6/20 Twilling's WWE Fatal Four Way PPV report: John Cena vs. Sheamus vs. Edge vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship, Jack Swagger vs. Rey Mysterio vs. C.M. Punk vs. Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship
Jun 20, 2010 - 10:00 PM

By Rich Twilling

Aired live on pay-per-view
Long Island, N.Y. at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum

The opening video aired focusing on the two main events. They actually put the "25% chance to retain" number in writing. Ugh. Focus was quickly shifted to Kane trying to figure out who took out The Undertaker, as if that was more important than the match itself...

Fireworks lit up the stage and Michael Cole wished everyone a Happy Father's Day. He welcomed everyone to the first ever Fatal Four Way pay-per-view...

Announcer Justin Roberts introduced Vince McMahon, who surprisingly appeared and walked out to the stage. Vince apologized for opening the show on a somber note, but he said Bret Hart would not appear tonight. He showed the footage of last week's limousine assault of Hart.

Vince said he would meet with Bret Hart's people to find out when Bret could return to his duties. He thanked everyone. Drew McIntyre's music hit and he approached McMahon. They smiled at each other and shook hands. Footage aired of the situation with Drew, Teddy Long, Kofi Kingston, and Matt Hardy from Friday's Smackdown...

Twill's Two Cents: If Kane ends up being the Undertaker's attacker, Vince is revealed to be leading the NXT Seven, and he continues to push Drew McIntyre, that right there is three WWE strikes.

Vince was shown getting into his limo. It safely drove away...

Twill's Two Cents: Looks like Vince checked on his driver's qualifications before hiring him.

Drew cut a promo and said Vince McMahon demanded Teddy Long's presence at ringside. Teddy came out. Drew called him pathetic and told him when he wins the Intercontinental Championship, Teddy will hand the belt to him. He told Teddy to take a seat...

Jerry Lawler and Matt Striker checked in with Cole on commentary...

1. Kofi Kingston defeated Drew McIntyre to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship in 16:28. Suicide dive by Kofi onto Drew early on. Drew turned things around and methodically worked on the arm of McIntyre. He continued to wear down Kofi by working on the arm.

Cole said he wishes he was Vince's chosen one. He said Vince has only said two words to him in thirteen years and they were, "Go away."

Twill's Two Cents: That of course is not including the constant screaming into Cole's headset.

King and Striker were playing nice early on. Give it time. Kofi tried to fight back with his feet, but Drew overpowered Kofi and kept him grounded. Drew scored a nearfall after hitting what could best be described as a Codebreaker to the arm. Nice.

Kofi changed the tide with a float over DDT. Another float over into a standing sunset flip pin for a two for Kofi. Russian leg sweep by Kofi and he finally started to show some life. Solid back and forth with a couple of nearfalls for Kofi. Drew hit a running big boot.

Drew attempted the Future Shock but Kofi fought out and hit a springboard tornado DDT for a two count. Drew put his foot on the bottom rope. Running powerbomb by Drew for a two count. Kofi hit the SOS out of nowhere but Drew kicked out.

They fought in the corner and the referee was accidentally kicked in the head. Drew rammed Kofi into the post. He hit the Future Shock but nobody was around to count. Drew tried to wake up the referee and when he couldn't, he approached Teddy Long because he wanted him to count.

Drew rolled Teddy into the ring, took off the referee's shirt, and forced Teddy to put it on. Is that formality really necessary? Teddy counted two and purposely stopped on the way down for three. He shook his head at Drew.

Drew got into Teddy's face. Matt Hardy hit the ring and hit a Twist of Fate on McIntyre. Teddy nodded. Kofi hit the Trouble in Paradise and Teddy gladly counted to three...

Twill's Two Cents: Slow early on with Drew on the offensive, but he did a nice job focusing on the arm of Kofi. Solid match and nice twist in the storyline with Teddy finally getting the best of Drew.

The Hart Dynasty were interviewed backstage. Apparently, they are facing the Usos and Tamina tonight in a six person tag match. They said they would make Bret proud. David Hart Smith said Bret was like a father to him, so they would fight for Bret tonight...

