the post. Drew slid over and Rey hit 619, followed by the splash from the top for the win. Post-match, Cody Rhodes came out to the ramp and said he was still waiting for his answer. Rey asked him what was wrong, his daddy wasn't there to conspire against him? Rey said he wears his mask with pride and he'll do it when he beats Cody down at WrestleMania…The announce team hyped Triple H for next…[C]

Shore's Slant: The wrestling is really disappointing tonight. Why even set up the ring if this is all we are going to get. It wasn't a bad match, but we barely got four minutes of action shown to us. I hate WWE TV on the run-up to WrestleMania each year for that reason. Can’t wait till it's over.

[Q7]Hunter made his full ring entrance and let the fans chant for a moment before starting. He said Monday, Undertaker was kind enough to remind everyone what he does in the ring. He said he wanted to show Taker what he can do. A video showed several of his greatest hits with the theme of "Long live the king."

Hunter said he had seen the two greatest matches of his life at the last two WrestleManias in HBK vs. Taker. He said he never understood why Shawn didn't win until Monday. He said Shawn had always had a problem in separating his emotion from the match. He said Shawn let his emotions change him to going out there not to win, but to not lose. He said Shawn was right, he wouldn't have that problem.

Hunter got real serious and said he had the dark side Shawn talked about. He said that might make him a bad person, but it's the truth. He said he will stand in the ring and look across at what might be the greatest legend in the history of this business, and he will do what no one has done before.

He said he will beat Undertaker at WrestleMania 27. He said he will not have any emotion. He is not afraid of things that go bump in the night. He said Undertaker made this match No Holds Barred. He looked at the camera and said, "Thank you." He posed for the crowd to end the promo…

Christian was backstage and Matt Striker asked him about E&C back together. Christian said a lot has happened in 10 years. He ran down several things we have seen and he said what we haven't seen was the two guys who started off this decade right back together. He said tonight, they had a problem to solve. Edge walked up and asked if he was ready. Christian said, "Let's do this." They walked off as the announce team hyped the match…[C]

Shore's Slant: Much better promo from Hunter. He managed to find the right tone and not bury anyone at the same time. If he had done this last week on Raw, all would have been fine for this match. Nicely done.

[Q8] Brodus Clay was in the ring and was introduced by Ricardo Rodriguez before Del Rio drove out in what I think was a Ferrari. Edge and Christian were out separate…

6. Edge and Christian defeated Alberto Del Rio and Brodus Clay at 5:49. Christian and Brodus started. Christian took the early control, but Del Rio distracted Christian and Brodus slammed him to the floor. Edge started to check on him and the ref stopped him. Del Rio slammed Christian against the wall and jumped over the wall when Edge ran over.

Brodus rolled Christian back in the ring and tagged Del Rio. He worked the arm with an arm bar in the center of the ring. He snatched the wrap off Christian's arm and worked a hammer lock in the corner. He set Christian on the top, but Christian fought back and hit the flying elbow.

Both men hot tagged and Edge tried for a cross body. Brodus caught him and hit a powerslam for two. Edge hit a drop toe hold and took out Del Rio. He charged for the spear, but Brodus hit a clothesline instead. Brodus setup for a stink face, but Edge moved. Everybody battled in the ring and Christian tossed Del Rio over the top. He hit the tornado DDT on Brodus and Edge followed with an elbow from the top for the win…

Shore's Slant: Wrong guy jobbed, again. It should have been Christian, again. I know a lot of you disagree, but you're wrong. There is more money in Brodus than there is in Christian right now, and more money in Brodus long term than Edge (only because we are within a couple of years of Edge's retirement). I don't think he should have gone over Edge, but Christian should have done the job to keep the heat on and cover for Edge. I'll have more to say tomorrow on the hitlist. Thanks for reading and make sure you check out my new Smackdown partner Jake Barnett's live coverage as well.
