WWE announced on Friday that Shane McMahon is leaving the company on Jan. 1, 2010. "It has been an incredible experience to help build WWE into a global phenomenon," Shane said in a statement posted on the WWE website. "However, having been associated with this organization for the majority of my life, I feel this is the opportune time in my career to pursue outside ventures."

Vince McMahon also commented on his son's departure: "Even though I am personally saddened by Shane’s decision to leave the company, I am proud of the enormous contributions he has made. Powell's POV: The news was posted on the WWE corporate website in addition to the main page on WWE.com. Thus, I assume it's a legitimate story, as WWE would be crazy to mislead their shareholders. If it is work, then they are going to great lengths to pull it off. The story does not note what Shane's new job will be.
