5/11 Twilling's WWE NXT Live Coverage: The WWE Pros will vote off one of the NXT Rookies; who will be the first to be eliminated?
May 11, 2010 - 09:00 PM

By Rich Twilling

WWE NXT on the Syfy Network
Taped earlier tonight in Buffalo, N.Y.

[Q1] Various highlights over the show's existence was shown. The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the stage. Michael Cole and Josh Mathews welcomed us to the show. Matt Striker introduced each rookie individually and they all made their way to the ring.

The rookies lined up in front of the ring facing the stage. Striker showed the footage of the NXT rookies defeating four WWE Raw wrestlers last night. Striker then reminded us about asking each rookie last week who should be eliminated.

Michael Tarver was shown saying he should be eliminated. Striker informed him he was eliminated because WWE management did not believe in someone who did not believe in himself. Tarver threw a fit before leaving up the ramp.

Striker approached Daniel Bryan and reminded him he also said he should be eliminated. Bryan was informed of his elimination as well. Bryan left to polite applause. Striker said one rookie would still be eliminated tonight...

Twill's Two Cents: The eliminations were part of the reason to watch the show; they are throwing away three guys tonight? I'm convinced we'll see each guy again so I am not too sad about seeing any of these guys go right now.

Heath Slater vs. Wade Barrett was hyped for after the break... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Jason Powell is discussing the show with Dot Net Members in the Member's Forum tonight so head over there to chat with him. Note to NXT Rookies: do not say you should be the one eliminated.

[Q2] 1. Wade Barrett defeated Heath Slater in 3:09. Barrett was knocked to the floor but took control of the match with a big closeline. Slater fought back with a series of punches and a closeline. He scored a nearfall.

Barrett picked up Slater for his finisher but Heath wiggled out. He hit a jumping reverse neckbreaker for a two count. Slater attempted a high cross body, but Barrett caught him and hit his finisher (fireman's carry into a front slam) for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Decent showing for both guys in a three minute match. I'm guessing Barrett will be the new number one seed.

Backstage, Striker interviewed Tarver. Tarver asked if Striker knew what it was like to wonder where his next meal will come from. He said the elimination was fair but the competition was not. Striker asked him what was next. Tarver just walked away. Striker wished him the best in his future endeavors...

Twill's Two Cents: It was suggested to me from a number of readers that Tarver might end up working for Ted DiBiase on Raw. Based on his comments about not having a lot of money, perhaps that might happen. Time will tell.

Skip Sheffield and William Regal made their way to the ring. Skip displayed some more heelish tendencies than we are used to seeing from him. Darren Young made his entrance solo...

Twill's Two Cents: My early prediction is that Sheffield will be the next to go. Out of who is remaining, Sheffield is the most bland of the bunch. I like his work in the ring and appreciate his work ethic, but his character is just sort of there.

2. Skip Sheffield (with William Regal) defeated Darren Young in 3:05. Skip dominated with his power early on but missed a splash off the ropes. Young hit two inverted atomic drops. He even hit a John Cena-like shoulder block. Ship hit his finisher out of the blue for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Well, maybe I'm wrong about that prediction. Sheffield can go in the ring and Young can definitely sell. Nice showing for Skip.

[Q3] The announcers hyped the third elimination for later in the show... [C]

The Smackdown Rebound aired. It was the same one as last night with Drew McIntyre eliminating Matt Hardy, and himself, from Smackdown. Christian vs. Kofi Kingston for the Intercontinental Championship was hyped for Friday's show...

The announcers ran down the strong looking Over the Limit pay-per-view card. They then showed footage of Michael Tarver and Daniel Bryan being eliminated earlier in the show...

Striker interviewed Bryan backstage. Bryan said the process was fair and he never makes excuses. He said he would find a way to make it. He was asked if he regretted leaving the independent scene. He said Daniel Bryan never wrestled on the independent scene.

He then found some fire and passion and said there was another guy who kicked ass in the ring and was a champion all over the world. He said it was the end of Daniel Bryan, but to look out for Bryan Danielson... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Wow, Bryan Danielson is a better wrestler and a better promo than Daniel Bryan. That is the guy we all wanted to see from the start. So, can anyone just change their name and be somebody else like that?

[Q4] 3. David Otunga defeated Justin Gabriel in 2:44. Gabriel utilized some amateur takedowns early, but was thwarted after a springboard attempt off the top rope. Otunga scored a couple of nearfalls.

Otunga locked in an abdominal stretch. That move is all over the place now. Gabriel hit a series of kicks and a forearm for a two count. David fought back and hit his Rock Bottom/spinebuster for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Three formula matches from the rookies tonight but it's obvious they have all improved over the past several weeks. Otunga doesn't utilize power moves as well as Sheffield does, but he is the complete package.

The final elimination was hyped one last time... [C]

Matt Striker stood with the rookies in front of the ring. He reminded everyone what the winner receives (a title match on a pay-per-view). Striker asked the remaining six who should be eliminated. Young said Barrett. Slater said Otunga.

Gabriel said he didn't care because he has immunity, but then said Otunga because he has an attitude problem. Sheffield said it was his show and he also said Otunga should be eliminated because "he does not belong here with me."

Twill's Two Cents: Why does Sheffield feel entitled like he is the only guy that should win the show?

Otunga said everyone should be eliminated but then narrowed it down to Heath Slater. Barrett said it didn't matter because they will all fall in the end, but he said Otunga as well. A graphic was shown of the pros and Striker put up the Pro's Poll.

Barrett was number one, Otunga was number two, Gabriel was number three, and Slater was number four. Sheffield and Young stepped forward. Young was revealed as number five, and Sheffield was eliminated.

Skip said he has been misguided from the beginning. He then said William Regal was not to blame. He gave good advice and Skip should have listened to him. Skip said he would be back. Striker said another rookie would be eliminated next week...

Twill's Two Cents: Let me get this straight. Sheffield was misguided for twelve weeks, but it was his own fault he did not listen to William Regal. So, he misguided himself? Okay, got it. I think a heel turn could do him some good and I'm sure he will be back.
