7/27 Twilling's WWE NXT Live Coverage: One Rookie will be eliminated, Kaval vs. Husky Harris, Zack Ryder vs. Percy Watson
Jul 27, 2010 - 09:00 PM |
By Rich Twilling
WWE NXT on the Syfy Network
Taped earlier tonight in Corpus Christi, Tex.
[Q1] The opening video aired. I have to admit; the intro song has grown on me. Never thought I would say that. Fireworks lit up the stage. Michael Cole and Josh Mathews welcomed us to the show. The Pros were already on the stage. Mark Henry looked like he was singing into the microphone.
Matt Striker introduced the Rookies and they all came out to the ring. Eli Cottonwood's shirt said, "Mustache." Okay. My shirt says, "Oreos." Striker explained that there would be an elimination tonight.
Striker introduced a promo contest in which they could talk about anything but why they should not be eliminated. Lucky Cannon said his topic was "friends." He said he didn't have any friends growing up, except for one, named "Nobody." He said because of Nobody, he became a somebody...
Twill's Two Cents: Really?!?
Eli's topic was not mustaches, it was "eyes." He said he could look into the eyes of The Undertaker. The crowd shit all over it. Husky Harris said his competition looks like Tarzan and fights like Jane. He cut the best promo of the bunch...
Michael McGillicutty made the mistake of calling out The Miz for calling him 'mediocre' last week. Miz ate him for lunch. Nice going Mike. Alex Riley was solid in saying he was the only star in this class. Miz liked it.
Percy Watson once again said, "Oh yeah!" a lot. He is still hilarious with that laugh that he does. Cole and Mathews introduced a video package for Watson. Everyone had good things to say about him, including Cody Rhodes... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: I'm surprised Percy made it through that video unscathed. By the way, Husky and Riley can both lay claim to winning the promo contest. Is Eli trying to be the next Heidenreich? That way, he can have a PPV match with Taker and his way with Michael Cole.
[Q2] 1. Percy Watson (with MVP) defeated Zack Ryder in 2:46. Ryder was wearing short tights instead of the one short leg and one long leg. MVP stood on the apron in Percy's glasses to watch the match. Percy hit his floating DDT and followed with a dropkick motion into a splash for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Odd match with Percy pretty much dominating, hitting his finishers, and then getting the pin. Positive for Percy; not so much for Ryder.
John Morrison showed Eli Cottonwood footage of his performance in the obstacle course last week. Morrison started calling him 'Eli Rottenwood.' That's tame compared to what he is called in the Member's Forum. Morrison pumped him up for his match against McGillicutty... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: I do remember the Mustache thing from a few weeks ago. That is his thing. Oreos are mine. Dare I say Eli has a personality? Kudos to Morrison for sporting the shirt too.
The obstacle course footage from last week was shown. McGillicutty won and thus, cannot be eliminated tonight...
[Q3] 2. Michael McGillicutty (with Kofi Kingston) defeated Eli Cottonwood (with John Morrison) in 3:36.. Okay, the Pros are on the apron again. Way to make it more exhibition-like WWE. Eli controlled the early portion of the match, but McGillicutty hit his swinging neckbreaker for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Eli is definitely not an offensive dynamo in the ring. Forgettable match.
A Kaval video package aired. Most everyone loved him. Cody said he should be the next breakout star. Miz said he needed to have a larger than life personality and Morrison said he takes things too seriously...
Backstage, Husky Harris and Kaval had a backstage interaction. Solid segment to hype their upcoming match... [C]
Jamie Keyes is the ring announcer. Is she new? I think she's new. Ashley Valence has been on the show, but she was backstage. I hope she didn't get an Adamle contract...
3. Husky Harris (with Cody Rhodes) defeated Kaval (with Layla and Michelle McCool) in 3:10. Husky scored a nearfall with a closeline that turned Kaval inside out. Cole continued talking shit. It's funny how and when certain people get brave.
[Q4] Husky's facial expressions are far superior to everyone else's. LayCool were accidentally knocked to the floor. Well dumbasses, that's a good reason to not be on the apron during the match. Husky hit a reverse brain buster and his back splash for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: That was actually a match I would have liked to see go about ten minutes. The length was disappointing although the finish was somewhat innovative. Again though, get off the apron Pros. As the veterans, you of all people should know to get your asses on the floor.
Striker said the elimination would take place after the break... [C]
Did you know? People watch NXT much more than any program on a bunch of second rate cable networks...
The Raw Rebound aired focusing on Team WWE vs. Team Nexus...
The Pros were shown and the votes have been tallied... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: Wait a minute. This show is going to go to an overrun, and they have an entire segment of a Raw Rebound and SummerSlam card rundown? By the way, who else would be freaked out if Rey Mysterio jumped out nowhere to surprise you at a 7-11?
[Overrun] Here we go. McGillicutty jumped up to number one and literally nobody reacted. Kaval was number two and Cole said he should be last. Twilling Note: I hope Kaval kicks Cole in the face.
Riley was number three, Watson number four, and Cannon number five. The crowd could not care less about this. Husky Harris and Eli Cottonwood were the final two remaining. The suspense is killing me. Not really. Husky checked in at number six, and Eli was eliminated...
Striker gave him the mic. He elected to attack Husky Harris instead. The rest of the Rookies tried to get a piece of Eli but he fought them all off. He then walked up the ramp and shoved Morrison.
Striker asked Husky why he keeps coming so close to being eliminated. Husky said if he is not stepping up, stepping up doesn't exist. McGillicutty said he would finish the competition undefeated and will be a future World Champion.
Riley said he would climb to the number one spot and shoved the mic in McGillicutty's chest. Miz yelled, "Hit him!" They brawled. Eli ran back down and a huge brawl ensued...
Twill's Two Cents: The right guy got eliminated, but I was really surprised to see McGillicutty move all the way up to number one. Husky is still getting a raw deal, but such is life. If Husky was fat and lovable like Dusty Rhodes, he'd be number one. Not sure what to make of the brawl or Cole's bias against Kaval. Decent, but forgettable show tonight.
Thank you for following along with me tonight. Check back tomorrow for my NXT Hitlist and see you back here next Tuesday.
