Jan 29, 2010 - 07:00 PM

Smackdown on MyNetwork TV
Taped on 1/26/10 in Cincinnati, Oh.

[Q1]A video package hyped DX vs. The Straight Edge Society…DX’s music hit, and they made their entrance as Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcomed us to Smackdown. Before they could get their shtick started, Rey Mysterio’s music hit and he came to the ring. Rey got right in front of HBK and said Shawn didn’t respect him. He said all he’s heard from Shawn is how he will win the Rumble and go on to face Taker at Mania.

Shawn said that’s exactly what he thought, and asked Rey what he was doing getting in his face. Triple H said Rey came out with all kinds of bass in his voice looking for a fight, but Hornswoggle didn’t make the trip. Rey said he was going to do something that neither of them could do at Mania, he was going to beat Taker. Shawn asked him what would happen if he Rey didn’t make the Rumble. Rey returned the threat and challenged HBK to a match.

CM Punk’s music hit and he came out with Gallows and Serena. He said Rey must be high because the Straight Edge Society would become the first straight edge tag team champions. Hunter said he was happy to know Punk was straight, but the people didn’t care about his lifestyle. He said he didn’t understand it. He said Punk didn’t smoke, drink, or do drugs. He said neither did he, but he didn’t look like he had been on a crack binge with Amy Winehouse. He said Punk should shave the squirrel off his chin, and either Lobotomy Man or Brittany Spears had a bad case of the swamp butt.

Teddy Long’s music hit and he came to the ramp. He said the Straight Edge Society would not get its title shot. Instead, Rey would face HBK for the very first time. He said since Punk expected to be in a match, he would face Triple H next. Triple H smiled in the ring as Punk continued to yell at Long…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Wow. Rey was the best I’ve heard him in a while. Fun opening segment. I would have liked Punk and Gallows to get the win tonight, but they want to drag this out for a little but longer guess. I’m interested to see how this plays out over the next few weeks with Punk getting screwed out of the title shot. And good for Serena to get the gig on the main roster.

[Q2]The WWE Rewind video was Serena getting her head shaved last week…

1. Triple H defeated CM Punk (W/The Straight Edge Society) by disqualification at 12:01. Striker told us Hunter told Shawn he would do this himself, and Shawn had left ringside. Hunter started out with a quick headlock. Punk broke dirty in the corner, beating Hunter down. Hunter no sold a drop toe hold, and reversed a whip into a Pedigree attempt. Punk rolled to the floor, but Hunter pulled him back in by his hair as Gallows tried to pull Punk to safety. Hunter tossed Punk in the ring and glared at Gallows. He turned around and Punk hit a springboard drop kick to take control…[C]

Back at 5:35, Punk hit a snapmare and kick to the back for two, and then locked on a figure four head lock. A video showed Hunter being slammed into the announce table during the break. Hunter tried to come back, but Punk hit a spinning heel kick for two. Hunter reversed a suplex, but Punk hit a roundhouse kick for two and went back to the figure four headlock. Hunter made the ropes and then a surprise spinebuster to take control.

Hunter worked his offense. He hit the face buster, and then beat Punk down in the corner. He hit the Harley Race knee for two and teased the Pedigree again. Punk back dropped out, and then the knee in the corner. He tried for the bulldog, but they botched a Flair kneebuster before Hunter locked on a figure four. Hunter grabbed the rope for leverage, and Serena got in the ring. The ref chased her out, allowing Gallows to punch Hunter. Punk went for GTS, but Hunter slipped out and hooked for the Pedigree. Serena jumped in the ring and onto Hunter’s back to cause the DQ.

Post match, the Society beat Hunter down. Gallows got the clippers and handed them to Punk. They started to shave Hunter’s head, but HBK made the save. They clotheslined Gallows over the top and turned on Punk. Punk put Serena between them and DX backed down. He left the ring and HBK teased Superkicking Serena, but she slipped out too…

[Q3]The announce team hyped the HBK/Mysterio match and the IC match is a no DQ match…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Pretty good match. I hate when they give away big matches, only to have a no finish, but I guess it beats having a shitty match with a finish I guess. I will say I am even more excited about this continuing as a feud though. DX and the SES could be hot.

