4/20 Twilling's WWE NXT Live Coverage: Chris Jericho vs. Heath Slater, who will win the latest all rookie competition? Will Daniel Bryan win a match?
Apr 20, 2010 - 09:00 PM

The WWE Smackdown results are now available on the main page.

WWE NXT on the Syfy Network
Taped earlier tonight from Uncasville, Conn.

[Q1] The opening video aired. Michael Cole and Josh Mathews welcomed us to the show. Matt Striker introduced the rookies, all of whom were already in the ring. Striker introduced tonight's competition. If you watched "American Gladiators," this is like their joust competition.

In case you haven't seen it, each man stands on a pedestal and they have jousting sticks. The object is to knock the other person off. Heath Slater defeated David Otunga. Skip Sheffield beat Wade Barrett, although they both fell off at about the same time.

Daniel Bryan beat Michael Tarver after Tarver just threw his stick down and lost on purpose. Darren Young beat Justin Gabriel pretty quickly. The announcers hyped tonight's main event of Chris Jericho vs. Heath Slater... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Slater got the main event against Kane a couple of weeks back too. I wonder if they are trying to find something in him. I liked the jousting competition because I'm guessing it was legit. I wonder if Tarver's behavior is shoot or not. He's more annoying than heat seeking.

A video package hyping John Cena vs. Batista at Extreme Rules was shown...

[Q2] The announcers ran down the card. Cena vs. Batista. Mysterio vs. Punk. Edge vs. Jericho. Triple H vs. Sheamus. Swagger vs. Orton. I'm wondering if they are going to add something because that is only five matches...

Mathews introduced a Wade Barrett video package. Miz, Christian, Regal, Carlito, and Chris Jericho all gave Barrett massive praise. Jericho referred to Barrett as a perfect protege...

Jericho vs. Slater was hyped for later in the show... [C]

1. Justin Gabriel (with Matt Hardy) defeated David Otunga (with R-Truth) in 4:09. Gabriel impressed early with armdrags and a dropkick, while Otunga relied on his brute power. Otunga scored a two count after a reverse neck breaker.

Gabriel hit a somersault senton splash onto Otunga on the floor. Good thing Otunga stepped up to take the move because Justin would have broken his neck. Gabriel hit a sunset slip over the top rope. Otunga reached out for Truth's hands, but Truth said no. Gabriel scored the victory...

Twill's Two Cents: Gabriel looks pretty polished in addition to his impressive high flying moves. Otunga is a powerful guy and is improving, but still has a long ways to go in the ring. I like the side story with the imploding relationship between Otunga and Truth.

The announcers hyped the semi-finals of the jousting competition... [C]

[Q3] Sheffield dominated Slater in the next round of the jousting competition to advance to the finals. Young defeated Bryan as Michael Cole berated him and called him a loser...

Carlito and Michael Tarver made their way out to the ring. Tarver cut a promo. "If silence is golden, my words are invaluable." He said he did not come to dance on a balloon like a monkey. He said he was a bulldog off of his leash. He issued an open challenge for any rookie or pro to stop him...

Twill's Two Cent: How many different types of dog is this guy? A bulldog off of his leash isn't exactly a threat. Bulldogs make very nice pets and are really friendly.

Skip Sheffield came out. He said Tarver needed to "turn his upper lip south and shut his mouth." He said he would take the challenge and even though William Regal was not there, he would make him proud...

C.M. Punk's music hit. Punk said Darren Young was also looking for competition. He showed footage of Young defeating Luke Gallows last week. Punk said Young was in the finals of the "stick fighting thing" and made it a triple threat match...

2. Darren Young defeated Skip Sheffield and Michael Tarver (with Carlito) in a triple threat match in 7:35.. Sheffield and Tarver looked to double team Young, but Young quickly disposed of both men to the floor... [C]

By the way, does anyone else think the new chicken sandwich at KFC, the one where the pieces of chicken are the buns, looks nasty? I like my fast food but damn, I would never order that thing...

[Q4] Sheffield and Tarver both beat the crap out of Young. They argued over who would pin him. Tarver hit a series of punches and although his dad sparred with Mike Tyson, his punches were sloppy.

Young threw Sheffield to the floor and went to the top rope. Gallows pushed him off into the ring. Young came back though and hit a full nelson flipping suplex on Tarver for the win...

After the match, Young and Gallows stared each other down from afar...

Twill's Two Cents: Decent triple threat match and with Young winning, a nice storyline brewing within the SES. I really don't see much in either Sheffield or Tarver. Sheffield just seems bland and Tarver just doesn't bring much to the table.

A Heath Slater video aired. The face pros talked him up and the heels tore him down a little bit, although Miz and Jericho did make a couple of positive comments. The announcers hyped the main event and the jousting finals... [C]

Footage was shown of Christian beating Wade Barrett last week with Heath Slater's help...

Matt Striker introduced the finals of the "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em" rookie challenge. The winner gets a feature on WWE.com. Both men went down again and apparently, Young fell first because the win was given to Sheffield. The replay showed both men touched down at the same time. As a result, Striker said there would be a rematch...

[Overrun] The rematch provided no doubt. Sheffield kicked his ass the second time around. Sheffield quoted Keanu Reeves from the movie "Hardball" and said "The most important thing is showing up." ...

Twill's Two Cents: Did anyone actually see that movie? By the way, didn't Wade Barrett win his own theme music last week? Glad to see they followed through on that. Nice that they are starting the main event in the overrun.

3. Heath Slater defeated Chris Jericho (with Wade Barrett) in 3:07. Jericho dominated the early portion of the match. He missed a lionsault and Slater hit a few moves, much to the delight of four people. Slater nearly won the match with a reverse neckbreaker. Jericho set up Slater for the Walls, but Slater rolled him up with a small package for the win...

After the match, Jericho screamed at the referee and threw one of his old school WCW fits where he threw equipment around everywhere. He screamed "You're stupid" into the face of the referee as the show went off the air...

Twill's Two Cents: Wow, I was not expecting that. Give credit to Jericho here. Would Triple H, John Cena, or The Undertaker ever even appear on NXT, much less lose to one of the rookies clean? Jericho after the match was hilarious. "You're stupid!" I'm still laughing at that.
