8/23 Powell's WWE Raw Live Coverage: Randy Orton vs. John Morrison vs. Ted DiBiase in a Triple Threat match, John Cena vs. The Miz, R-Truth vs. Edge, Night of Champions pay-per-view main event
Aug 23, 2010 - 10:00 PM

By Jason Powell

WWE Raw on the USA Network
Taped in Los Angeles, Calif.

[Q1] The show opened with a recap of last week's Raw, which focussed on Nexus vs. Team WWE... The opening montage aired... Justin Roberts introduced Sheamus. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler checked in on commentary as the WWE Champion headed to the ring. The announcers recapped footage of Randy Orton taking out Sheamus with an RKO last week.

Sheamus went to ringside and mocked the fans. He approached a young girl and referred to her as "fella" before calling her a disgrace. Shame on him for picking on kids. He mocked another kid who was too infatuated with his own hair to care. Oops, now he has me mocking the kids.

Sheamus turned his attention to Orton and the fans chanting RKO, which led to an RKO chant. Sheamus said he and the general manager haven't been on the page lately. He urged the GM not to give into Orton. "He should be punished, he should be locked up, he should be put in prison," Sheamus said. He added that Orton should never get another shot at the WWE Championship.

The email chime sounded and Michael Cole stood at the usual podium to read the GM's email. The general manager doesn't have a problem with Sheamus. In fact, he feels he should be rewarded. Cole called for stagehands to bring out a throne. Two crew members placed a throne on the stage.

The GM said Sheamus will determine his own challenger by sitting in the throne and watching all the matches during Raw. He said Sheamus will pick his own opponent for the Night of Champions pay-per-view. "Finally some justice for me," Sheamus said. Cole said the matches were about to begin.

Edge's music hit. Edge came out and he and Sheamus cautiously walked by one another. Edge headed to the ring, while Sheamus went to the stage to take his set on the throne... [C]

Powell's POV: Decent opening segment albeit with nothing particularly memroable. Sheamus picking on the kids was funny. I like the hook that Sheamus will pick his own opponent later in the show, but it also sends the message that viewers can just check back later for the big announcement.

[Q2] An ad aired for next week's 900th episode of Raw. I'd like to personally thank my fantasy football league for once again scheduling the draft on a Monday night. You know, because no one is busy on a Monday night...

1. Edge pinned R-Truth in 4:20. R-Truth received his full entrance after the break. Truth took control, but lost it when he missed an early dive toward Edge on the floor. In the end, Edge missed a spear, but then avoided Truth's finishing kick. Edge speared Truth the second time around for the win.

Edge looked up at Sheamus afterward. He took a mic and said Sheamus could sit on his throne and brag about all the people he's defeated, but he hasn't defeated anyone until he beats the Rated R Superstar...

The announcers hyped John Cena vs. The Miz for later in the show. A teaser aired for Cody Rhodes's appearance on Syfy's Warehouse 13... [C]

Powell's POV: Wow, Warehouse 13 got a bigger plug from WWE than the company gives it's own show that airs on the same network. Edge tried to get some heat with a comment about how he won the match for Team WWE at SummerSlam, but he received no response. Either the fans weren't paying attention, we're playing along, or were burned out because this was the second edition of Raw they sat through last Monday night.

Still shot photos aired from WWE's show in Shanghi, China. Apparently, the Commie bastard government wouldn't let them air video footage. Okay, they actually promised more next week...

[Q3] 2. Chris Jericho defeated The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) via submission in 3:55. Jericho punched Khali to start the match. Khali no-sold it. Jericho tried again, but Khali caught his fist and then went to work with his usual offense. Khali locked in the Vice Grip at 2:30, but Jericho was able to reach the ropes and roll out of the ring.

Jericho came back with a Codebreaker attempt, but Khali caught him and regained control of the offense. Khali went for a kick in the corner, but Jericho avoided it. Jericho took a shot at Khali's injured knee and then applied the Walls of Jericho. Khali eventually tapped out.

After the match, Jericho addressed Sheamus. He said Edge isn't the best in the world at what he does. "I am," Jericho said. Jericho continued to make his case for getting the title match while standing on the second rope. When he turned around, Khali chopped him...

Powell's POV: Giants don't tap out in televised matches. Nevertheless, a nice win for Jericho, who worked hard to carry Khali to an entertaining match. Does this mean Edge and Jericho aren't on the same page anymore?

Highlights aired from last week of The Miz and Alex Riley taking out Daniel Bryan...

Backstage, John Cena called Miz's attack on Bryan "petty and classless." He said Miz's mouth has been bigger and his attitude has been worse since he won the Money in the Bank briefcase. Cena vowed to shut Miz's mouth with an Attitude Adjustment... [C]

Powell's POV: It looked like Cena was going through the motions with that brief promo. The crowd has been flat since the show started, so it looks like back-to-back episodes of Raw took it's toll on this crowd.

