Oct 22, 2010 - 07:00 PM

By Marv Hermanstyne

WWE Friday Night Smackdown on SyFy
Taped in Edmonton, Alberta

[Q1] The opening montage started the show and the announcers welcomed us to SD. The announcers hyped the champion vs. champion match. Teddy Long, the Raw and SD teams were in the ring. Long hyped Bragging Rights match to the audience and he said that he will not make the matches tonight. Miz told Teddy Long that everyone should thank him for the ratings boost because of the Raw team and said that it will be a six man tag match.

Miz said it will be him, Zeke and Sheamus. Show talked about Miz having and hiding behind powerhouses. Show said that Kofi and Rey are on his team for speed purposes and the match was set. Edge said that he had a brainstorm and he wants a one on one match with C.M. Punk. Morrison said that he will challenge Alberto Del Rio. Swagger said that it doesn't leave him with much and he chose Santino. He ripped Santino's cobra for being a worse finisher that the Sharpshooter which got heat…

Long said the six man match will be beginning, right now…

1. Big Show, Rey Mysterio, and Kofi Kingston defeated The Miz, Sheamus, and Ezekiel Jackson in 8:40. Sheamus and Rey started the matchup. Sheamus had the early advantage of the match by using his power to his advantage. Sheamus hit a backbreaker for a nearfall. Kofi tagged in and hit a crossbody to Sheamus for a nearfall. Kofi flipped Sheamus out of the ring and Rey splashed on Sheamus outside of the ring…[C]

The show returned with Zeke and Kofi exchanging blows. Kofi went to the top but Zeke clotheslined him for a nearfall and punched him out in the corner. The Miz tagged in and worked on Kofi's neck. The heels took turns with cheap shots on Kofi. Sheamus hit a nice forearm to Kofi for a nearfall. Kofi hit a neckbreaker to Sheamus and crawled to his corner for a tag but the Miz caught him. Kofi kicked Miz off and tagged Show.

[Q2] Show cleaned house of the heels and superkicked Zeke. Show chokeslammed Miz and Rey got on Show's shoulders and splashed on Miz for the win…

Mind of Marv: Nice opening match to kick off the show. This was nothing spectacular considering that half of the match was going on during the commercial break. This should be a fun match at the PPV especially for those the young guys who are expected to get pushed…

The champion vs. champion match was hyped for later tonight…[C]

Edge vs. Punk was hyped for later since they were traded for each other a few weeks back. A review of John Cena joining Nexus and all the mental torture he has gone thru since becoming an member was shown…

Mind of Marv: Hell in a Cell was the ONLY PPV I did not watch this year, but this storyline does nothing for me. As far as this match is concerned, I don't see Barrett going over because he's not ready to be the WWE Champion. Barrett winning would basically tell me that WWE title is a joke. If you want more thoughts, shoot me an email over the weekend…

Backstage, Josh Mathews interviewed Dolph and Vickie. Footage was shown of Daniel Bryan challenging Dolph on Raw this past week. Dolph said that he was jumped from behind and he it felt like fan jumped him. Dolph cut an generic ass promo about how facing Bryan is like a high school team facing the Super Bowl champions. He said that he will crush Bryan on Sunday…

[Q3] Jack Swagger and that stupid ass eagle made their way to the ring to face Santino, next…[C]

The show returned with Swagger doing pushups in the ring and Santino came to the ring.

2. Jack Swagger beat Santino Marella in 2:50. Santino tried to enforce some comedy, but Swagger hit a weak takedown. Hornswoggle came out to be a distraction to the match. Santino hit an armdrag to Swagger, but Swagger used his power to throw him out. Santino and Hornswoggle did a split and attacked the stupid eagle. Santino hit the Cobra on the Eagle and got back in the ring. Santino hit an armdrag to Swagger. Santino went for the pin for a nearfall.

Santino splashed on Swagger and setup for the Cobra but Swagger got up and applied the Ankle Lock for the win.

Mind of Marv: This comedy really kills the wrestling product. I don't know what the hell is so funny about this shit. Shore gets a kick out of Santino, but he does ZERO for me.

Del Rio vs. Morrison is next…[C]

[Q4] The "Dashing" tip of the week was on dry lips. He used balm them lip gloss…

Mind of Marv: I'm going to plead the 5th and move along with the next match, ugh…

Alberto Del Rio came out with a Benz coupe…

3. Alberto Del Rio defeated John Morrison in 4:30. Both men locked up and Del Rio took advantage early. Morrison leaped on Del Rio with strikes and a running knee for a nearfall. Del Rio applied an sitting crossface to Morrison and Morrison got out it. Del Rio kicked Morrison in the kidneys and hit a flapjack for a nearfall.

Del Rio went back to the crossface to Morrison and Morrison countered with a rollup for nearfall. Del Rio missed a leg splash to Morrison and Morrison hit a nice kick for a nearfall. Del Rio hit a German Suplex for a nearfall. Del Rio missed an inziguri and Morrison went for Starship Pain but Del Rio used his knees to block the move.

Del Rio applied the cross armbreaker submission to Morrison for the win…

Mind of Marv: Good short match between these two. I wished both of them was on the same brand (hint, hint…send Morrison to SD) so they could have a nice long term program. There is some money in both of these guys and hopefully they will bring some fireworks to Sunday's match.

Punk vs. Edge is next…[C]

The WWE Rewind was the Battle Royal from Raw this past week and Edge came out to a nice pop.

