Jim Ross calls for an end of chair shots to the head, reveals how people can pay their respects to Eddie "Umaga" Fatu, encourages stronger medical testing and a zero tolerance policy for drug use
Dec 9, 2009 - 05:14 PM

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross updated the blog section of JRsbarbq.com. The following items are among the highlights.

-Ross on chairshots to the head: "Concussions are a big issue in sports today and let's not forget that pro wrestling/sports entertainment or whatever in the hell one wants to call it doesn't have the franchise on this dilemma. However, chair shots to the skull should be forbidden in wrestling. Period. End of story. Bottom line."

Powell's POV: The key is for Vince McMahon, Dixie Carter, and other wrestling promoters to step up and forbid their performers from taking unprotected chair shots to the head. Here's hoping the Sports Legacy Institute research combined with the NFL taking more precautionary measures will help lead to permanent changes before Sunday's TLC pay-per-view.

-Ross on Eddie "Umaga" Fatu: "Eddie Fatu's funeral services are later in the week in Las Vegas. If you want to send flowers or cards you can call the Davis Funeral Home at 702-736-6200."

Powell's POV: I'm guessing the funeral home will be getting plenty of calls from people in the industry as well as fans.

-Ross calls for medical testing programs: "I do encourage all wrestling organizations to instill as stringent a testing program as is possible for concussions, heart issues, etc and to monitor how many days an individual is booked either monthly or annually. Plus, establishing a zero tolerance policy regarding drug abuse is a gimme. Being in the wrestling business should be a privilege not one's right. If one accepts the glory and money one can earn as a successful wrestler in a major company then they should have no issue being a good citizen and living a clean life."

Powell's POV: WWE officials should seriously consider mandatory extended time off for their talent each year. I know some wrestlers will complain because they believe the window of opportunity to make money is small, but this could actually extend their careers. I'm stunned by WWE's reluctance to make this change. After all, they sell house show tickets based primarily on the WWE brand.

Sure, the fans go to the shows hoping to see the top stars, but most fans buy their tickets without seeing a lineup. If WWE can find ways to give their top performers time off to make movies, then they should have no trouble coming up with ways for everyone to get extended breaks from the road. Meanwhile, we know TNA is testing talent, but I've yet to hear of anyone being fined or suspended for failing one of their tests.

Other topics include the mainstream media's take on pro wrestling, plus Tiger Woods, J.R.'s latest doctor visit.
