1/20 Dunn's WWE Superstars Live Coverage: Chris Masters vs Curt Hawkins, Chavo Guerrero vs JTG, Yoshi Tatsu vs Tyson Kidd, and Zack Ryder and Primo vs David Hart Smith and Darren Young
Jan 20, 2011 - 07:00 PM

By Adam Dunn

WWE Superstars on WGN America
Taped in Tulsa, OK and Little Rock, AR

[Q1] The opening video aired, followed by pyro. Jack Korpela and Matt Striker welcomed us to the show. JTG then made his way out to the ring and Chavo followed, in his weird looking attire.

1. JTG defeated Chavo Guerrero at 5:48. Both men locked up to start the match. JTG took advantage and tried playing to the crowd. Chavo followed with a side headlock. Korpela then said JTG and Chavo were some of the “incredible” superstars in the WWE. That statement is impossible. JTG took control with a stiff boot to the face, followed by some taunting. The action spilled to the outside.

At 2:15, Chavo hit a senton for a nearfall. Chavo then followed with an armbar/body scissor submission that JTG fought out of. This match is so slow.

More rest holds from Chavo followed, and the crowd didn't rally behind JTG at all. JTG hit a back body drop and a running forearm for a nearfall. Chavo countered with a great looking northern lights suplex, and then hit some uppercuts and knees in the corner.

At 5:35, JTG hit the mugshot, and then the “Shout Out” for the win...They hyped the Tatsu/Kidd main event. [C]

Dunn's Decision: That sucked. Two people no one in the audience cares about put on a slow plodding match. Limited wrestling with mostly kicks and punches. Very likely the same thing I'm going to get from Masters/Hawkins later. Sigh.

[Q2] Apparently Mattel action figures are fighting on WWE.com, check it out! Masters made his way out to the ring. His intro is kind of eerily reminiscent of Val Venis. Hawkins was out next. Hey, at least his hoodie is cool.

2. Chris Masters defeated Curt Hawkins at 3:20. Striker started expressing his disdain for Hawkins, saying he doesn't respect tradition. Masters started strong, as he does every match on Superstars. He hit a strong spinebuster on Hawkins but missed a flying tackle from the second rope. Hawkins followed with a kick to the head. And a rest hold just over a minute into the match.

Hawkins hit a sliding trip on Masters, driving him face first into the mat. Striker and Korpela started rambling about the 40 man Royal Rumble, then started making picks. Please, anything but these two wrestling again. Hawkins hit a hard clothesline for a nearfall. And followed with another rest hold.

At 3:00 Masters fought out and went for the Masterlock, Hawkins passed out in less than five seconds...The NXT recap aired...The announcers hyped the main event again. [C]

Dunn's Decision: That wasn't even a match, just kicks and punches in between rest holds. Why do they keep letting these two “wrestle” each other?

Back in the arena, Zack Ryder and Primo made their way out. What the hell? I thought Primo was a good guy last week. Scott Stanford and Josh Matthews took over announcing duties. David Hart Smith and Darren Young were out next. Smith's music is awful.

3. Zack Ryder and Primo defeated David Hart Smith and Darren Young at 5:00. Young and Ryder started things out. Young hit an early clotheslines, and Primo tagged in, where he promptly received several arm drags. Smith then tagged in, and Stanford called him a “bulldog.” Oh so clever! Smith hit a spinning bodyslam, and followed with a nasty looking powerbomb on Primo. Who recovered really quickly and hit a distracted Smith with a shot to the knee.

Ryder tagged in, and took control with a neckbreaker for a near fall. Primo entered the match and applied a rear chin lock on Smith.

[Q3] Smith fought out of the hold at 2:50, only to be taken down with an elbow by Primo. Ryder tagged in dropped a few knees on Smith for another near fall. Primo tagged back in and played to the crowd. Smith countered Primo with a belly to belly as Matthews went over the Rumble rules for some reason.

Young made the hot tag and ran through Ryder, hitting a flashy gutbuster. Primo distracted Young, and Ryder hit the Rough Ryder for the win...The main event was hyped. [C]

Dunn's Decision: Wow, how bad does Young look there? He took one move and lost. And no offense to Ryder, but his finisher isn't that effective. But as for the match, Smith looked solid again and I'm sad I didn't get to see a stall suplex. Nothing special here though.

Stanford and Matthews welcomed us back...The Raw recap aired...Yoshi Tatsu made his way to the ring. [C]

[Q4] Tatsu was still in the ring as Kidd made his way out. Wow, he gets more orange every week.

4. Yoshi Tatsu defeated Tyson Kidd at 12:04. Kidd looks like he has a giant eyebrow on his head. Kidd started with some arm work, that Tatsu countered into an arm drag. Kidd countered with his own side head lock. Tatsu fought out and went for a roundhouse kick, but Kidd dove out of the ring.

Tatsu hit a monkey flip and landed some kicks on Kidd. Kidd caught Tatsu in the corner, and hit a leg whip through the ropes on Tatsu, leaving him reeling on the outside. [C]

Back at 7:07 Kidd was working on Tatsu's leg, using a side leg hold. Tatsu fought out with some kicks to the head. Kidd got Tatsu in the corner and hit some kicks on his leg. Stanford began defending Kelly Kelly's honor, saying Kidd shouldn't have berated her at the Slammy's. Anyone remember that?

Kidd continued working on Tatsu's leg with several holds. Tatsu finally fought out of the holds at 10:15. Tatsu hit some chops and then a northern lights suplex for a nearfall. Tatsu missed a spinning wheel kick from the top and Kidd recovered in the corner.

Kidd went for the sharpshooter and Tatsu countered with a small package for the win.

Dunn's Decision: That commercial break took a lot out of the match. After the break, it was mostly rest holds. Simply just too much down time in a match that had a lot of possibilities. And what happened to Tyson Kidd's push? He's worse off than he was before. Terrible show.
