3/5 Hermanstyne's WWE Smackdown Live Coverage: Drew McIntyre vs. Matt Hardy in a MITB qualifier, Triple threat match for the unified tag team titles where the winner gets a title shot at Wrestlemania, Edge vs. Big Show
Mar 5, 2010 - 07:00 PM |
WWE Friday Night Smackdown on MyNetworkTV
Taped in Wichita, KS
[Q1] The show started with video of the Jericho/Edge feud and the opening montage was shown. The main event of the night is Edge vs. Big Show and Edge came out to a nice pop. Video was shown of Edge defeating The Miz last week. Edge said that WM is 23 days away and he is concerned about Jericho. He said week after week, Jericho has told him the same thing over and over again but the same thing happens over and over. Edge says that Jericho keeps getting speared and the same thing will keep happening again. He kept saying spear and Big Show came out to interrupt him.
Edge said wow, what a depressing surprise. He talked about Miz getting speared and said Show will get speared also. Show said he is not the only reason because he will see who will become number one contender for the unified tag team titles. He put himself over and said he wanted to get his hands on him. Edge asked if he was gonna eat him. Show said he eats pieces of crap like him and Edge interrupted and said no wonder why he eats crap and said Show had halitosis.
Edge teased a spear and asked Show where you afraid that you were gonna get speared? Show went after him and got tossed outside of the ring.
Mind of Marv: The segment was OK, but we all know Edge could be better. Additionally, Show botched saying united instead of unified…so he screwed up there. But overall, nice build to the main event.
Teddy Long and Drew McIntyre were backstage and Drew asked Long to change the decision for his loss and by the order of Vince, Drew’s loss will be expunged. Long said that Drew will face Matt Hardy and the match is next. Drew offered a handshake and Long walked off. [C]
Mind of Marv: So because Drew is Vince’s puppet, he could reverse clean losses? Only in wrestling can this be done, sigh.
[Q2] The crowd shot proved that Drew gets Eric Escobar heat, that’s sad as hell. Video was shown Drew losing clean to Kane last week and him having a tantrum towards Matt Striker. Matt’s rookie, Justin Gabriel came to the ring with him and highlights were shown of Gabriel doing a 450 splash to win his match on NXT.
1. Matt Hardy (w/ Justin Gabriel) defeated Drew McIntyre in a MITB qualifier in 8:00. Both men locked up and Drew pointed at the briefcase. Drew hit a shoulderblock for a one count and Matt countered with hiptosses. Drew hit a headbutt and Matt countered with a clothesline to Drew. Drew worked on Matt outside of the ring. [C]
The show returned with Drew working on Matt’s ribs and back for multiple pinfalls. Drew applied an submission to Matt and Matt countered with boot to Drew’s mouth. Drew went for an superplex, but Matt pushed him off and hit an elbow to Drew’s head. Matt went for the Twist of Fate but Drew tried to counter with the Future Shock but Matt broke out. Drew went for a cover and Matt countered with a rollup for the win.
Mind of Marv: Good but not great match. Drew really needs some kind of heat because the crowd could really care less. I won’t be surprised if they job him out and he loses that IC title strap sometime soon.
Post match, Drew looked at the WM26 sign and started to snap at Striker again by ripping the announcers cover and had a tantrum.
[Q3] Backstage, John Morrison was talking to Slam Master J about his DVD. Truth and Dave Otunga came in and Truth said they were slipping last week and both of them missed opportunities to be in WM. They both agreed that this were their last chance to be in Mania. Truth and Morrison were discussing tag team names and Truth said that they have one name that they could agree on, unified tag team champions. Morrison said that’s what’s up. Mysterio vs. Gallows is later tonight. [C]
2. Shelton Benjamin pinned Dolph Ziggler in 4:35. Shelton hit a shoulderblock to Dolph and Dolph talked smack just to get punched. Dolph applied a sleeper but Shelton countered a chinbreaker. Dolph went for a cover after a failed splash attempt by Shelton for a nearfall. Dolph went on a stomp fest and hit a sick dropkick on Shelton for a nearfall. Dolph applied a modified body scissors and Shelton countered out. Dolph went for another cover for a nearfall. Dolph hit a jumping elbow for a nearfall. Dolph Irished whipped Shelton and Shelton hit a sick backbreaker to Dolph.
Shelton got back on offense with a belly to back suplex for a nearfall. Dolph tripped Shelton and applied to sleeper again. Dolph went for the Zig Zag but Shelton countered a sling to the top rope and he hit Paydirt to end the match. [C]
Mind of Marv: I would actually want to see these guys go ten minutes because it has potential to be a good midcard feud. Both guys could work and this was a quality match.
[Q4] The unified tag team title number one contenders match was hyped for later tonight. Jimmy Wang Yang got his moment of silence before Ezekiel Jackson made his entrance.
3. Ezekiel Jackson squashed Jimmy Wang Yang in 1:27. Zeke throws, shoulderblocks, stomped, tosses Yang in the corner. Yang got some kind of offense in but gets slapped with the Book of Ezekiel (which is the name of his finisher).
Mind of Marv: Basic squash, enough said.
Backstage, Rey Mysterio gave his daughter a toy and Tiffany was introduced. The father/daughter moment was aired and Tiffany became the babysitter…zzzz.[C]
The SES came out and Punk talked about Mysterio’s popularity and talked about how parents spend money on their super hero. He started to rip on a little boy and said Mysterio was the average neglectful parent. He said people cheered Mysterio coward ways because they are all cowards. He talked about Mysterio being scared and taking cheap shots. He said he put his hands on Gallows and told Gallows that he does not forgive Mysterio. He wants Rey to pay and told him that he is fighting for the SES.
