WWE SummerSlam onsite report: An in-person perspective on the show - "Kane vs. Great Khali made my soul hurt"
Aug 24, 2009 - 01:10 AM |
Dot Net reader Steve from Downey, Calif. attended WWE SummerSlam in Los Angeles, Calif. and filed the following report.
The card was not as stacked as I would have hoped going in, but the show delivered in the end. Mostly strong matches throughout the night. Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler was an incredible back-and-forth opener. I consider myself a jaded long-time wrestling fan, but even I was happily fooled by all of the false finishes.
JeriShow vs. Cryme Tyme was fine for what it was. Cryme Tyme was not nearly as over in the Staples Center as they have been elsewhere (or as they were in the same building at a house show in February). Not sure why on that one.
The MVP and Jack Swagger interview exchange was incredible, but should have played out over the span of three weeks on Raw to hype their match instead of 10 seconds before a match that otherwise had no reason for existing. They really dropped the ball on that one. They should have either promoted it better prior to SummerSlam or held off on the match until it could have been properly promoted down the line.
Kane vs. Great Khali made my soul hurt. I actually looked up to the sky at one point and audibly asked God to take away the pain and make the match end.
DX was over HUGE with the crowd, and their match did not disappoint either their loyal fans or those of us who were hoping for a good rub to Legacy (they looked strong even in defeat, just as Ziggler did earlier).
Christian vs. William Regal was what it was, which was short. Sad to see Christian get no time, but the show ran long. Sorry, Captian Charisma.
The John Cena vs. Randy Orton spectacle was fine by me because the crowd at it up like a labrador eating chocolate cake that falls off the table. The place was on fire. So I'm cool with the hijinx, despite Lilian Garcia botching the call early on.
C.M. Punk vs. Jeff Hardy was solid but not mind-blowing. The Undertaker finish was wet-your-diaper incredible. No one, and The Rock means no one, saw that coming. And nobody even noticed he had traded places with Hardy. Wow. Just wow.
Biggest Pops
1. Undertaker (by a light year)
2. Cena
3. DX entrance
4. Hardy
5. Orton
Biggest Heat
1. Orton
2. Jericho's promo
3. Punk