2. Alicia Fox defeated Ever Torres, Maryse, and Gail Kim to win the WWE Divas Championship in 5:40. Rapid fire nearfalls early on. Alicia and Maryse worked on Eve. Maryse has very long hair. I hope she keeps Drano handy. Both Gail and Eve had submissions applied, but both holds were broken.

Eve applied a Camel Clutch. Gail applied a Boston Crab at the same time. Cole and Striker went at it for a moment arguing over who would win if two people made someone tap out simultaneously.

Gail began taking over. If you are watching, do you think Cole knows who the Jumping Bomb Angels are? Eve hit her finisher and a moonsault, but Alicia threw Eve out of the ring. Alicia then pinned Maryse for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Formula fatal four way match. Everyone worked hard. No complaints. Nice job by King in referencing this being the same way The Miz won the United States Championship on Monday.

Backstage, Rey Mysterio and Big Show discussed tonight's match. Show said he is Rey's friend and he respects him, but he will knock him out if he has to. Rey said as big as Show's fist is, Rey's heart is bigger...

Twill's Two Cents: Show's fist could stop Rey's heart.

Chris Jericho made his way to the ring for his match. Nice. Jericho cut a promo and said everyone under the age of 25 watches WWE for him. He said he is no longer the buzz word in WWE. His NXT rookie, Wade Barrett, is making an impact while he is not.

Jericho said when he made a name for himself in WCW (wow, a WCW mention), when he interrupted The Rock in his first WWE appearance, and when he feuded with Shawn Michaels, he was always chasing someone else, but now, Jericho was at the top of the mountain.

The crowd started to cheer for Jericho a bit and he turned them back by saying none of them could relate to Jericho because none of them have ever been the best in the world in anything. He said he challenged Evan Bourne to a rematch tonight because Bourne attacked him after their match last week.

Twill's Two Cents: Jericho vs. Bourne on pay-per-view and they don't advertise it? Come on WWE. By the way, nice promo by Jericho. He has the audience in the palm of his hand.

3. Evan Bourne defeated Chris Jericho in 12:01. Back and forth action early until Bourne hit an impressive high cross body to Jericho on the floor. Jericho quickly regained the advantage by sending Bourne to the floor via springboard dropkick while Bourne stood on the apron.

"Let's go Jericho" chants were audible in the crowd. A more faint "Let's go Bourne" chant could be heard. Bourne scored a nearfall after two kicks to Jericho's head, but Jericho followed with a German suplex with a bridge for a two count. Haven't seen that in awhile from Jericho. Maybe he saw Davey Richards do it last night.

With Jericho standing on the second rope, Bourne hit a jumping hurricarana. Very impressive. Jericho countered those double knees with the Walls. Bourne elevated himself a few notches by struggling and nearly tapping out, but reaching the ropes instead.

Jericho sent Bourne to the floor, but a drop toe hold into the steps by Bourne gave him the advantage. He then hit the top rope double knees to the shoulders for a two count. Bourne hit a kick and ran the apron 90 degrees to set up for the Air Bourne.

Bourne attempted the move but landed on his feet after Jericho moved. Jericho hit the Codebreaker but Evan put his foot on the rope before being pinned. They jockeyed for position on the ropes, but Bourne finally floored Jericho. He hit the AB to Jericho's back and rolled him over for the three count...

Twill's Two Cents: Damn nice surprise and damn good match. Jericho just made Bourne and Bourne took the ball and ran with it. Interesting crowd reaction in that they were very pro-Jericho, but Bourne was over with the crowd after the win. Unexpected and a pleasure to watch.

The World Heavyweight Championship match is up next, but again, it looks like it is taking a back seat to Kane and The Undertaker. Footage of Kane cutting promos on Smackdown about Taker's attack was shown.

Twill's Two Cents: Will Kane prosecute himself? They should put that on PPV. They had Undertaker vs. Undertaker, so why not Kane vs. himself in the ultimate grudge match?

I just thought of something. Are those kids in the Rey Mysterio masks always sitting in the aisle, or do they put them there for his entrance? Another thought: imagine if Rey was as big as Show, he would use a lot of tattoo ink. Show, Punk, Mysterio, and Swagger made their entrances.

