By Marv Hermanstyne

WWE Friday Night Smackdown on SyFy
Taped in Topeka, KS

[Q1] Video recapping the Rey/Del Rio feud was shown and the opening montage was shown. The announcers hyped Kane's message for the Undertaker later tonight. Cole joined the Smackdown team for commentary. Teddy Long came out and introduced Edge as Smackdown new acquisition and got a HUGE pop. Edge brought back the old school shades which was cool. Swagger came out with his goofy mascot to a lot of heat…

Swagger congratulated Edge for coming back and went on a rant about him getting embarrassed last week. Swagger put over the stupid mascot and talked about getting medical insurance. Edge said he will make Swagger look stupid in three minutes and told the mascot to leave because he has no problem flipping the bird. Vintage Edge!

1. Edge defeated Jack Swagger in 10:15. The match started slow with Swagger trying to apply the ankle lock early. Swagger hit a belly-to-back suplex and did pushups on Edge's back. One of the soldiers in the audience had a Rated R belt which was cool. The mascot was being stupid on the ropes and Edge speared the mascot into the security railing. Swagger whined to the referee about the mascot getting hurt. [C]

The show returned with Edge hitting a spinning heel kick to Swagger. Cole bitched about Edge should get arrested for harming a endangered species…lame. Swagger took control of the match by working on Edge's arm and they showed a replay of the Eagle getting stretched out, REALLY? Back to the match at hand, Swagger applied more pressure to Edge's arm. Edge came back on offense with a crossbody on Swagger's back when he was on the ropes.

[Q2] Swagger hit a nice back breaker to Edge and Edge countered with a tornado DDT for a nearfall. Swagger hit a belly to belly suplex to Edge for a nearfall. Edge slid out the ring and hit a hangman to Swagger. Edge setup for the spear but Swagger moved tried the ankle lock. There were rapid fire finishers until Edge went for a roll up for a nearfall. Swagger went for the ankle lock again, but Edge went for a jackknife rollup for a nearfall.
Edge hit the spear on Swagger for the win…

Mind of Marv: Good opening match between these two. This should be an interesting feud for weeks to come and hopefully it can elevate Swagger by working with an experienced guy like Edge. Edge is getting a nice pop from the crowd or was it because the crowd was hot. I'm not buying the babyface turn yet…

Edge said afterwards that he knows it’s a PG show but he did flip the bird. Rey and Del Rio is the main event and the feud was recapped. [C]

The Dashing tip from Cody Rhodes was on teeth and LayCool came out to annoy us...

Mind of Marv: These Dashing tips are so DAMN lame…and we get LayCool afterwards? Talk about a double whammy of a segment…

2. Unified Divas Champion Layla (w/Michelle McCool) defeated Kelly Kelly (w/Natalya) in a non-title match in 2:15. Layla hit a takedown and both women exchanged slaps. Layla kicked Kelly out of the ring and McCool got involved with a kick of her own. Kelly hit a sloppy drop toe hold to Layla and hit some instant offense. Kelly missed her moved and got smacked with a Lay Out by Layla for the quick win…

Mind of Marv: I'm not even going to get into detail about a throwaway Divas match because I don't want to sound redundant…

Post match, Layla and Natalya scrabbled in the ring and McCool saved the day. Dolph vs. MVP is later tonight. [C] [Q3]

The show returned with the Big Show sprinting to the ring and he came out to hype his movie, Knuckleheads. He said that he is the team captain of team Smackdown and he has to get a team together. He gave pep talk about Team SD and said that Hornswoggle was the mascot. Hornswoggle came out in Viking Purple and Gold…

Mind of Marv: Breaking News: Jason Powell just broke his TV…that is all.

Big Show said that Smurfette didn't grow a beard, it's just Hornswoggle. The Dudebusters suddenly came out with SD shirts. The DBs said that they were the guys for team SD and they want in. Show kept pestering them and said that he needs time to get a team. The DBs said that they can get traded to Raw and they popped out with Raw shirts. Show asked Horny what to do and he hit a double chokeslam to the DBs. Horny and Big Show horsed around in the ring afterwards…

Mind of Marv: Well the campiness comes to Friday nights, ugh. Was Hornswoggle wearing Vikings paint because Bragging Rights is the same night as the Vikings/Packers game and they were taking a shot at the Vikings fans? If it was, nice approach by WWE otherwise…they just gave people more reasons to watch the football game.

Del Rio and Rey was hyped again...[C]

[Q4] 3. WWE Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre defeated Kaval and Kofi Kingston in a non-title match in 3:07. The heels worked early on Kofi and Drew punched Kofi out in the corner. Kofi came back with strikes but he missed a splash in the corner. Drew applied an armbar to Kofi and Kofi countered with armdrag. The heels took advantage with rapid fire tags and Kofi came back with some strikes. Cody went for the Alabama Slam but Kofi pushed him and Kaval tagged in and hit quick, rapid offense on both heels.

Kaval applied the Dragon Sleeper on Cody but Drew hit a big boot. Cody dropped Kaval on the ropes and hit the Cross Rhodes for the quick win…

Mind of Marv: That was it? OMG, Kaval is being wasted since joining the main roster. Kofi is a hot babyface and they have him involved in a bullshit tag match? What are they doing?

Kane's message to his brother is still to come…[C]

The show returned with Paul Bearer cutting a promo and he introduced Kane. Kane said years ago, he didn’t know that his plan would be so easy. He said that Taker sent Paul bearer to the dark side, but he brought him back because he is more powerful. He said that everyone in the WWE Universe was fooled by Bearer supporting Taker and he ripped into the crowd by saying their dreams crashed down. He said that Taker is just like everyone…weak, pathetic, and helpless to his superiors.

