8/30 Twilling's WWE Raw Live Coverage: Landmark 900th episode of Raw celebration; Sheamus, John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge, and Chris Jericho vs. The Nexus in an elimination match
Aug 30, 2010 - 10:00 PM |
By Rich Twilling
WWE Raw on the USA Network
Live from Boston, Mass.
[Q1] The "Generations in the Making" video showing past Raw highlights was shown. They touted the 900th episode of the show. The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Michael Cole welcomed us to the "900th consecutive week of Raw." Jerry Lawler also checked in on commentary...
Bret Hart's music hit and he came out to the ring. Bret said he even wondered if Raw would catch on when it debuted, but thinks it is doing pretty damn good. Bret said he was there for the first show, and only The Undertaker was there then and here tonight.
Kane's music hit and he headed out to the ring. Kane said there is no Undertaker anymore because he left him to rot. He said Taker was no longer a phenom. He said the last time he was truly The Undertaker is when he retired Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 26.
Bret said he will look forward to Taker beating Kane like he always does. Kane said since Taker took out Shawn, he too needed to take out an icon. He went after Bret but the Hart Dynasty came out. Kane disposed of them and got his hands on Bret. Undertaker appeared in the ring.
Kane left the ring. The GM chimed in and made a main event worthy of the 900th episode of Raw, pitting The Undertaker vs. Bret Hart. Taker and Bret had stoic looks on their faces in the ring...
Twill's Two Cents: Nice mic work by Kane. I know Taker vs. Bret won't be what it once was, but that is a pretty big main event.
Footage from the first ever episode of Monday Night Raw was shown. I even heard Randy Savage's voice in there... [C]
[Q2] Episode 279 of Raw was highlighted by Steve driving the zamboni into the ring, beating on Vince McMahon, and being taken to jail...
1. The Miz and Alex Riley defeated Kofi Kingston and Michael McGillicutty, and Kaval and Daniel Bryan in a triple threat tag team match in 3:16. There were three men in the ring at once with their partners on the apron.
Kaval hit the Warrior's Way on McGillicutty, but Miz came in and hit the Skull Crushing Finale on Kaval for the win. After the match, Miz knocked out Bryan with the MITB briefcase...
Twill's Two Cents: Fun match with the three teams and I'm sure a Kaval and Bryan tag team would interest a lot of people. I like that they had the match and also continued the program with Miz and Bryan.
Bret Hart vs. The Undertaker was hyped for later in the show, as was Team WWE vs. The Nexus... [C]
Footage aired of Melina defeating Jillian Hall last week with LayCool saying they would be on the show tonight...
[Q3] LayCool were already in the ring awaiting their opponents, Melina and Eve Torres...
2. Melina and Eve Torres defeated Michelle McCool and Layla in :51. Melina scored the very quick pinfall...
Afterward, LayCool challenged Melina to a match at Night of Champions to unify the WWE Woman's and Divas Championships. Melina accepted, as long as it was a lumberjack match. The whole roster came out and stood by Melina on the stage...
Twill's Two Cents: They made it clear it would be one of the two LayCool members facing Melina. I'm glad they are finally unifying the belts as the Divas Championship is useless.
Episode 889 was highlighted by The Nexus going on their first physical dismantling of John Cena and the entire Monday Night Raw television show...
Backstage, The Nexus worried amongst themselves that they were getting weak. Wade Barrett said he would become WWE Champion in three weeks and they were facing five of the top stars in history tonight. He said he wanted to do something nobody would ever forget tonight... [C]
Episode 850 featured Bob Barker as the guess host and the absolute hilarity of the big "Chris" The Price is Right name tag on Chris Jericho's bare chest...
Josh Mathews interviewed Chris Jericho backstage. Jericho said he was the best in the world at what he does and he's the only one that still believes that. He said if he does not win the belt at Night of Champions, he will be done. He said to wait and see what he does tonight...
Twill's Two Cents: Nice, and worrisome teaser for the pay-per-view. I hope that doesn't mean what I think it might mean. Short, but very good promo by Jericho.
John Morrison and R-Truth made their entrance for a tag match to crown new number one contenders... [C]
[Q4] Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre made their entrance...
3. R-Truth and John Morrison vs. Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre to become number one contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championship ended in a no contest in :47. The referee could never get control of the match and called for the bell. They brawled a bit after the "match."...
Bret Hart and The Undertaker was hyped... [C]
Did you know? If Jersey Shore continues at its current pace, it will reach 900 episodes in 2083...
Twill's Two Cents: If that happens, the world will be a barren wasteland because everyone would have died of stupidity.
Episode 867 featured Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels burying the hatchet...
Bret Hart vs. The Undertaker made their entrances...
Twill's Two Cents: You know who doesn't belong in this segment? Wade Barrett.
[Q5] Wade Barrett's music hit and he came out to the ring. He said this match was not going to take place. He tried to take out Taker, but was promptly disposed of. The lights went off and Taker's music gonged. Bret was gone and Kane was in the ring.
Taker and Kane went at it and when Taker had Kane ready for a chokeslam, the gong sounded and lights went out again. When the came back on, Kane was gone and The Nexus came out to the ring.
Taker started beating the crap out of them when the light show continued. When they came back on, Barrett hit his finisher on Taker. Justin Gabriel then hit the 450 splash. Taker writhed in pain as Kane looked on from the ramp.
Taker tried to sit up, but he fell back down to the mat. Kane laughed maniacally. Either that, or he thought something was really funny...
Twill's Two Cents: Everyone should know by now that Bret Hart is not able to wrestle, so that should not have disappointed anybody. If so, climb out from under your rock. Nice job getting heat back for The Nexus. They have yet to engage with Taker yet, so they took down the big dog. Let's hope they don't blow this momentum by the end of the show.
