2/22 WWE Smackdown: Rey Mysterio updates injury status, Money in the Bank qualifier

Taped Feb. 19 in San Diego, Calif.
[Q1] A video recapped Undertaker's Elimination Chamber win at No Way Out... The opening montage aired... Edge walked to the ring with Zach Ryder and Curt Hawkins, while Michael Cole and Jonathan Coachman introduced the show. Edge said he’s not afraid to face the Undertaker at WrestleMania. Rather, he sees it as an opportunity to cement his legacy. He noted that Taker is 15-0 at WrestleMania. “Just like me,” Edge said. “Something has to give. And beating Undertaker at WrestleMania is the equivalent of winning a World Hvt. Championship. In case you haven’t noticed, folks, that’s what I do.”
Edge had the cameraman zoom in on his face. “I will not fall,” he said. “This year it all ends.” The lights went out briefly. When they came back on, Taker was standing in the ring with his hand wrapped around Edge’s throat. He set him up for a chokeslam, but Hawkins and Ryder saved him. Taker beat up the Edgeheads while Edge fled to ringside... [C]
Powell’s POV: Good promo by Edge. Yep, we’re going streaking. Technically, Edge lost at WrestleMania last year because he was involved in the Money in the Bank ladder match that Mr. Kennedy won.
[Q2] 1. Shelton Benjamin defeated Jimmy Wang Yang at 6:51 in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. At 3:30, Benjamin caught Yang on the top rope and performed a release German suplex to the mat. The announcers put it over strong and replayed the move twice. Late in the match, Yang missed a moonsault but landed on his feet. Shelton immediately hit his finisher for the win. Coach deemed him the favorite to win the Money in the Bank match... [C]
[Q3] Backstage, Maryse approached Teddy Long and asked for five minutes alone... Cole said Hornswoggle is suffering from swelling of the brain and cerebral hemorrhaging...
2. Jesse and Festus beat Deuce and Domino (w/Cherry) at 5:15. The usual Jesse and Festus match. Festus snaps when the bell rings. Jesse sells a lot. Makes the tag to Festus. Festus cleans house. Festus picks up Jesse and drops him on one of his opponent’s for the win. Festus chills out when the bell rings again. Only this time, Jesse suffered a bloody nose sometime in the middle of all that...
Highlights aired of the Floyd Mayweather and Big Show angle... [C]
Powell’s POV: It could be nothing, but I noticed that you couldn’t hear the fans booing Mayweather during any of his audio clips. I wonder if they edited the footage that way because they still hope to make him the babyface.
A video documented the South American tour. “They even cheered me,” Matt Striker cracked. Cool footage...
[Q4] 3. Big Daddy V (w/Matt Striker) beat Shannon Moore at 3:08. V finished him off with an elbow drop... Cole hyped Batista vs. MVP for after the break... [C] A pre-taped promo with MVP aired during his ring entrance. He said his back was still killing him from the Elimination Chamber, but vowed that Batista would never beat him again...
4. Batista defeated MVP in a non-title match at 7:41. Batista came to the ring with bandages on his forehead to sell his EC injuries. Cole said MVP is “way too smart to put the title on the line tonight.” Does that mean he decides when he defends his title? MVP sold his back injury early on.
[Q5] MVP, while lying on his back, kicked Batista off him and out of the ring. At 6:00, Batista set up MVP for the Batista Bomb, but he slipped out of it and bolted to ringside. Batista went after him, but MVP grabbed his head and clotheslined him with the top rope. MVP followed up in the ring with a kick to the head. He went for the Playmaker, but Batista fought him off and his three straight spinebusters. Batista followed up with the Batista Bomb and scored the pin... [C]
Powell’s POV: Does MVP ever defend his U.S. Title? The strap wasn’t on the line when he fought Ric Flair at the Royal Rumble and he’s fought Batista in non-title matches over the last two weeks. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this match more than the match they had last week. They had a lot more time to fill last week and there were definitely some slow spots.
Cole and Coach introduced footage of JBL’s attack on Hornswoggle at Raw. Coach called it a disgusting act by Mr. McMahon... [C]
Powell’s POV: Since when does Coach speak out against anything Vince’s character does?...