4. Rey Mysterio defeated Jack Swagger, Big Show, and C.M. Punk to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in 10:28. Show and Swagger, and Rey and Punk respectively paired off. Punk and Swagger went to the floor, leaving Rey and Show.

Show palmed Mysterio and Cole took a shot again at Kobe Bryant. Did Cole lose money or something. Show swatted Punk like a fly. Rey hit a modified tornado DDT on Show and then Punk kicked him, so it allowed the other three men to exchange nearfalls.

Rey had Swagger set up for the 619, but Punk took over with a springboard closeline. Very cool German suplex spot with Swagger, Punk, and Mysterio all involved simultaneously. Mysterio had Punk ready for a 619, but Show caught him and dropped him on the announce table.

On the floor, Rey dropkicked the ring steps into Show's knees. He followed with a 619 around the post. Punk hit the GTS. Kane's music hit and he rolled that casket out to the ring. He entered the ring and pointed at Punk. He put Punk in the casket, but Gallows attacked before Kane could shut the lid.

Punk and Gallows ran away as Kane followed closely. Mysterio hit the 619 and springboard splash on Swagger for the win and the championship. Rey celebrated with the belt and the announcers made the point that two champions lost their belts in four way matches...

Twill's Two Cents: Well, that was disappointing. Kane made his big entrance, went after Punk, Punk ran away, and Rey won the belt. For the record, Swagger was pinned, so he cannot complain about losing the title without being beaten. That was just very underwhelming and anticlimactic.

An ad in the guise of the Mission Impossible show for the Money in the Bank pay-per-view aired...

John Cena was interviewed by Josh Mathews. Cena said anything could happen tonight and the WWE locker room has an unspoken agreement they will unite against the NXT Seven...

The Miz made his entrance. He said Truth was going to come out and rap, but Miz thought he could do a better job. He then rapped to Truth's music, replacing "What's Up?" with "The Miz." In the ring, he said, "Things are about to blossom, because I'm The Miz, and I'm awesome!" Nice...

Twill's Two Cents: Miz's Truth song is better than Truth's Truth song.

Truth made his entrance and even let a few fans say, "What's up!" into the microphone. What if a fan dropped an F-bomb? ...

5. The Miz defeated R-Truth to retain the WWE United States Championship in 13:22. They mentioned The Miz gained confidence over time and Cole said it was when Miz faced John Cena last summer. I'm guessing Cole didn't remember that one, but even if he did, how is getting squashed in five minutes good for confidence?

Truth was nearly counted out and Miz was relentless working on the mid-section of Truth. Leg scissors by Miz, continuing to apply pressure to the ribs of Truth. Miz was very cerebral and in control on offense. Back suplex by Truth was his first hint of daylight. Crowd went to sleep.

Miz immediately ended that by hitting a vertical suplex. Crowd chanted, "This is boring." Luckily, it was just a few of them. They're working hard and the chant is uncalled for. Truth hit a series of big moves, including the suplex stunner for a two count.

Miz nearly won the title with his backbreaker/neck breaker combination. Crowd just isn't into this at all. Miz missed a move in the corner and Truth hit an axe kick, but Miz grabbed the rope. Miz pinned Truth with a roll-up counter...

Twill's Two Cents: That shows you how important crowd reaction is to a match. There was nothing wrong with that and it was no worse than the opener, but the crowd really didn't care about the feud to begin with. Forgettable, but not bad.

Edge cut a promo backstage saying himself, Cena, and Orton combined to headline numerous WrestleManias, while Sheamus has only appeared at one. He said he would walk out of tonight's pay-per-view as the new WWE Champion...

6. The Hart Dynasty defeated Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, and Tamina in 9:26. Unfortunately for these six, they followed a match nobody reacted to, and most of these people may not know who the Usos are yet. Kidd did the heavy lifting early on and sold a lot.

Oddly enough, the crowd tried to come to life when nothing remarkable was happening in the ring. Then they retreated back to near silence. Natalya received the hot tag and hit several impressive moves on Tamina.

