Apr 30, 2010 - 07:00 PM

By Chris Shore

Smackdown on MyNetwork TV
Taped on 4/27/10 in Hershey, Pa.

[Q1] A video recapped the Draft…The opening video aired, followed by the pyro, and Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcomed us to Smackdown. Teddy Long's music came out and he said the draft was "hizzle for shizzle." He said Smackdown got the better of the draft. Is he drunk tonight? Anyway, he introduced Kofi Kingston who made his ring entrance. Jericho was out next while a video showed his win on Raw that brought Kofi over.

Jericho cut a promo and said he proved he was the face of Smackdown. He said in the past year, he had put on the best matches and turned Smackdown around. He said his work was done, and he had to move on to be the face of Raw. He said the fans would miss him. They chanted, "You suck." He said he didn't and told the fans to learn from what he told them and grow up. Kofi grabbed the mic and said, "Grow up? How about you shut up?" He said if Jericho didn't want to shut up, he could help him with a, "Boom, boom, boom.!"…

1. Kofi Kingston defeated Chris Jericho at 9:31. Jericho drove Kofi back in the corner and worked strikes. Kofi reversed the whip and jumped up to do ten punches. Jericho powerbombed him out of the corner and both men recovered into the break…[C]

Back at 3:53, Jericho hit a baseball slide that spilled Kofi to the floor. Jericho mocked Kofi's Boom and then rolled him back in the ring to lock in a rest hold. Kofi fought back and whipped Jericho to the corner, but Jericho moved on the splash attempt and covered for two. Jericho choked Kofi on the ropes, and then berated him.

[Q2] Kofi went on offense and hit several blows. Jericho tried to hook the Walls of Jericho, but Kofi flipped out. Kofi tried for Trouble in Paradise, but Jericho grabbed the feet and locked in Walls of Jericho. Kofi made the ropes and Jericho argued with the ref. Kofi hit a slam and tried for the Boom Drop, but Jericho rolled away, and popped up and hit the Codebreaker. Kofi sold it like a stunner and fell to the floor. Jericho rolled Kofi back in the ring and covered for two. Jericho slapped and mocked Kofi. He called for the crowd to chant Boom, and they booed. Kofi suddenly popped up and hit Trouble in Paradise for the win…

Jack Swagger was shown backstage and he cut a promo. He said he was invited to the White House by the greatest President we have ever had, George W. Bush. He drew major heat as the show cut to commercial…[C]

Shore’s Slant: A fun way to open the show. Many thanks to Chris Jericho for reminding us that Kofi can wrestle. I hate this won't be a feud going forward, but they did a good job here.

Back from commercial, Jericho was shown backstage mouthing off to someone off camera. He said the person should have listened to him and went on and on. He asked if the person was listening now. Suddenly a big ass fist flew across the frame and Jericho hit the ground. Big Show said, "Yeah, I heard you," and walked off…

In the ring, Chavo Guerrero had a mic and cut a promo on being back in Smackdown. He said he was no longer under the thumb of the Raw guest host. He said he wasn't the only Guerrero on Smackdown either, and told the crowd to welcome him back. Kane's pyro popped and he came to the ring. Chavo got in his face and Kane choke slammed him. Kane took the mic and said, "Welcome back, Chavo." He popped his ring pyro and left…The announce team hyped Morrison vs. Rhodes for next…

Shore’s Slant: So I guess Show is a face? He knocked out Miz and now Jericho. That'll put most anybody in the face category. And I hate to admit it, but Kane cracked me up right there. Even though it was predictable, I thought it was pretty funny.

[Q3][C] Back from commercial, Shad cut a pre-recorded promo on the new Smackdown roster members. He assured all of them, that it was not their time, but his time…John Morrison made his ring entrance.

Shore’s Slant: A moment of silence for the last time we will see this on my show…

Cody Rhodes made his ring entrance. Grisham reminded us that the last time we saw Rhodes; he was getting punted by Orton…

2. Cody Rhodes defeated John Morrison at 11:11. The first thing out of Grisham's mouth was how much alike Morrison and Rhodes were. This is why I don't listen to commentary. Morrison hit an elbow to the mouth and went on the attack. He whipped Cody to the corner, but Cody jumped over a charging Morrison and hit the ropes. Morrison hit the leg lariat, followed by a standing shooting star press for two. Cody went to the floor and Morrison followed. He started to roll Cody back in the ring, but Cody hit him and then did a Chuck kick off the stairs...[C]

Back at 5:03, Cody had a rest hold on Morrison. Morrison fought out, but Cody hit a drop kick for two. He hit a front suplex, and a rolling knee for two before going back to the rest hold. Morrison made his feet and Cody pulled him down by the hair. He stomped on Morrison while the crown chanted "Morrison." Morrison tried to fight back, But Cody hit a moonsault from the top, followed by several strikes and a near fall.

