8/6 Hermanstyne's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship, Six man tag team action, Rey Mysterio vs. Drew McIntyre
Aug 6, 2010 - 07:01 PM

By Marv Hermanstyne

WWE Friday Night Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Laredo, TX.

[Q1] The opening montage opened the show and Rey Mysterio came to the ring for an promo. Rey said last week when he got choked slammed by Kane, he talked about almost drowning and said his life flashed before his eyes. He envisioned Kane and said that the looked and walked away from him. He presented his case about why he did not take out Taker and said that he did not have anything to do with Taker. He said Kane was always delusional and he said he doesn't like caskets because its freaks him out. He said caskets were made for the dead and when he dies, God can only judge him and he knows who attacked Taker.

Drew McIntyre interrupted Ray and came down with street clothes. Drew called people who wear masks, criminals. He talked about Rey being a liar for decades and at the expenses of the Undertaker, the truth has finally come out. Drew said that Rey is supposed to be an hero to the fans, but he talked about Punk being injured, Swagger being falsely accused and having his father hospitalized and said it was OK. Drew said that he admired what Rey allegedly did and wished that he taken out Taker himself. He said if he had done it, he would've done it alone and he doesn't believe that Rey didn't do it alone. He said he can take anyone out and talked about destroying Christian arm and how it won't be the same again. He said he had an idea and Rey asked him about the idea and Drew said that he will take care of his arm.

Drew talked to Teddy Long and said if Rey accepted, they will have match for tonight. Rey got head butted but Drew and Rey accepted the challenge and Drew demanded to face Rey. Rey went on a Spanish tirade and shoved Drew to end the segment.
The Legendary trailer is later tonight…[C]

Mind of Marv: Drew saved this segment because Mysterio is dreadful on the mic 98% of the time. Hopefully this is a program if Rey doesn't win back the world title.

[Q2] 1. "Dashing" Cody Rhodes defeated Matt Hardy in 10:10. Cody got the early advantage but Matt countered with aggression in the corner of the ring. Matt his standard offense and hit a bulldog for a nearfall. Cody crawled out of the ring…[C]

The show returned with Matt having the advantage with a leg drop to Cody's midsection for a nearfall. . Matt missed an elbow and Cody hit a springboard kick for a nearfall. Cody applied a crossface to Matt and Matt countered with elbows and a sunset flip for a nearfall. Cody hit a knee to Matt's head and a corkbuster. Cody applied another submission and stomped out Matt. Cody hit some blows to Matt in the corner and hit a scoop slam for a nearfall.

Matt hit an elbow and a modified side neck breaker and another elbow. Matt hit the Side Effect to Cody for a nearfall. Cody hit an schoolboy rollup and a side Russian leg sweep to Matt. He missed a knee drop to Matt and Matt countered with a superplex attempt but Cody hit the CrossRhodes for the win.

Mind of Marv: OK match, but the crowd was dead or asleep for this match. Cody has skills in the ring but he needs more heat. Matt has the heat but he's a mid-card jobber who probably can't wait until his contract expires.

[Q3] Dolph vs. Kofi for the IC title is later tonight and The Legendary trailer was shown…[C]

Drew vs. Rey is the main event for tonight and since Alberto Del Rio is going to bore me to death with this vignette, I will eat these hot wings for the time being…

McCool ripped Rosa Mendes and LayCool and Long bickered who would be the champion. LayCool had a split title and they said they were FLAWLESS…ugh, give me a break.

Vickie introduced Dolph Ziggler for his IC title match, next…[C]

[Q4] The Smack of the Night was Kofi getting gangsta on Dolph last week…

2. Dolph Ziggler defeated Kofi Kingston to win the Intercontinental Championship in 10:45. Kofi kicked the crap out of Dolph to start the matchup. Vickie whined outside of the ring and Kofi hit a belly to back takedown to Dolph. Dolph got back on offense and threw Kofi out but he caught his balance. Kofi got aggressive with a sick clothesline outside of the ring. Dolph hit some boots to Kofi's head and got a one count. Dolph applied a Cobra Clutch and slammed Kofi's head into the ring.

Kofi clotheslined Dolph outside of the ring and hit a suicide Dive by the announcer's table. [C]

The show returned with Dolph applying an armbar submission and worked on Kofi's arm for a nearfall. Dolph used the ropes to weaken Kofi's arm and kicked him in the midsection. Dolph had two nearfall attempts on Kofi after a flying elbow. Dolph hit multiple elbows while Vickie was playing cheerleader. Dolph hit a jumping elbow for a nearfall. Dolph placed the submission again to Kofi and Kofi countered out with chops and punches in the corner. Dolph hit an nasty arm stunner for a nearfall. Vickie cheered Dolph and Kofi hit the TIP on Dolph and Vickie got in the ring to distract the referee.

Dolph hit the Zig Zag on Kofi to win the title and Kofi gave Dolph an old school Stone Cold Steve Austin ass whippin…

[Q5] Vickie called Kofi crazy and the ass kicking continued. I'm in tears here because this is funny as hell…Dolph looked dead as hell. Vickie and the zebras were attending to Dolph…[C]

Mind of Marv: Wow, as much as I wanted Dolph to win this belt, this screwball finish was atrocious. Dolph in my opinion does not need Vickie because he's talented, but he needs some kind of heat placed on him if they plan to push him. Kofi meanwhile is a favorite of mine…he needed some aggression and beating Dolph's ass got instant credibility from this viewer.