After the break, Jillian Hall sang a song until she was interrupted by Melina's entrance music. Melina got her usual paparazzi entrance. Am I the only one who wonders why we never see these photos of Melina show up anywhere?...

3. Melina defeated Jillian Hall in a non-title match in 2:35. They traded offense during the opening minute of the match.

[Q4] The announcers spoke about the 900th episode of Raw, screaming female tennis players, and women's golf. Yes, really. Jillian missed a top rope legdrop. Melina hit her sunset flip into a powerbomb finisher for the win. Afterward, LayCool appeared on the big screen. The wannabe Beautiful People said they will be at the 900th episode of Raw and have an offer that Melina can't refuse. No one cared...

Backstage, Josh Matthews entered Miz's locker room and asked him about John Cena's previous comments. Miz complained about Cena picking Daniel Bryan over him at the pay-per-view. Miz said Cena could have at least talked to him about the decision he made backstage, but instead he embarrassed him in front of the world.

Miz said he's going to beat Cena and show him that their are consequences for his actions. Miz said he doesn't expect Sheamus to pick him as his opponent at the pay-per-view. However, he said it doesn't really matter since he has the Money in the Bank briefcase. Miz teased that he might even cash in tonight... [C]

Powell's POV: Quality promo from Miz, which is no surprise. Just image how off the charts great his gloating could have been if Nexus had been (properly) booked to go over on Team WWE at SummerSlam.

The Nexus walked onto the stage. Sheamus, who was still seated on the throne, attempted to buddy up to them. The email chime sounded. Cole announced that the general manager was impressed by Nexus last week. Thus, their ban on challenging for title belts has been lifted. Wade Barrett walked over to Sheamus, who stood up. "Consider our truce over," Barrett said... [C]

Powell's POV: Short, sweet, and effective. Sheamus sold it nicely by showing concern as he sat back down on the throne after Nexus headed backstage. I love the way Sheamus has to worry about his usual challengers, The Miz and the MITB threat, and now Nexus.

Highlights aired of The Miz and Alex Riley working over Daniel Bryan last week...

[Q5] 4. The Miz defeated John Cena by DQ in 13:00. Cole was pro-Miz as usual. The Miz jumped out to an early advantage on Cena. Cole noted that Cena had passed one million friends on Facebook. Cena started to make his comeback at 3:30, but Miz caught him on the top rope and swept his legs out from under him. The show cut to break with Cena lying on the floor. [C]

After the break, Miz continued to dominate the action. He avoided a bulldog attempt and then followed up with a kick to the face. Cena kept coming back, but Miz kept countering. Cena applied the STF, but Miz reached the ropes at 11:55. Miz came back with another kick to the face.

[Q6] Miz ended up at ringside. Daniel Bryan ran out and attacked Miz from behind for the DQ. Bryan rolled Miz back inside the ring, where Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment. Cena left the ring and Bryan entered to apply his submission hold. Miz tapped out immediately. Several referees stepped in. Cole questioned where Bryan gets off interfering in "main event match here on Raw"...

The announcers hyped Randy Orton vs. John Morrison vs. Ted DiBiase in a Triple Threat match for later in the show...

An ad for WWE Smackdown hyped Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston for the Intercontinental Title, and Rey Mysterio vs. Kane, and the TV return of The Undertaker...

Lowlights aired from last week of Tamina slapping Santino Marella on the ass...

5. Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov defeated The Uso Brothers (w/Tamina) in 3:05. Cole said Santino is like Will Ferrell's character in "The Other Guys" in that women seem to like him for some inexplicable reason. Cole also reminded viewers that the tag titles have new names.

Santino handled the comedy, Kozlov beat the hell out of his opponents. In the end, Kozlov caught Jay Uso's kick and hit his finisher for the clean pin. Afterward, Tamina talked her men out of attacking Santino, and then blew him a kiss...

Powell's POV: One team is all about comedy, the other had been legit tag title contenders, so guess which one went over? Ugh. It's all about the comedy.

A WWE Classics On Demand flashback recapped "The Big Event" that took place on Aug. 28, 1986. Hulk Hogan vs. Paul Orndorff headlined a show that was held at a packed Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, Ont....

Powell's POV: Hogan vs. Orndorff was huge. It's my favorite feud of the early Hogan Era in the WWF.

[Q7] A shot aired of the vacant throne on the stage, and the announcers hyped the triple threat match for after the break... [C]

Another ad aired for the 900th episode of Raw that will air next Monday night while I'm at my fantasy draft. Yes, poor me being forced to drink free beer with my buddies... Sheamus was back on the throne... Ring entrances took place for the Triple Threat match... [C]

Powell's POV: Speaking of fantasy football, I highly recommend MyFantasyLeague.com for your online scoring needs. I moved my leagues there last year when the company I had been going through failed miserably and have zero regrets.

