ECW on Sci-Fi Network
Live in London, Ont.
[Q1] A recap video managed to make it seem like the first 100 episodes of ECW were somewhat entertaining... The opening video aired... Fireworks exploded on the stage... Tazz introduced the show from ringside. He said controversy has always swirled around the brand and it still does today...
Tony Chimel introduced Mike Adamle as the voice of ECW. The crowd booed. Tazz said he walked off last week in support of Adamle. In the ring, Adamle said he lost his cool and he needs to apologize. He issued his first apology to Tazz and his second to the fans. He said he's worked as a broadcaster longer than most people have been alive. He ran through his list of credentials and said, "But you know what, I had no idea how hard this job was and how great the ECW fans are."
Adamle admitted that he's made mistakes. "My purpose in being here tonight is to say that I love the WWE and I love working for the ECW," he said. "And I will do everything in my power to be as professional as I can and to bring you the best possible product that ECW fans deserve. Despise me if you will, but enjoy the 100th episode of ECW on Sci-Fi. Thanks for listening."
Powell's POV: All that was a setup for Adamle to kiss ass? I'm fine with it if they start having him play it straight and stop feeding him goofball lines.
1. Mike Knox defeated Tommy Dreamer in an Extreme Rules match in 6:30. Stevie Richards sat in on commentary. As if Adamle didn't kiss enough ass, Dreamer walked out wearing a Toronto Blue Jays jersey and pushed a shopping cart filled with weapons to the ring. I'm sure he's a huge fan. Dreamer used the weapons on Knox and then put the shopping cart in the ring. He tried to suplex Knox onto the cart, but Knox fought him off and bodyslammed Dreamer onto it.
Knox climbed to the top rope for no good reason. Dreamer caught him and tied him in the tree of woe. Dreamer placed the trash can and the shopping cart in front of Knox and used a baseball slide to drive them into Knox's face. Later, Dreamer set up a table in the corner of the ring, but Knox suplexed him through it for a nearfall. In the end, Knox hit his finisher (Adamle called it "Knox Out") on a chair and scored the pin...
Powell's POV: A spirited effort by both men. I'm happy they didn't give the token win to Dreamer just because he's an ECW Original. Knox has been progressing nicely and there was no reason to slow down his momentum simply because it's the 100th episode.
Highlights aired of The Zombie from ECW's first episode on June 13, 2006. Sandman arrived and caned the hell out of him, but the damage was already done...
[Q2] [C] After the break, Kelly Kelly performed a dance routine. Her old dance partner Layla came out and they had a dance off. They just kept dancing and shoving each other. Finally, Kelly slapped Layla. Kelly climbed on top of Layla and punched her repeatedly...
Highlights aired of Hardcore Holly slicing his back open when Rob Van Dam put him through a table at ringside... [C] Highlights aired of Roddy Piper shoving a cake in Matt Striker's face. The Boogeyman came out and spit worms in Striker's face...
Highlights aired of Chuck Palumbo vs. C.M. Punk from last week... Backstage, Lena interviewed Chuck. "It looks like you got as good as you gave," she said. Palumbo responded by saying he'd knock out Punk if he got in his face again...
Powell's POV: Call me crazy, but I think Punk's going to get in his face again.
[Q3] 2. Kofi Kingston pinned Matt Striker in 1:05. Shelton Benjamin sat in on commentary. Adamle asked Shelton if he could beat Kofi. "That's like asking if you can stay here for the entire broadcast," Shelton responded. "Of course I can beat him." What? There were a few seconds of awkward silence.
Quick match. Kingston hit Trouble in Paradise for the clean win. Shelton darted to the ring and hit Striker with his finisher... A backstage shot aired of Colin Delaney walking down a hallway. He was greeted by C.M. Punk, a group of additional babyface wrestlers, Barry Windham, and some people I've never seen before in my life. They all clapped for him as the announcers reminded viewers that he would be attempting to earn an ECW contract... [C]
Powell's POV: How many chances is Delaney going to get to earn a contract?
Highlights aired of The New Breed beating The ECW Originals...
3. Colin Delaney defeated Armando Estrada in 2:25 to earn an ECW contract. Estrada came out wearing a vest. Adamle and Tazz marveled at his abdominal muscles. Adamle said he's a former Cuban wrestling champion. He said he quit wrestling in Cuba "because he ran out of good wrestlers to wrestle against."
Estrada dominated the match, but Delaney rolled him up and scored the upset win. Afterward, Colin ran around ringside and celebrated with the fans. Tazz caught up to Delaney and interviewed him. Colin thanked the fans for supporting him and Dreamer for mentoring him...
Powell's POV: They haven't specified what type of contract Delaney earned, so they could extend this if they really wanted to. I enjoyed Colin's early squash losses and I thought the angle had a lot of potential. It didn't play out as well as it could have. That being said, the live crowd popped for his win this week and he is over to some extent. By the way, I forgot to mention that Armando is in really good shape. Who knew?
Highlights aired from Smackdown of Vickie Guerrero stripping Undertaker of the World Hvt. Championship and banning his still unnamed finishing hold... [C]
[Q4] At ringside, Adamle and Tazz welcomed John Morrison and The Miz to the announcers table. Miz gave Tazz a Chick Magnet t-shirt...
4. Kane and C.M. Punk defeated Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely at 13:15. Neely has already changed his look in that he's wearing trunks and boots and has grown his hair out a little. The biggest difference is that he's not wearing a suit. Morrison said it was important for Kane and Punk to find common ground. He assumed the thing they have in common is that they both have some pretty big daddy issues. "I don't either two of them get out that often." Funny even though he misspoke at the end.
Morrison also ran through what he hates about Punk: his tattoos, his lifestyles, his facial hair, his tights, his kick pads. Funny. Solid in-ring action with the fans chanting for Punk leading into the break. [C]
[Overrun] After the break, the heels took turns working over Punk. Neely's offense consisted mostly of punches and kicks. Punk made the hot tag to Kane, who beat the hell out of Chavo. In strange spot, Kane picked up Chavo and dropped him awkwardly on the middle of the top rope.
Kane tagged in Punk, who made quick work of Chavo. Kane cleared Neely from the ring and then Punk hit the GTS on Chavo and pinned him. After the match, Kane and Punk stared at Morrison and Miz, who raised their title belts into the air. In the ring, Punk held up his Money in the Bank briefcase to close the show...
Powell's POV: A solid version of ECW. I'm actually looking forward to the likely Kane and Punk vs. Morrison and Miz match. Adamle was better tonight. Of course, having so many wrestlers sit in on commentary is a nice way to fill time and limit Adamle's role.