Mind of Marv: Can Tony Chimel stop saying the "Rated R Pooperstar"? Its Superstar…I know he is trying to be enthusiastic about introducing Edge but damn that's annoying…

[Q5] 4. Edge fought C.M. Punk to a no-contest in 13:15. Punk got technical with the takedown to Edge and Edge switched to headlock. Edge hit a shoulderblock for a nearfall. Edge went back to the neck of Punk and Punk countered by ramming Edge in the corner and Irish Whipped Edge in the corner. Punk applied an armbar submission but Edge countered with a jawbreaker. Edge hit a big boot to Punk and went for a crossbody but missed. Punk went for the cover for a nearfall.

Punk worked on Edge's arm and went for a cover for a nearfall. Edge hit a swinging neckbreaker on Punk. Punk dropped Edge on the ropes and Edge fell outside of the ring…[C]

The show returned with Punk applying a body scissors to Edge and Edge countered elbows to get out of the submission. Punk hit a gutbuster to Edge for a nearfall. Punk went to the top rope but Edge countered with am powerslam to Punk. The ref started the ten count and both got up at the eight count. Both men exchanged blows to the lame ass "boo" and "yay" chant from the crowd…

[Q6] Edge hit instant offense to Punk for a nearfall. Punk went for the GTS but Edge countered to the Equalizer for the nearfall. Punk slammed Edge for a nearfall and hit the high knee to Edge. Punk went for the bulldog but Edge hit the Impaler DDT for the nearfall. Edge went to the top of the rope but Punk kicked him off. Punk hit a chop and went for a superplex but Edge knocked him off. Edge went for the spear but all of the members of the elimination match came in and it was rapid fire finishers.

Edge stood tall by spearing Punk and Team SD reunited at the end…

Mind of Marv: Man why couldn't they do a Donovan McNabb type trade and keep Punk on SD but give Raw some crappy ass wrestler like JTG? Edge and Punk has Wrestlemania written all over it feud wise and I really enjoyed this match. This was a fun ass match which I will give rave reviews in the hit list tomorrow.

Kane and Orton is later tonight…[C]

The show returned as McCool dressed as Bret Hart and Layla was dressed as Natayla with her father's beard and they ripped into the Anvil and Bret. Natalya and Kelly Kelly came out to interrupt this snore fest and Natalya vs. Layla is set for Bragging Rights for the Divas title.

5. Natalya and Kelly Kelly defeated Co-Divas Champions Lay Cool in 2:20. Layla and Natalya started the match. Layla hit a dropkick to Natalya and tagged in McCool. Both heels worked on Natalya and Natalya hit a double under hook suplex to Layla for a nearfall.

Natalya applied the Sharpshooter to Layla for the win...

Mind of Marv: Of course this was an throwaway two match which I am predicting an title change on Sunday because Lay Cool is just downright annoying…and they really need to revamp this women's division.

They did a Tale of the Tape between both champions and the match was hyped again…[C]

[Q7] The Stand Up for the WWE campaign was shown with celebrities and superstars putting over the WWE…

Mind of Marv: I hate politics even though I live outside of DC, so read Jason Powell's view on this matter because I basically agree with him 100%…

Kane came out with Paul Bearer and Kane will face Orton, next…[C]

[Q8] 6. WWE Champion Randy Orton defeated World Heavyweight Champion Kane (w/ Paul Bearer) in a Champion vs. Champion match in 12:00. Both men stared at each other until Kane hit an uppercut and got on the quick attack. Kane hit a side slam and the neck slash and went for the Tombstone but Orton countered with a neck breaker and setup for the RKO but Kane crawled out. Orton worked on Kane outside of the ring.

Kane clotheslined Orton outside of the ring and Paul Bearer laughed. Kane used his power and rammed Orton into the security railing and ring. [C]

The show returned with Kane applying a bear hug and hitting a clothesline for a nearfall. Kane attacked Orton in the corner with knees and an uppercut. Kane hit an Irish Whip to Orton and kicked him some more. Kane threw Orton into the ring post and back in the ring. Kane hit the big boot to Orton for a nearfall. Orton got back on the advantage for a second, but Kane hit a side neckbreaker for a nearfall.

Kane hit a clothesline off the top rope for a nearfall. Kane went for the chokeslam but Orton hit elbows and a big boot to Kane. Orton hit clotheslines and a powerslam to Kane. Orton hit the DDT off the ropes and he setup for the RKO but Kane countered with a big boot. Kane went for a chokeslam but the lights went out, bells tolled teasing Taker's entrance but the lights came back on and Orton hit the RKO for the win.

Post match, Kane went on a rampage and started to tear shit up. The bells tolled again and the arena got dark blue. The lights came back on and Taker came from the inside of the ring and dragged Kane inside of the ring to kick his ass. WWE enhanced the sound effects and the show went off the air….

Mind of Marv: I'm going to keep it real, this main event sucked. I like that Kane looked dominant in this match, but they made Orton look so damn weak. This match got ZERO buildup and you made the top champion (which is Orton) look weak? Sigh. I understand that Kane is the focus with this recycled feud with Taker, but don't make Orton look weak on a rear appearance on SD. But overall, this was a good go-home show which did a much better job than what Raw brought to the table this week. I will have more thoughts with the Smackdown Hitlist on Saturday.

Rich Twilling will have live coverage of the Bragging Rights PPV on Sunday and an audio review of the show. I am thinking about chiming in with my thoughts of the show as I will be in the forum discussing the show. I will also have the honor of proving the Smackdown Hitlist tomorrow and any feedback should be forwarded to dotnetmarv@gmail.com and I'll see you next week.
