WWE News: An update on the future of Shawn Michaels in WWE
Oct 25, 2009 - 10:15 PM

Dot Net members received the first look at this news last week. They will be listening to the member exclusive audio recap of the WWE Bragging Rights pay-per-view later tonight. To become a member for only $5 per month, visit the Dot Net Members' Signup Page.

Shawn Michaels is not giving people close to him the impression that he's on the verge of retiring within the next year. As reported in today's Dot Net Weekly audio show, people close to Shawn believe he will continue wrestling on a regular basis for another two to three years.

Shawn doesn't work a full-time schedule as it is in that he doesn't appear on all the house show events, and it's possible he'll lighten his schedule even more as time goes on. However, people who know him well do not believe he's on the verge of calling it a career. It's also widely assumed that Shawn will receive a grand sendoff similar to the one Ric Flair received when the time comes for his retirement.

Powell's POV: Shawn started a lot of speculation about his future when he stated in an interview prior to WrestleMania 25 that he had given WWE officials a target date for when he intends to call it quits. There was speculation (including from yours truly) that he might call it quits at WrestleMania 26, but there's no buzz behind the scenes about him hanging up the boots anytime soon. The feeling of multiple sources is that you'd see storyline signs if he were on the verge of retirement, and there would be buzz about it behind the scenes.

My hope is that when the time comes for Shawn to retire, WWE will be wise enough to give him a retirement tour rather than have his career abruptly end as Flair's did. WWE left a lot of money on the table by not officially announcing Flair's retirement date and hyping his final appearances at house shows across the country (there has been a lot of talk that TNA is planning a retirement tour for Sting and I absolutely love the idea).

There has also been speculation from insiders that Shawn's sendoff will actually be bigger and better than Flair's because he's been a longtime favorite of Vince McMahon and spent the bulk of his career with the company, whereas Flair was with WCW for most of his career. That said, WWE gave Flair an amazing weekend sendoff, so they have their work cut out for them if they intend to top Naitch's last days with the company.