Chaos ensued and Tyson hit a springboard somersault plancha onto both Usos on the floor. In the ring, Tamina hit a Samoan Drop on Natalya. She attempted the top rope splash but Natalya moved out of the way. She followed with a discus lariat for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: I'm guessing the Long Island fans won't get another PPV anytime soon. Surprised to see Smith do so little in this match and while Kidd displayed some impressive offense, he was down for an awful long time. The Usos offense isn't particularly impressive, but that will come with time. Natalya looked impressive in the ring (as usual).

Top of the third hour and with two added matches to the show, it is main event time. Damn, good thing they did add something to this show...

A hype video for the main event was shown. Randy Orton made his entrance to a great pop, but no sustained reaction. Striker said if Orton was not 100%, we would never know...

Twill's Two Cents: Well, if he clinches at his arm and shoulder, that could be a dead giveaway.

Nice pop for Edge too. Boos for Sheamus. Edge looks like he's preparing to wrestle with his shirt on. Loud, screeching cheers, followed by overriding boos, and some sustained cheers for Cena. Roberts handled the in-ring introductions. I swear he "Irished" it up when saying, "Dublin, Ireland."

7. Sheamus defeated John Cena, Edge, and Randy Orton to win the WWE Championship in 17:25. The crowd chanted "Cena sucks, let's go Cena." Not be cliche, but the "Cena sucks" chants were adult males. The "let's go Cena" chants were from children.

First nearfall was Edge on Sheamus with Cena breaking it up. I thought we were getting a powerbomb/superplex spot, but it turned out to be Edge hitting a high cross body on Sheamus. Orotn then cleared the ring of everyone but Cena clawed his way to the apron.

Orton suplexed him into the ring. Orton stomped Cena as the heels laid on the floor. The dueling chants reappeared. Cena tried the Attitude Adjustment on Sheamus, but Sheamus hit the Irish Curse (left handed Rock Bottom into a backbreaker) for a two count.

Twill's Two Cents: The NXT guys are going to have to eat up a lot of time.

Orton hit simultaneous second rope hanging DDTs on Sheamus and Cena. Edge tried to spear Cena but he ran into the turnbuckles instead.

Twill's Two Cents: Why does Edge try to spear someone when they are resting in the corner? Seriously.

Cena locked in the STF on Edge. As Edge approached the rope, Cena released the hold, pulled Edge to the middle of the ring, and reapplied it. Sheamus broke it up. Sheamus had control of the match but Edge ended up in control. Orton hit the RKO on Cena, but Sheamus broke up the pinfall by pushing the referee.

Cole reminded us there were no disqualifications. Edge speared Orton. Sheamus kicked Edge and nearly pinned Orton. Striker said, "The Celtic Criminal was so close."

Twill's Two Cents: The Celtic Criminal? How long did Striker have that one in the holster?

Various Raw stars were watching on a monitor backstage, and the NXT Seven laid them out. The Harts and Evan Bourne were the victims. Sheamus was recovering from being thrown into the announcers. Cena was in the ring and the NXT guys came out throwing stuff.

The announcers took off. Cena was able to hit the AA on his brother from another mother, but the NXT Seven eventually took him out. Sheamus snuck in and won the match. He then took off into the night. The NXT guys continued their attack on Cena.

Sheamus celebrated with his belt at the top of the stage. The NXT Seven went after him with great haste. Cena struggled to get to his feet. Orton was hurt too. The crowd was chanting something and the screen went to black...

Twill's Two Cents: That's it? It's 7:35. I was mildly looking forward to what Kane was going to do and what the NXT guys were going to. Kane's appearance did nothing for that particular match, and the NXT guys pulled the same stuff they did before. Where was the banded together WWE locker room this time? We have a new WWE Champion and nobody was around to announce it. Very odd match. Very odd crowd. Very odd show. This was not one of WWE's better efforts on PPV.

I'll be back later tonight with a Member's Exclusive audio recap of the show. Anyone else agree with me that Fatal Four Way was a one and done PPV concept? Thank you for following along with me tonight.
