May 20, 2010 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

Superstars on WGN America
Taped in Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

[Q1] The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Michael "I Got Knocked the F*** Out" Cole and Jerry "The King" Lawler welcomed us to Superstars…Vladimir Kozlov made his ring entrance. Santino came out to an INSANE pop. Santino got a mic and said thanks to the crowd. He said he has seen a change in Kozlov since he had asked to be partners, "In the tag team sense of course." He said if Ivan Dragoff and Rocky Balboa could become friends, so could they.

He said they were both martial arts experts. He said they both came from a far away country. He tried to get the crowd to chant USA! He apologized and tried to get the crowd to chant "North America." He did the, "If I can change," speech from the end of Rocky IV. He said the bell was about to ring and when it did, they could fight or they could become the greatest tag team in history.…

1. Vladimir Kozlov defeated Santino Marella 0:37. The bell rang and Santino cowered. Kozlov just looked at him, and Santino clapped him on the shoulder. Kozlov looked at the hand and then hit the three headbuts while Santino screamed. Kozlov hit his finisher for the win…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Wow. The Santino cheers were nuts. And he was funny on the stick. But that really could have been spared. A 30 second match after a five minute promo. Unreal.

Back from commercial, Goldust made his entrance. Regal was out next…

[Q2] 2. Goldust defeated William Regal at 4:28. The first 30 seconds occurred in the last quarter. Goldust tossed Regal out of the first tie up and worked strikes. Regal fought back and kicked Goldust in the side of the head the pushed Goldust through the ropes. Goldust was picking at his ear and the ref stopped the match because of blood. After about a minute stoppage, Goldust fought back until Regal reversed a DDT attempt. Regal went for the knee trembler, but Goldust moved and hit the Final Cut for the win…

Cole setup a video that showed Danielson kicking his ass…[C]

Shore’s Slant: See, here's the thing. I don't mind WWE saying "no more blading." That's cool. It's your product. But these stoppages for nicks on the cheek are getting old, quickly. It destroys everything these guys were doing in the ring. It's just silly. Was I the only one who marked out when Danielson attacked Cole? C'mon. You know you did!

Back from commercial, Todd Grisham and Matt Striker took over on commentary as Cody Rhodes made his ring entrance. Chris Masters was out next…

3. Cody Rhodes defeated Chris Masters at 8:16. Cody started with an arm bar that Masters powered out of it and made his titties dance. Cody tried for a kick, but Masters leg whipped him. He charged, and Masters leveled him. Masters worked the arm. Cody punched out and hit the ropes. Masters countered with a back drop.

[Q3] Cody went to the floor and Masters followed. Cody racked Master's arm across the post and slid into the ring, telling the ref to count. Masters recovered into the break…[C]

Back at 5:21, Cody hit a side Russian leg sweep. A video showed Rhodes driving Masters into the post during the break. Cody continued to work the arm with rest holds. Masters reversed an arm bar and hit a short arm clothesline to take control. Masters hit another clothesline and covered for two. He tried to hook the Masterlock, but Cody slipped out and hit a shoulder breaker. He followed with CrossRhodes for the win…

A video package recapped the Cena vs. Batista feud…The announce team ran down the Over the Limit card…The announce team hyped the main event…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Wow, Cody is starting to really impress me. It appears that he was right when he said we would see a new him. He's doing much better in the ring, and in general in getting me to care. Nice work by both men here. Of course, after the stinker first half of the show, Divas would have been an upgrade.

[Q4] Back from commercial, Dolph Ziggler made his ring entrance. Christian was out next…

4. Christian defeated. Dolph Ziggler at 9:49. Ziggler started with a quick roll up for two, and Christian came right back with a shoulder tackle for one. Ziggler stood on the apron and Christian charged. Ziggler hit a shoulder and tossed Christian to the floor. He tried to stomp on Christian, but missed and Christian pulled him down. Christian climbed back in the ring and hit a dropkick through the ropes. He rolled Ziggler back in the ring and they battled. Christian tried for a suplex, but Ziggler reversed and dumped Christian over the top. Both men recovered into the break…[C]

Back at 5:59, Ziggler had a body scissor on Christian. Christian fought out, but Ziggler hit a Fameassor for two. He worked Christian in the corner until the ref pulled him off. He charged, but Christian moved to the side and hit the pendulum kick to take control. Christian worked his offense, hitting a one man flapjack and missile dropkick for two. Ziggler tried to dump Christian over the top, but Christian hit a reverse hangman.

Christian went to the top for a crossbody, but Ziggler rolled through for two. Ziggler locked on the sleeper, but Christian reversed into a reverse DDT for two. Christian hit a kick in the corner and tried for a Sunset flip, but Ziggler dropped to his knees for two. Ziggler hit Christian in the ribs and tried for the ZigZag, but Christian held the ropes. Christian hit the flying elbow, followed by the Kill Switch for the win.

Shore’s Slant: Hot damn. That was a good match. Christian seems to be wrestling with some intensity for the first time in a year, and Ziggler looked very good in defeat. Smackdown lived up to its name tonight when looking at which show brought the better matches. I'll have more to say tomorrow on the hitlist. Thanks for reading and I'll see you then.