[Q5] People chanted Taker and said everyone answers to someone and now the dead man answers to the Devil's favorite demon. He said that he destroyed Taker and everyone has nothing but their pathetic lives. He said that he was betrayed by everyone that is close to him and he failed to all his creatures of the night. Kane said that they are just warming up….

Mind of Marv: More money promos from Kane which continue to entertain me and with the show being on SyFy, all the creepy music correlates well…

Del Rio and Rey is the main event and MVP vs. Dolph is next…[C]

Footage of Vickie losing to her rookie and Vickie being pissed at Dolph for hugging Katelyn…

4. Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero) defeated MVP to retain in 12:10. Both men locked up and MVP hit a drop toe hold and showed his technical skills for a nearfall. MVP hit a belly to back suplex for a nearfall. Dolph got on offense by hitting some jumping elbows for a nearfall. Vickie continued to look pissed outside of the ring and Dolph was looking like a geek begging for forgiveness.
Vickie left Dolph and MVP hit a baseball slide to Dolph to the commercial break. [C]

[Q6] The show returned with Dolph applying a body scissors to MVP. Dolph hit a nice neckbreaker to MVP for a nearfall. Dolph hit a fireman's throw for a nearfall. Dolph applied a crossface to MVP and MVP powered out with punches. Dolph applied the sleeper but MVP went for a quick rollup for a nearfall. Dolph hit a Rocker Dropper to MVP for the 2.75 count…

Dolph hit another jumping elbow for a nearfall. Dolph tried to choke out MVP but both men exchanged punches. MVP hit a nice overhead throw to Dolph and hit some instant offense to setup the Ballin' Elbow. MVP hit an Exploder to Dolph for a very good nearfall. Dolph hit a jawbreaker to MVP (which he oversold) and MVP hit a big boot after missing the first time for a nearfall. MVP went for suplex, but Dolph applied the sleeper and MVP countered out.

Katelyn came out to support Dolph and MVP went for the Ballin' Elbow, but Katelyn grabbed MVP's leg and Dolph hit a funny looking Zig Zag to win the match.

Mind of Marv: Average match at best because of the commercial breaks and the chemistry between these two are horrible. Dolph is not over as a champion and if they continue with this program, Dolph will have Katelyn when she is eliminated from NXT and MVP get the IC title and a MUCH needed HEEL TURN.

Post match, Vickie came out pissed the hell off. Dolph pathetically said I love you…and Tribute to the Troops video was shown. Del Rio and Rey will face each other in the main event, next…[C]

[Q7] The Raw rebound was shown and Josh Mathews interviewed Del Rio. Del Rio compared Rey to the Chihuahua and ripped him about not being a man and then the promo becomes Spanish. He said that only thing to know, that he will wipe Rey off the bottom of his shoe. [C]

Mind of Marv: Let's get match started already…it's been promo overkill all show.

Del Rio came out with the charcoal colored Rolls Royce and got a ton of heat.

Mind of Marv: I like the new SD graphics with their name image correlating with their logos. Yea, I notice simple, nerdy shit like that…

Rey got a MEGA pop from the hot crowd…

[Q8] 5. Rey Mysterio defeated Alberto Del Rio in 13:25. Del Rio worked on Rey in the corner early but Rey came back with quick shots to the midsection. Del Rio missed a dive on Rey and Rey missed a senton but countered with a drop toe hold to Del Rio on the ring steps. Rey lead to kicking the shit out of Del Rio and working on the injured arm of Del Rio. Rey hit a crossbody from the top rope on Del Rio. [C]

The show returned with Rey dominating and went for the 619, but Del Rio moved and caught a dropkick from Rey. Rey kicked Del Rio's head on the announce table and kicked him in the kidneys. Rey hit a baseball slide to Del Rio in the corner for a nearfall. Rey went to the top rope but Del Rio hit a sick leaping inziguri to Rey.

Del Rio put Rey back in the ring and covered for a nearfall. Del Rio worked on Rey's arm and hit another inziguri in Rey's midsection for a nearfall. Del Rio hit an Irish Whip to Rey for a nearfall. Both men exchanged blows and Rey got the advantage by kicking Del Rio off. Del Rio went for a superplex, but Rey blocked him and hit a sunset flip power bomb for a nearfall. Rey kicked the crap out of Del Rio's head for a nearfall.

Rey hit a springboard to Del Rio but Del Rio countered into a power slam for a nearfall. Del Rio hit a fallaway slam to Rey for a nearfall. Del Rio missed the inziguri and Rey hit a hurracrana and beat on Del Rio on the ropes. Rodriguez was trying to interfere, but Rey threw Del Rio into Rodriguez. Rey hit the 619 and splashed Del Rio for the win.

Mind of Marv: Hot main event to close this show. This should be a interesting feud going forward and I will be looking for more matches to come between these two. Overall, the body of the show was very weak and the only notable things about this show was the beginning and the end. To make this show effective every week on cable TV, we need to see more matches like this. The Diva filler and Hornswoggle is what brings the show down.

Rich Twilling will provide the Smackdown Hitlist in the morning and any feedback should be forwarded to dotnetmarv@gmail.com and I'll see you next week. You can also email me for any last minute fantasy football advice as I am doing very well in money leagues and have some secret strategies to help you get a win.