Cody missed another knee drop, and Morrison hit a drop kick to take control. Morrison hit several blows and then rolled Cody up. Cody kicked out, and Morrison followed with the flying Chuck for two. Cody reversed the next hold into a CrossRhodes, but Morrison reversed into a one man flapjack for two. They fought in the corner, and Morrison tried for a sunset flip. Cody caught him and hit the Alabama Slam for two. Morrison hit a kick on Cody and followed with the running knee for two when Cody grabbed the rope. Morrison hit a Pele Kick and tried for a clothesline, but Cody ducked and reversed into CrossRhodes for the win.

[Q4] Jack Swagger was once again shown backstage. He said he led his Oklahoma Sooners to three National Championships…Edge was shown backstage heading towards the ring. He got a big pop…[C]

Shore’s Slant: There you go. How good is Morrison? He made Cody "What are knee pads?" Rhodes look like a total star. OK, Cody did a pretty good job too, but if you think I'm going to put over my baby daddy getting beat on his way out the door, well you don't know me very well do you. (Psst. Cody really looked better than I remember him being, so maybe it's him, maybe it's Morrison. But it was a good match.)

Back from commercial, a video recapped Edge's appearance in the triple threat match on Monday. Edge made his ring entrance to a good pop. At least I won't have to hear him introduced as the "Rated-R Pooperstar," anymore. Edge cut a promo about being drafted to Raw. He said he didn't want to go. He said Smackdown has always felt like his show, and the crowd like his family. He said the crowd's support helped him come back faster. He said he wanted to thank the fans and tell them he loved them.

Christian's music hit and all 100 people in the audience over seven went nuts. Christian got in the ring and put over how great it was to have Edge and Christian together in the ring. He said Christian was his best friend and wished him luck on Smackdown. Christian said they went back to sixth grade together and broke into WWE together. He said they traveled the world together and won seven tag team titles together. Christian said that meant he knew Edge better than anyone. He said he knew Edge better than Edge did. He said that's why he knows everything Edge just said was crap.

Edge looked shocked. Christian said the people respected Edge for coming back from the injuries, but he never respected them back. Edge said he understood, it wasn't about him, it was about Christian. He said Christian was jealous because of his nine world titles. Christian said he would be world champion soon, but he would earn it. He said Edge was a liar. Edge admitted it and the crowd did nothing. He said he was the puppet master and the crowd were his puppets. He said he had the chanting "spear" or whatever he wanted.

Christian said he realized that Edge had just used the people, and that Edge had ultimately used him. He said all the guys in the back had asked him since he came back when it would be Edge and Christian again. He said he didn't want to see Edge and Christian ever again. He said he wanted to see Edge vs. Christian, and he wanted to see it right now. Edge said no and started to walk away.

[Q5] Christian started to say something, and Edge attacked from behind. He tried for the spear, but Christian kicked him and tried for the Kill Switch. Edge escaped and backed up the ramp. Christian said he had a better chant than "spear" and led the crowd in a "Na-na, hey-hey, goodbye," chant…[C]

Shore’s Slant: That was a lot of fun. The crowd had no idea they just saw Edge turn heel, so WWE has some work to do to make it stick. Again, I wish this was the feud we were getting. This Smackdown feels completely transitional. It's almost like CM Punk's title run after Jeff Hardy left: pointless and needing the Undertaker to end it.

Back from commercial, Edge was shown walking backstage. Josh Matthews ran up and asked Edge if there would ever be an Edge vs. Christian match. Edge said Christian talked a big game, but Christian didn't want that match to happen because it would turn out poorly. Show walked up behind Edge. He said it was a shame that Edge vs. Christian wouldn't happen, just like it was a shame Show vs. Edge wouldn't happen. He knocked Edge out and walked away…

Back ringside, team LayCool was already in the ring. Ouch. Beth made her entrance, followed by Kelly Kelly…

3. Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly defeated Michelle McCool and Layla (w/Vickie Guerrero) at 3:38. Kelly and McCool started. It fell apart from there until Beth tagged in. She took out McCool and hit a slingshot suplex on Layla. Kelly tagged in and they botched her Fameassor finisher for the win…

Jack Swagger was once again showed backstage. He mentioned all the scholarships he turned down before choosing Oklahoma…

Shore’s Slant: That was terrible. Not much more to say about the match. Who does Swagger think he is, Matt Hardy Version 1.0?

[Q6][C] Back from commercial, Chris Master made his pecs dance. He called it a masterpiece. Jeez…Dolph Ziggler made his ring entrance. Ziggler said he did everyone a favor this week, and said it was the proudest moment of his career. A video recapped him putting Hornswoggle to sleep. Ziggler said Hornswoggle was now in leprechaun heaven…

The announce team setup a video that recapped the Hardy vs. McIntyre feud. Backstage, Matthews asked Hardy about it. Hardy said he had never been injured like he had last week. He said the attack took its toll on him both physically and mentally. He said he would be back, and McIntyre attacked from behind. McIntyre hit the Future Shock DDT and left. Hardy sold the attack into the break as the refs checked on him…[C]

Shore’s Slant: This is the oddest Smackdown I have ever covered. It's not bad per se, it just feels odd and disjointed. There was no follow up to Ziggler, and this attack really caught me by surprise. I guess Matt is taking time off.