[Q5] Mysterio got the pop from the kiddies…
4. Rey Mysterio beat Luke Gallows in 11:15. Gallows got the early advantage with the beat down of Mysterio but Rey countered with a low drop kick. Rey hit a spinning leg lock, but Gallows hit a shoulder block to Rey. The Black John Cena, Darren Young (Punk’s rookie) was observing backstage. Meanwhile, Gallows beat on Rey with knees to Rey’s back. Rey tricked Gallows and he flew out of the ring. Punk whispered something in Gallows ear. [C]
The show returned with Gallows dominating with blows and he threw Mysterio into the ringpost. Gallows threw Rey into the ring and pounded on him in the corner. Gallows Irish whipped him and hit a belly to belly suplex for a nearfall. Gallows headbutted Rey in the kidneys and Rey battled out with blows but Gallows countered with a fallaway slam for a nearfall. Gallows applied an Bearhug to Rey and Rey got out. Gallows hit a battering ram to Rey and went for it again but Rey hit a springboard to Gallows for a nearfall.
Gallows hit a clothesline on his knees for a nearfall. Rey hit a Codebreaker type move to Gallows and went to the top rope but Gallows caught him with an uppercut for a nearfall. Rey went a DDT but he applied a Feder Lock submission but Gallows broke out. Rey went for the 619, but the SES tried to interfere and Rey reversed a rollup on Gallows for the win.
Mind of Marv: This was another good match to showcase another big man in Gallows. WWE has a lot of big men that can work but they just do absolutely nothing with them. If we can see Serena wrestle, then this stable maybe an unstoppable force. Does anyone smell, a babyface Hart Dynasty vs. the SES in the future??
Backstage, Jericho and Big Show was chatting. Jericho put Show over and talked about him destroying Edge. He said he owed it to him and Show said he is not doing it for Jericho, but he is doing it for him. Jericho smiled and said get ‘em, Show. [Q6][C]
The Raw Rebound was shown and Morrison and Truth made their entrance. Video was shown of Otunga and Truth having their bitch fight in the back. The Harts came out to their average heat and Striker compared Cryme Tyme to Method Man and Redman…that was a slap in the face, ugh.
5. John Morrison and R-Truth beat Cryme Tyme and The Hart Dynasty in a Triple Threat to earn a Unified Tag Title shot at WrestleMania 26 in 8:20. Shad and Morrison started the match. Morrison went for the Chuck Kick but Shad hit a spinebuster to Morrison. [C]
[Q7] The show returned with JTG and Morrison in the ring. Strikers called Cryme Tyme Eric B. and Rakim…just stop it with the comparison of tools to old school rappers, please. DH got tagged in and hit three belly to belly suplexes to Morrison for a nearfall. DH hit a shoulerblock to Morrison and they butt heads. Truth got in the match and wored on Kidd with his offense and hit a superkick to Kidd. DH and Shad beat on each other and Morrison knocked all the guys about except Kidd and Truth. Kidd hit a missle dropkick for a nearfall.
Truth hit the Lie Detector to Kidd for the win…
Mind of Marv: Throwaway triple threat match which buried two established tag teams. I understand that they want to get Morrison and Truth involved, but they should have been in MITB instead of this match. Why the hell aren’t the Harts getting some kind of push?
Post match, Morrison showed his break dancing skills and Truth did a split…[C]
Backstage, McCool thanked Vickie for the women’s title and they talked shit about Mickie. They said Vickie was flawless and LayCool gave Vickie a Simply Flawless shirt and Beth stepped up and asked about getting a title shot. Vickie said that Beth won’t be getting a title shot anytime soon and said don’t cross her…
Mind of Marv: Is this an attempt to make Beth a babyface or make her look weak and inferior to Vickie and LayCool? I’m confused here.
[Q8] The WM26 card was ran down and the Big Show came out to no heat…tough crowd. He will face Edge, next…[C]
6. Edge defeated the Big Show in 5:45. Edge started with some punches but Show hit some headbutts and worked on Edge in the corner with punches to the midsection. Show grabbed by the head and tries to pull him in the ring, but Edge countered. Show hit a chop to Edge and started to taunt him. Edge pushed Show into the ringpost and hit some strikes bit Show countered with a headbutt and a scoop slam. Show put all hit weight on Edge on the ropes and punched him in the gut. Show hit another headbutt and applied an headlock to Edge.
Edge hit a chinbreaker to Show but Show hit another scoop slam to Edge. Show went to the top rope to splash on Edge, but Edge moved. Edge gave a big boot and went for a DDT but missed hit. He made Show hit his head in the corner and botched a DDT. Show went for a chokeslam but Edge countered into a terrible DDT and he speared Show for the win.
Post match, Jericho tried to knock Edge out but got speared for the 10,099th time. Edge said in case you missed it, Jericho got speared, speared, speared…
Mind of Marv: The Big Slow really knows how to kill a main event. This was a boring to below average match, but the Jericho and Edge build up is fine with me. Overall, this show gets a B- because it was OK, but nothing noteworthy because the tag team title match just seems really throwaway. Miz and Morrison will relive their feud but in order for this to happen, they need to be on the same brand.
Chris Shore will have the Hit List available in the morning. Shoot me some emails at mr.hermanstyne@gmail.com and I will debate or chat about any sports related topics including the Monday Night Wars Part 2 that begins on Monday, fantasy baseball advice and why the Chicago Bears are the big winners in the first day of NFL free agent signings.
