Major ESPN story on concussions reveals that Andrew "Test" Martin suffered from brain damage, former WWE Diva notes that Eddie "Umaga" Fatu suffered from depression, expresses concern that she and others have done damage
Dec 9, 2009 - 08:30 AM

The ESPN website features a major article on concussions in sports that shines the spotlight on WWE. Dr. Bennet Omalu, co-founder of the Brain Injury Research Institute, states that Andrew "Test" Martin, who died in March, had brain damage similar to Chris Benoit.

Former WWE Diva Dawn Marie expressed concern to ESPN regarding her own neurological state. "Oh, my God," Dawn told ESPN with a quivering voice. "I wonder what's going on inside my brain right now. I'm so shaken up."

Dawn also commented on the death of Eddie Fatu. "We were having fun and laughing with him in October," Dawn said. "It's really so sad to bury so many friends. Dying young … it's almost become acceptable, which is disgusting to me. Did Eddie suffer from depression? Yes. Did he have the tau in his brain? I hope they test his brain tissue to find the answer. There's an epidemic here, and we have to find out why." To read the full story, visit ESPN.com. [Thanks to the various readers who passed along the story]

Powell's POV: The concussion issue is a problem in all pro sports, not just pro wrestling. However, pro wrestling is unique in that features performers taking unnecessary, unprotected chairshots to the head. WWE is now doing neurological testing, but both WWE, TNA, and the various promotions should put an immediate stop to permitting wrestlers to take chairshots to the head. Here's hoping this article will make all wrestling companies and the wrestlers think twice. Obviously, it will be very interesting to see whether WWE features any unprotected chairshots to the head during Sunday's TLC pay-per-view.