[Q6] A shot aired of Erik Morales sitting in the crowd. Cole pondered what Morales thinks of Mayweather’s upcoming match with Big Show. Coach assumed he’d root for Mayweather because they’re both boxers...
5. Kane beat The Great Khali at 3:08. Before the match, Cole said Runjin SIngh had his kneecaps “shattered in three different places.” That’s a lot of shattering. At 2:50, Khali locked in the vice grip. Kane pushed off on the ropes and landed on Khali, who held onto the vice grip. However, his shoulders were on the mat and the referee counted them down for the pin. Khali didn’t let go. “I don’t think he understands,” Coach said. Of course he doesn’t. He lost his translator. Ugh.
Powell’s POV: Some live crowds get excited by monster vs. giant matches. This was not one of them. The crowd was really flat until the finish.
The announcers hyped the Edge vs. Undertaker match for WrestleMania 24... A video recapped all of Taker’s WrestleMania victories... [C] Cole congratulated Ric Flair for being named a member of the 2008 Hall of Fame class...
[Q7] 5. Chuck Palumbo squashed Matt Jackson in 2:00. A shot aired of Michelle McCool watching the match on a backstage monitor. A total squash. Chuck could have pinned Jackson, but he pulled him up. He finally finished him off with the Full Throttle. Michelle wasn’t very happy with it backstage...
A shot aired of Rey Mysterio putting a mask over his mask backstage... [C]
The hometown crowd popped huge for Rey’s entrance. He gave the extra mask to his daughter, who was sitting near the guardrail. Once in the ring, Rey said he had some bad news. “I saw the doctors and they told me that unfortunately my biceps on my right arm is completely torn.” He put the mic down, removed the protective wrap, and showed the bruising to the camera. He said he needs to have surgery. He said he has to get it done this weekend, meaning he wouldn’t be able to be part of WrestleMania. Rey spoke a few sentences in Spanish and said, “It’s killing me.” He said that if this is the last time he gets in the ring until he’s healed, what better place for it to be than in his hometown.
Teddy wheeled Vickie Guerrero onto the stage. “Rey, I know you’re hurt, but I don’t give a damn,” she said. Teddy wheeled Vickie to ringside until she put her hand up and motioned for him to stop. Video footage aired on the big screen of the proposal angle from last week. Vickie claimed Rey intentionally landed on her last week. She told him to shut up when she’s talking to him. “I’m not going to apologize for what I’m going to do to you,” she said. She said he had no choice but to compete. Rey pleaded with her, but she told him to shut up and called for a referee. She introduced Chavo Guerrero as Rey’s opponent...
Powell’s POV: Vickie was really good here. She played the bitch role well. This was easily her best performance and the live crowd ate it up. As we stated earlier this week, Rey’s surgery was actually scheduled for today even though Rey said otherwise for television purposes.
[Q8] 6. Rey Mysterio defeated Chavo Guerrero at 8:50 in a non-title match. Chavo slammed Rey into the mat and he clutched his bad arm. [C] After the break, Chavo worked over Rey’s injured right arm. He sold the injury throughout the match. Later, Chavo missed the frogsplash. Rey rolled him up and scored the pin. Vickie wasn’t pleased with the outcome. She glared at Rey and grabbed her neck in pain (to sell the angle from last week).
Vickie ordered the production crew to stop Rey’s music. “You hurt me, so now, Rey, it’s my turn to hurt you.” Vickie flashed a sinister smile and then Big Show’s music played. Big Show walked to the ring in his wrestling gear (same old gear) and attacked Mysterio. He removed the protective wrap from his arm and then stepped on it while Rey screamed in pain. Show picked up Rey by the throat, walked around the ring for a few seconds, and chokeslammed him. The announcers were silent while Show stared into the camera and made a menacing face to close the show...
Powell’s POV: Mysterio did a good job of selling his arm injury throughout the match by clutching it after every move. Then again, maybe he wasn’t selling. Either way, gutty performance by Mysterio to work two matches after suffering a complete tear of his biceps. This couldn’t have come at a worse time because he was slated for a big match (and payoff) at WrestleMania and his feud with Vickie was just getting fun. The rest of the show was very forgettable. It’s amazing that WWE television was so bland following the hot No Way Out pay-per-view.