The show returned with highlights of what happened minutes ago and the SES came out to good heat. Big Show will face the SES at Summerslam and Punk had the mic. Punk said that he has accomplished a lot in his life like sobriety, a three time straightedge world champion and MITB double winner. He said everyone bought a ticket to see him and couldn't been more proud because they took out the Big Show. Footage of the SES taking out Show was shown last week and Punk paused the video and he bragged about breaking Show's hand. He said it’s a 50/50 shot that Show will sign another autograph because of what the SES did. He said to continue to roll the footage because it gets better. They kept picking on Show and Mercury talked crap about beating on Show. Punk asked everyone if they were happy and he doesn't remember telling any of them to be happy and demanded for them to get on their knees.

Punk said the SES happiness is weakness and when they are happy, they let him down and they slip. Punk said he will not tolerate their weakness or they will have to pack their bag with alcohol and told them to stand up. He said from now on, they will be better than everyone else and they will be happy when he says to be happy. He said satisfaction will be the death of desire. The SES will be in action, next. [C] [Q6]

Mind of Marv: Punk is so damn money on the mic and now I know the end of the SES is near. They will turn on Punk and I can see Gallows and Mercury becoming a tag team which will be beneficial for them and we can finally see Serena wrestle a match. Punk needs to be back in the title picture if you ask me…

3. The Straightedge Society defeated MVP, Chris Masters and JTG in 3:00. Gallows and JTG started the match. Gallows got some early offense in and MVP tagged in and worked on Gallows. Gallows hit a shoulderblock an a scoop slam. Mercury got in the match and hit a jumping knee to MVP. Gallows got back in and hit an uppercut and splash for a nearfall on MVP. Gallows applied an chin lock and MVP tried some offense but the heels continued with the offense with numerous tags.

MVP tried to tag in but Gallows took out JTG and Masters. The heels worked on MVP, Gallows hit a big boot to MVP to win the quick match…The SES united in the ring and we got more grooming tips from Cody.

Mind of Marv: Gallows and Mercury can be one hell of a tag team because they work great together. This could be a sign that the tag division is rising from the dead. Gatecrashers, SES and the Dudebusters are three teams that can be contenders. I'm gonna continue to sour about MVP because the jobbing is getting to me. He needs a heel turn bad…what the hell has he done to do some many jobs week after week?

Cody's grooming tip was on eyebrows…[C]

[Q7] The Raw Rebound was shown and the Summerfest…um, Summerslam card was run down…

Backstage, Kane was caressing a casket and he cut a promo about Rey being a liar and how the casket is the final resting place of Rey. He talked about stuffing him into the casket and the darkness will consume him forever. Twenty Five minutes left in the show, Mysterio came out for his match against McIntyre in the main event, next…[C]

4. Rey Mysterio defeated Drew McIntyre in 14:30. Drew attacked Rey in the corner and Rey came back with kicks to Drew's legs. Drew got aggressive with a nice clothesline and stomped on Rey in the corner. Rey hit a drop toe hold and a moonsault to Drew outside of the ring. Rey kicked Drew and threw him back in the ring. Rey missed a cinton and Drew hit a clothesline for a nearfall. Drew stomped Rey on the side of his face and hit another clothesline for a nearfall. Rey hit an two hurricanranas and tossed Drew outside of the ring. [C] [Q8]

The show returned with Drew still attacking Rey and he hit a nice powerbomb to Rey in the corner for the nearfall. Drew applied pressure to Rey's knee by using the ring post. Drew then slammed Rey on the announce table. I could of sworn the announce table was destroyed by Kofi an hour ago…but anyway, Rey beat the ten count by getting in at nine. Drew applied a key lock to Rey and Rey hit a kick but Drew countered into a face first power bomb for a nearfall. Drew hit an gutbuster for a nearfall. Drew continued to work on Rey's midsection.

Rey kicked out of the submission and hit an DDT to Drew. Rey hit a cinton and moonsault for a nearfall. Drew hit a tilt-o-whirl backbreaker to Rey for a nearfall. Drew rammed Rey into the corner and out of frustration, he setup for the Future Shock but Rey converted into the 619 but Drew moved and Rey countered into a rollup for the win.

Post match, Rey was going to make an announcement, but Kane rolled out an casket with a smile on his face. Drew attacked Rey and Kane scared Drew off. Kane waited for Rey and he ran off from Kane and the casket. Rey said it wasn't him, but it was Kane…

Kane had a tantrum in the middle of the ring and said that he loves his brother. Kane had a hard time forcing himself to cry and looked at the sky to end the show…

Mind of Marv: Another crappy finish to a what was a pretty good main event. Drew isn't quite there yet to main event on the regular, but he's not far from it. As far as this feud and storyline, ugh…I'm tired of it already. Anyone with a mind of the wrestling business and is aware of WWE's predictable BS, we had to see this coming. Rey loses a meaningless feud, Taker comes back and we get a Brothers of Destruction feud that I DON'T want to see. Overall, Smackdown was on fire for two weeks straight and I was preying for a third straight week, but I jinxed myself.

Chris Shore will have the Smackdown Hitlist in the morning because he experienced some computer issues, but he watched the show. Any feedback should be forwarded to dotnetmarv@gmail.com and I'll see you next week.