6. Randy Orton defeated John Morrison and Ted DiBiase (w/Maryse) in a Triple Threat match in 4:50. Sheamus got up and headed backstage when the match started. DiBiase was taken out early. He sold while Morrison and Orton traded offense. DiBiase returned and threw Morrison to ringside so that he and Orton could work together.

[Q8] Morrison returned to the ring and they had their three-way exchange with Orton dominating both wrestlers. Orton set up DiBiase for a DDT off the ropes. Morrison tried to break it up with a kick, but Orton ducked out of the way and then DDT'd DiBiase.

A short time later, DiBiase locked in the first part of Dream Street on Orton. Orton threw him off like a bitch and then caught Morrison with an RKO as he leapt off the top rope. Orton pinned Morrison to get the win, and then hit the RKO on DiBiase after the match...

Powell's POV: All Randy Orton. The other guys looked like, well, other guys. I'm fine with showcasing Orton since he's one of the most over wrestlers in the company, but I hate the way they keep wasting Morrison and DiBiase. Morrison jumping into the RKO wasn't nearly as impressive as the RKO on Evan Bourne. It was cool, but it looked like Morrison was just jumping off the top rope to take the move, not like he was going to hit his own big move.

Backstage, Sheamus told Josh Matthews that he didn't need to see Randy Orton wrestle. Sheamus said he's already made his decision and he'll announce it to the entire world in just a few minutes... [C]

An ad aired for John Cena's movie "Legendary"... Another ad aired for Friday's WWE Smackdown television show...

Sheamus was standing in the ring with the WWE Championship belt draped over his shoulder. He said he wasn't going to wait until Night of Champions to defend his title. He called for a referee and said he was going to defend his title now.

Sheamus said he's seen a lot of great superstars who are worthy of a championship match. He said he became WWE Champion because he was given an opportunity, so he's going to return the favor by giving a shot to someone who has never had a WWE Championship match before: Zack Ryder...

7. Sheamus pinned Zack Ryder to retain the WWE Championship in 0:10. Ryder walked onto the stage and said Sheamus made the biggest mistake of his life because everyone watching knows they are looking at the new WWE Champion. The bell rang and Sheamus immediately booted Ryder in the face. Sheamus covered Ryder and scored the clean pin.

After the match, Sheamus took the mic and boasted about his win. He pointed out that the WWE rules say he doesn't have to defend the title for another 30 days. Therefore, he said he's going to take off Night of Champions. Sheamus said he was going to head back to Ireland for some time off.

Sheamus was interrupted by entrance music. Wade Barrett came out and confronted Sheamus in the ring. Barrett recalled winning WWE NXT and earning a title match at the pay-per-view of his choosing. Barrett said he was going to cash that in at the Night of Champions pay-per-view.

The email chime sounded. Cole stood up and announced on behalf of the anonymous general manager that he was obliging Barrett's request. The crowd cheered because Sheamus has to defend the title. The general manager said four other wrestlers will get the opportunity that Sheamus spoke of during his prematch promo.

[Overrun] Sheamus will defend the WWE Championship in a six-pack challenge at Night of Champions. Cole announced that Chris Jericho would be one of those challengers. Jericho came to the ring and smiled at Sheamus. Randy Orton was named the next challenger. He also came out and joined the others in the ring.

Edge was also named a challenger. Edge came out entered the ring. Lawler excitedly pointed out that there was still one more superstar to go. You know, like there was some mystery. John Cena was named the final challenger. Cena ame out and stood in the ring.

Sheamus shoved Barrett into the middle of the ring. All the WWE stars surrounded Barrett. Cena kicked Barrett in the gut, and then Sheamus, Edge, Jericho, and Orton joined him in putting the boots to Barrett. Sheamus cleared Barrett from the ring.

Jericho hit the Codebreaker on Sheamus. Edge speared Jericho. Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment on Edge. Orton hit the RKO on Cena. Orton stood tall as the announcers hyped the six-pack challenge match for the Night of Champions pay-per-view and the 900th episode of Raw...

Powell's POV: A strong closing segment once they got to the big post-match angle. I guess the lousy buyrate drawn by the Fatal Four Way pay-per-view didn't scare WWE away from having multiple challengers in championship matches. It will be interesting to see whether Smackdown has it's own six-pack challenge at Night of Champions.

Overall, the show closed on a strong note, but the rest of the show felt a little lifeless in front of a burned out crowd. The fact that the show was taped and I knew the spoilers probably didn't help matters. It wasn't a horrible show, but it lacked energy. I'll have more to say about the show in Dot Net Audio either late tonight or on Tuesday morning. Thanks for watching along with me tonight. Stop by on Tuesday for Rich Twilling's live coverage of WWE NXT.