Back from commercial, Chris Jericho made his ring entrance. A video package recapped his match with McIntyre vs. R-Truth and Morrison last week. R-Truth made his lame ass entrance. Even Striker sang along. Dear God…

2. R-Truth defeated Chris Jericho at 8:14. Jericho took quick control and slapped on a headlock. Truth whipped out and hit a arm drag and dropkick before spilling Jericho to the floor. Truth went for a plancha, but Jericho pushed him away. Both men recovered into the break…[C]

Back at 4:25, Jericho kicked Truth in the ring. He hit a front suplex onto the top rope for two. Striker said quick guys like Jericho, HBK, and Triple H had the advantage.

Shore’s Slant: Triple H is a quick guy? Color me surprised.

[Q4]Jericho slapped on an abdominal stretch, but Truth hip tossed out. Truth went on offense and hit a flying head scissors and heel kick for two. Jericho reversed a whip to the corner, but Truth did his split duck and tried for a kick. Jericho tried for Walls of Jericho, but Truth rolled through and hooked an inside cradle for two. Jericho tried for a Code Breaker, but Truth held the ropes. Jericho hit the mat, and Truth hooked a jackknife roll up for the win…

The announce team setup a video that recapped the Mysterio/Undertaker/Batista angle. Backstage, Josh Matthews interviewed Batista. Batista said he would win the Rumble and go on to regain what was rightfully his, the World Heavyweight Championship. Batista said he would hurt anyone who got in his way, including Triple H, HBK, or John Cena…John Morrison was shown heading towards the ring…[C]

Shore’s Slant: A good match that I have mixed feelings about. I like how Jericho has no problem putting new guys over, and this loss won’t affect his status in the least. I could pin him with the finger poke of doom and he would still have credibility. But I don’t know that Truth is the right guy to be using Jericho on. He needs to be making the next main event face for Smackdown since Jeff Hardy is obviously not coming back. And no, Truth is not that face. Not yet at least. Still, a good showing in the ring. Not a classic, but nice for TV.

Back from commercial, John Morrison made his ring entrance. Morrison said he wasn’t Drew McIntyre. He said he wasn’t handpicked by the brass and “Pedigreed into the top spot.” Wow. He said Drew dropped the title to chest bump Sheamus. He said Drew didn’t think the rules applied to him. He said tonight, there were no rules, and tonight, he would win the IC back. Drew McIntyre made his ring entrance…

3. Drew McIntyre defeated John Morrison in a no disqualification match to retain the Intercontinental Championship at 11:34. Morrison took quick control with a kick. He backed Drew into a corner, but did not break. Drew pushed out and hit a chinbuster. Morrison returned with a heel kick for two. Morrison tossed Drew to the floor and the crowd chanted, “We want tables.” Morrison went to get Drew, but Drew had a kendo stick and whacked Mr. Abs in his best assets. He rolled Morrison back in, and covered for two.

[Q5]McIntyre hooked in an arm bar. Morrison stood and Drew whipped him to the corner. Morrison tried to jump up, but Drew kicked him in the abs. Morrison fought back and Drew rolled to the floor. He got the title and went to leave. Morrison kicked him into the railing and rolled him back in the ring. Drew was still holding the title belt. He took a swing at Morrison. Morrison ducked, but Drew kicked him in the knee and then stomped him flat. He held the belt up as the show went to commercial…[C]

Back at 7:15, Drew worked the arm. Morrison made his feet and tried to fight back. Drew setup for his DDT, but Morrison escaped and pushed him into the corner. He tried for the Flying Chuck, but McIntyre pushed him over the rope. McIntyre went to the floor and picked up the stairs. He threw them at Morrison, but Morrison ducked. Drew clotheslined him into the fans and they battled. Morrison got the best and clotheslined Drew back to the ringside. He hit a running clothesline while diving over the rail. The crowd popped big.

Morrison saw the kendo stick and hit Drew in the abs and back. McIntyre hit a thumb to the eye, and got the kendo stick. He charged at Morrison, but Morrison hip tossed him onto the stairs. Morrison rolled him in the ring and covered for two. Morrison went for Starship Pain, but Drew got the knees up. McIntyre hit his finisher—Striker called it Future Shock I think—for the win…The announce team hyped the main event…[C]

Shore’s Slant: Wow, that was hot. A very nice showing by both men who have wrestled enough times now that they work very well together. I think Morrison/Ziggler was better, but only barely. I wonder if this was the blow off, and if so, what’s next for both men after the Rumble. The Triple H shot in the prematch promo was amazing. I can’t believe they got away with it.

