1/25 Powell's WWE NXT Live Coverage: NXT rookie four-way match, Raw wrestlers bring their never ending feud to Tuesday night, The Fink appears
Jan 25, 2011 - 09:00 PM

By Jason Powell

WWE NXT on WWE.com
Taped earlier tonight in Cincinnati, Oh.

We are still wild and young according to the horrible theme song.. Todd Grisham checked in on commentary and turned things over to Matt Striker, who was in the ring with the four remaining rookies. Striker said there would be two rookie challenges tonight.

Striker said the second challenge will be a fatal four-way match. The winner of said match can swap pros if they choose to. Striker said there had been a violation of the rules in last week's rookie challenge.

Footage aired of Daniel Bryan sitting inside a locker room. Derrick Bateman entered the picture dressed in all black like a prowler. Oh, he's so whacky! Bateman was shown giving Bryan the answers they used in the challenge last week. Back in the ring, Striker announced that Bateman's immunity points were being taken away for that challenge.

Bryan stood up and protested in jest. He said Bateman doesn't wear eye paint like the man in the video. Striker told him to sit down and said he's less popular than Carson Palmer right now. Striker gave Howard Finkel a big introduction.

Striker heaped praise on Finkel and said he's a walking encyclopedia. He said if the rookies can beat Finkel in a trivia contest, they will earn two points. Fink said, "Hello, Cincinnati." Striker asked if he was Mick Foley. Fink got two answers right in the 30 seconds he was given.

The four rookies tried and failed to beat The Fink. Three of them ended up with one correct question. One of the trivia question answers was Jeff Jarrett. Striker said that since none of the rookies beat The Fink, there would be no immunity points.

At ringside, Josh Mathews checked in and said the segment was a train wreck. Grisham said all the rookies are losers. They hyped the main event... [C]

Powell's POV: No, we're the real losers for watching this show. Thanks for indirectly reminding us of that, Todd. Has there ever been a television show of any kind that intentionally made their viewers feel stupid for watching? I just don't get it.

1. Ted DiBiase (w/Maryse, Brodus Clay) defeated Daniel Bryan (w/Derrick Bateman) in a non-title match in 12:30. A video recapped the drama with Gail Kim and The Bellas over Bryan from Monday. Mathews said Grisham is the last person who should mock guys hooking up with girls and said that's as far as he would go with that.

Later, Mathews said he thinks the Divas are into Bryan because he's a winner. The match started slowly with minimal crowd response. There was an impressive spot with Bryan remaining in a bridge with the bulk of Ted's weight on top of him. Ted bowed out to ringside as one of the announcers questioned why Gail wasn't in Bryan's corner. [C]

Powell's POV: I'm not sure what Mathews was referring to with his joke about Grisham. Todd married a former WWE employee, so maybe that's what the joke was referring to.

After the brief break, DiBiase took control of the offense. Ziggler stood up and mocked Bryan. R-Truth had a house mic and came to Bryan's defense. Truth tried to start a chant for Bryan, but Ziggler yelled "sucks" whenever he said his name. Bryan came back with European uppercuts (not to be confused with South American uppercuts), but Ted went right back on the offensive.

Truth went back to revving up the live crowd and this time it worked. He said Daniel, they said Bryan. Moments later, Bryan performed a flip out of the corner to avoid DiBiase in a cool spot. Bryan caught Ted with a kick and then drilled him with a great missile dropkick.

Grisham assumed Bryan was going to win, but Ted kicked out. Ziggler said Bryan is good at winning...almost. Bryan fired away with kicks. He missed one and Ted rolled him up for a near fall. DiBiase went for Dream Street, but Bryan countered. DiBiase came back with a nice spinebuster for a near fall at 11:00.

At 11:30, Bryan went for the LeBell Lock, but Ted reached the ropes before he could lock it in. DiBiase got caught in the ropes and Bryan nailed him with a dropkick. However, Ted caught Bryan with a forearm as he was setting up for a suicide dive. DiBiase hit Dream Street for the upset win. Maryse acted surprised afterward...

Powell's POV: Best match in NXT history. Yes, I enjoyed it more than the Bryan vs. Chris Jericho match on the first show. It didn't feel as meaningful because this was like the 10,000 match in the Bryan vs. DiBiase feud, but it was just a damn good match once they kicked it into second gear. Why can't we get a match like that from these two on Raw?

The Royal Rumble stat video was shown...

Backstage, Ted DiBiase said that after the rookies watched him beat Daniel Bryan, they will want him to become his Pro. Brodus agreed. Ted said he thinks Brodus gives him the best chance to win the tag titles, so he doesn't want that to happen. Brodus called Ted "boss" and said he would win the match for him... [C]

Powell's POV: I really hope Vince McMahon was paying attention to the DiBiase vs. Bryan match. There's no reason Bryan should be bogged down by Divas, nor is there a reason Ted should be wasted on the undercard.

2. Brodus Clay beat Johnny Curtis, Byron Saxton, and Derrick Bateman in a four-way elimination match in 7:20. The winner of the match can swap pros if he chooses to. Brodus dominated Bateman, who was pinned less than a minute into the match. Curtis and Saxton teamed up on Brodus.

Grisham questioned what type of damage Clay could do if he were in the Royal Rumble. "Maybe next year," Grisham concluded. There was a nice spot with Saxton flipping Curtis onto Clay at ringside. [C]

Powell's POV: Cornball Bateman out early. Cool flip move by Curtis onto Clay at ringside? I'm digging this match so far.

After the brief break, Curtis was still writhing in pain on the floor while Clay was roughing up Saxton in the ring. Curtis checked back in an fought off Saxton on the ropes. Curtis performed a double legdrop off the top rope and pinned Saxton at 4:35. Cool spot.

Brodus was mostly punching and kicking until he applied a nerve hold on Curtis's neck at 6:00. Curtis got to his feet, but Clay put him right back down and fired away with a series of chops in the corner. Clay continued to dominate and eventually put Curtis away clean.

After the match, Ted DiBiase and Maryse ran to the ring. Striker entered and asked Brodus whether he was going to switch pros. Brodus said his pro has money, class, power, and will destroy everyone in the Royal Rumble. "One thing my pro is not is Ted DiBiase," Clay said.

Brodus said DiBiase is "the brokest rich dude" he's ever met. He said he can't control his woman, etc. Clay announced that his new pro is Alberto Del Rio. Clay performed his finishing choke move on DiBiase. He walked over and kissed Maryse on the head before leaving the ring. Del Rio walked out and applauded Clay. They celebrated together to end the show...

Powell's POV: The finish of the match was anticlimactic, but it wasn't bad overall. Curtis showed good athleticism, Saxton has heel charisma, and Brodus is a monster. Brodus also did a nice job on the mic afterward. The pro switch puts Del Rio back in play on Tuesday nights. Does this mean Ted and Maryse are finished? Overall, a very good show by NXT standards. I'll be back with the NXT Hitlist on Wednesday. Thanks for watching along with me tonight.