Jack Swagger (remember him? Seriously.) made his way to the ring. He cut a promo. He was an all-American American when he left Raw and he returns a former World Champion...
4. Jack Swagger defeated Evan Bourne in 2:18. With the match underway, Alberto Del Rio's music hit and he drove his Bentley into the arena. A split screen had Alberto's entrance and the match. Swagger made Bourne tap out to the ankle lock.
[Q6] Del Rio took the mic and said Rey Mysterio would not be on the show tonight. Del Rio said he was going to do to Bourne what he did to Mysterio. He locked in his arm breaker. He went for the chair, but Mark Henry came down and made the save...
Twill's Two Cents: I don't see the love for this guy. That was an odd segment for an anniversary Raw show. I don't think I've ever been so glad to see Mark Henry appear. By the way, Del Rio looks like a smaller version of Brad Garrett from Everybody Loves Raymond.
Highlights of WWE in China were shown. Cool video package and footage...
Tonight's ten man elimination main event was hyped... [C]
Episode 331 featured the highest rated segment in Raw history (I believe), the "This is your life" segment presented by Mick Foley to The Rock. I still laugh at the "You cut The Rock off at second base" he said to his "high school sweetheart." ...
C.M. Punk and Straight Edge Society came to the ring. Punk said he was better than The Rock and although 900 episodes was impressive, every episode was void of family values. He then had four examples. He then had two words for us. "Katie Vick." He said to YouTube it.
Episode #824 when Triple H destroyed Randy Orton inside of his own house. Episode #691 when John Cena threw Edge into the Long Island Sound. Punk said he would never throw another competitor into any body of water.
Episode #257 with DX declaring war on WCW. Episode #304 and episode #754 featured Stone Cold Steve Austin bringing a beer truck into the arena and sprayed the crap out of people with beer.
[Q7] Punk set up Steve Austin coming to the ring to spray him with beer. Austin's music hit and he did not come out. The SES acted scared and then Punk laughed at everyone for falling for it. He then said he had a great clip from Smackdown.
Episode #199 of Smackdown was the one where Brock Lesnar superplexed Big Show and the ring broke. Punk said, "Big Show is criminally obese, and I don't know who the other guy was." Funny. Big Show's music hit and he came out to the ring in a damn large suit. That is a lot of fabric.
Show said he has had a lot of embarrassing moments in his career, so fat jokes were old. He then did a Hulk Hogan impression. Then the fight finally broke loose and it was Show getting the best of Luke Gallows while Punk and Mercury got out of there...
Twill's Two Cents: Nice to see Punk on Raw and although that was a long promo, it was pretty entertaining. I wish they could find a role for Show that allows him to use his personality without having him wrestle full time.
The main event was hyped one last time... [C]
Did you know? WWE Raw has aired 256 more episodes than Monday Night Football...
Twill's Two Cents: Did you also know the NFL has an off season? WWE is certainly spraining their wrist patting themselves on the back and pleasing themselves in other ways tonight.
Episode #450 was when Triple H returned to Raw at MSG in 2002. Always one of the coolest, and loudest, returns in WWE history...
[Q8] Mathews interviewed Sheamus on the stage. Sheamus said Triple H would not be on the show tonight and would never come back. He then called himself the only real Irish person in the city of Boston.
Sheamus talked Night of Champions and called himself the most poorly treated champion in the history of Raw. Edge's music hit and he came out to the stage. Edge said since he debuted on Raw, crazy people have tried to break up his weddings and "crazed ex-employees came through the crowd" to attack him.
Edge said he has given back three times more than he has taken. He has won 29 championships, the Royal Rumble, the King of the Ring, and the first Money in the Bank Ladder match. He then proceeded to the ring... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: Damn, that's quite the accomplishment list for Edge.
5. The Nexus (Wade Barrett, David Otunga, Heath Slater, Michael Tarver, and Justin Gabriel) defeated John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge, Sheamus, and Chris Jericho in an elimination match in 11:16. After everyone made their entrances, the show went to commercial. Top of the hour is coming. Long overrun tonight... [C]
[Overrun] Jericho and Tarver started the match. Jericho walked away and got himself intentionally counted out.
Chris Jericho was eliminated via countout.
Edge entered the ring and pushed the referee down.
Edge was eliminated via disqualification.
Cena and Sheamus made a legit tag and worked over Tarver. Sheamus then beat Heath Slater's ass. David Otunga came in and grabbed the advantage for his team. The Nexus traded many tags. Slater then hit his finisher and pinned Sheamus.
Sheamus was eliminated via pinfall by Heath Slater.
Twill's Two Cents: That was anticlimactic. The WWE Champion just received a lengthy beatdown and was pinned by Heath Freaking Slater.
Cena came in and hit the Attitude Adjustment on Slater.
Slater was eliminated via pinfall by Cena.
Cena became the next target for Nexus. Cole and King suggested that The Nexus have done more as a group than any in the history of WWE Raw...
Twill's Two Cents: That is just ridiculous.
Rapid fire eliminations. No time to bold them. Cena eliminated Otunga via submission. Gabriel hit the 450 to pin Cena. Orton hit RKOs and pinned both Gabriel and Tarver. Barrett hit his finisher on Orton for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Nice night for Gabriel. He hit the 450 splash on Undertaker and then did so on Cena before pinning him. Very glad to see Barrett win this match as he has the title match in a few weeks, and Nexus not winning this match would have taken away what they did to Undertaker earlier in the night.
A show honoring the past that really pointed at the future. I'll have more to say in my Member's Exclusive Audio show. Thank you for following along with me tonight.