[Q6]Back from commercial, Michelle McCool’s music hit and she made her ring entrance alone. The announce team hyped her match with Mickie James at the Royal Rumble. McCool said she did everyone a favor last week. She said she sent Piggie James back to the farm where she belongs. She pointed to the screen, and a video recapped the cake and punch attack on last week’s show. Extra footage was shown of Mickie crying as she left the ring. McCool said that little piggy cried whee, whee, whee, whee, all the way home. She said that meant we wouldn’t see her defend the title at the Rumble.

McCool said she was a fighting champion, and challenged the locker room for anyone to come out and face her for the title. Mickie James’s music hit, and Layla came out in a fat suit and pig nose, wearing some ring attire like Mickie does. She snorted at McCool and said she would get her title shot. The joke went on to long and the ref called for the bell…

4. Michelle McCool defeated Piggie James at 0:53. Piggie missed a corner splash, and McCool rolled up for the win. Post match, Piggie James ate as she and McCool left ringside…The announce team hyped the main event…[C]

Shore’s Slant: WTF was that? Lame.

[Q7]Back from commercial, the Royal Rumble hype video aired…The announce team ran down the Rumble card…Shawn Michaeks was shown heading towards the ring. Batista walked up and said he didn’t care about Michaels obsession with Taker, he better stay out of his way. Shawn said or what. Batista started to do something, but Hunter walked up. Shawn left and Hunter asked Batista if he had anything to say. Batista walked away…Rey Mysterio made his ring entrance…[C]

Shore’s Slant: HBK and Rey get a little under 20 minutes? Win!

Back from commercial, HBK made his normal entrance.

5. Shawn Michaels apparently defeated Rey Mysterio by disqualification at 15:51. Michaels hooked a head lock to start. Rey escaped, and Michaels hit a series of knife edge chops. Both men ran the ropes. It ended when Rey hit a flying head scissors into a 619 setup. Michaels escaped to the floor and collected his thoughts. Michaels entered the ring and they traded blows in the corner. HBK hit another chop and Rey rolled to the floor. Shawn went and got him, tossing him back in the ring.

Rey grabbed the ropes on a whip. HBK charged and Rey hit a drop toe hold into a 619 setup. Rey hit the ropes and Shawn tried for Sweet Chin Music. Rey ducked and grabbed the ropes again. He kicked Michaels in the mouth, and then leg scissors tossed them both over the top rope. Both men recovered into the break…

[Q8][C]Back at 7:49, Rey worked the leg of HBK. Shawn chopped back, and Rey whipped him. Shawn reversed into a swinging neck breaker. Shawn whipped Rey to the corner. Rey stopped, and hit a drop toe hold into the corner. He went to the top, but Shawn swept the leg, tying Rey in the Tree of Woe. Shawn stood Rey. Rey tried for a drop kick, but Shawn pushed him down and locked in a modified figure four. Rey made the ropes, and then hit an insaguri kick.

Both men recovered and ran the ropes. Michaels hit the flying forearm. He kipped up, and Rey hit a flying head scissors and West Coast Pop for two. Rey hit a springboard that Shawn reversed into a front atomic drop. Rey hit another kick and went for a splash. Michaels got the legs up. He followed with the elbow, and called for Sweet Chin Music. Rey stood and hit a spinning heel kick that dropped Michaels on the ropes. Rey hit 619, and Michaels oversold. Rey went to the top for the West Coast Pop, and Shawn Michaels Superkicked him out of the air.

Michaels staggered to hit feet, and Batista ran in out of nowhere. He hit a spear on Michaels, causing the DQ. He hit a spinebuster on Rey and turned back to HBK. He set him up for the Batista Bomb. Hunter’s music hit and he ran to the ring. Batista pushed Michaels away. Hunter slid in the ring and they traded blows. Hunter got the better, and hit a spinebuster on Batista. He then clotheslined both of them over the top rope. HBK and Rey tried to stand. Hells Bells rang, and the lights went off. The lights came on, and Taker was in the ring. He grabbed Shawn with his right hand, and Rey with his left. After choking them forever, he chokeslammed both to end the show…

Shore’s Slant: Wow, just wow. Rey Mysterio, when put with a guy like Jericho ro Michaels, can flat put on a show. I can only imagine how good this could have been on PPV. Excellent way to close the show and tease us for the Rumble. I’ll have more to say tomorrow in the hitlist, and be sure to check out my Royal Rumble predictions this Sunday. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you then.