Back from commercial, JTG cut a pre-recorded promo about his future. He said he would look good with gold around his waist. He then said something I can't translate, but I think it roughly means, "I am coming to win a title." I think…

[Q7] CM Punk and company made their ring entrance. Punk showed off his hair and cut a promo on his match at Extreme Rules. He put over his win, even after Gallows and Serena were "unfairly" ejected from ringside. He started to do his, "better than you," line and MVP's music hit. He came to the ramp and said he was back on Smackdown. CM Punk said he was talking. MVP said he knew that, and that was why he had to apologize to the Smackdown audience. He made his way to the ring as he said he was sorry that the people had to listen to Punk's lame rhetoric every week.

He said he was the savior tonight, he was going to save the people from Punk's garbage. He said Friday nights used to be cool with the VIP lounge. He said now Fridays were boring because of Punk. But, he said that Fridays would be hot again. He attacked Punk and then Gallows. They got the better of him and beat on him. Mysterio's music hit and he ran down. He low-barred Gallows into falling to the floor, and hit a kick on Punk. He and MVP whipped Punk, but Gallows grabbed him and dragged him to the floor. Striker said we might have a match after the break…[C]

4. Rey Mysterio and MVP defeated The Straight Edge Society at 5:06. The bell rang as soon as the show came back, and MVP and Gallows started. MVP hit a flying punch and then tagged in Rey for a wheelbarrow lift into a splash for two. Gallows no sold and attacked Rey. He tagged in Punk who worked knees on Rey in the corner. Rey hit a back suplex and back to back leg drops for two. Punk tagged in Gallows and hit a suplex, Gallows followed with a splash for two.

Punk tagged back in and worked an arm bar. Rey tried to fight out and Punk hit a slam for two. Rey reversed the next lift into a DDT. Rey and Punk got hot tags, and MVP went nuts. He hit strikes and kicks on Gallows, followed by a facebuster. MVP hit the Ballin Elbow and covered, but Punk broke the count. Rey hit the West Coast Pop on Punk, and MVP put Gallows on the ropes. Rey hit the 619, and MVP followed with PayDirt, which he apparently calls the 305, for the win. Post match, the masked SES man ran in and hit a swinging neckbreaker on Mysterio before escaping through the crowd…

[Q8] Backstage, Jack Swagger said something about giving a commencement speech or something. I quit listening a few facts ago…[C]

Shore’s Slant: A decent match that doesn't leave me hopeful for a MVP heel turn anytime soon. All four men, as usual, worked hard and entertained. I wouldn't have minded a few more minutes, but it was good while it lasted. I'll be glad when this strange Smackdown is over.

Back from commercial, Jack Swagger was introduced and he made his ring entrance. Swagger said when he was a young boy, and the crowd booed me down. He tried to talk again, and they booed him down. He asked them to please let him finish, and they booed again. He said, "Sit down and listen to me." The crowd went wild with heat. As soon as he tried to say anything, the crowd went nuts. They finally started chanting, "You suck."

Swagger finally pushed through with the promo. He said his dad told him at two, "Someday son, you will be a world champion." He said he was six inches taller than anyone in his fist glade class. He said he won the NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick contest at 12, the same year he earned Eagle Scout. The crowd was still white hot for him. He said he scored a 1510 on his SAT when he was 16. He said he went to Oklahoma on a full ride and graduated Magnum Cum Laude in three years. He said he was a two time All American.

He said but since he was pouring his heart out, he wanted us to know that his crown achievement was when he won the World Heavyweight Championship. He said after his win, he sat down with his daddy again, and he said, "I told you so." Swagger said he was now telling everyone that he was the champion, and he would be champion until he retires. He started to say something else, and Teddy Long'a music cut him off. He said they had heard enough from Swagger, and said the world wanted to know who was the number one contender who would face Swagger at Over the Limit.

Show's music hit and he came to the ramp to a huge pop. Show got in the ring and had said the crowd should golf clap for Swagger's accomplishments. He said the doctor said "Oh my God, so you see the size of him?" when he was born. He said Swagger was a lot of things, but he wasn't the world's largest athlete. Show listed Swagger's accomplishments. Show said there was only one thing Swagger needed to add to his resume, early retirement. Show knocked Swagger out, and celebrated in the ring to end the show…

Shore’s Slant: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I hate Big Show as a funny face singles wrestler. I just hate his gimmick, and I hate somebody like Swagger getting bogged down by Show's limited move set. I have always said Show can entertain for seven minutes or so, but after that, he's done. And title matches on PPVs should not be seven minutes…or shitty. But it looks like those are our only two choices. Lovely. I'll have more to say tomorrow on the hitlist. Thanks for reading and I will see you then.
