WWE Raw in Calgary onsite report: Detailed notes on how the Calgary fans responded to DX, Chris Jericho, and John Cena, Dot Net reader meets Ricky Steamboat, plus which wrestlers did and did not sign autographs afterward
Aug 11, 2009 - 01:12 PM

Dot Net reader Nav Ghali attended the WWE Raw show in Calgary on Monday and passed along the following report.

Randy Orton got some huge heat to start. John Cena came out to a mixed reaction. BIG pop for Chris Jericho with loud “Y2J” chants.

The crowd loved Gail Kim during the four-way match.

HUGE heat for Sgt. Slaughter. He played the anti-Canadian well.

Calgary Kid got a nice ovation, and was cheered heavily even when revealed to be The Miz.

The crowd was into Big Show vs. Orton but hated the count-out finish.

The crowd loved MVP when he first came out after the short Jack Swagger vs. Evan Bourne match (which was too short for anyone to get into), and then during his match with Chris Masters.

The crowd was into Mark Henry and Hornswoggle, and was all standing and hoping he’d hit the Tadpole Splash (big let down he didn’t).

HUGE, and I mean, HUGE heat for the entire Bret Hart tease and us getting Hacksaw Duggan. This is what led to the “We want Bret” chants for the rest of the show.

The crowd was pretty silent through the first two DX skits, but loved the DX reunion at the end and popped during the superkicks.

During the commercial break before the Chris Jericho vs. Cena match started, Y2J tried to get even more heel heat by saying that it was okay that we wanted Bret, but we weren’t going to get him and would have to settle for Jericho, who was the best thing to come out of Calgary and the best at what he does right now in the world (hard to argue).

Cena was 50-50 at first, but by the end of the night, he was getting mostly cheers. The crowd was behind him for the 5-knuckle shuffle and STFU. It goes to show how good Jericho really is that he got a hometown crowd to boo him by the end of the night.

After the show was over, Cena took the mic and put Bret Hart over huge, saying he was a true champion, a competitor, and that Calgary was a wrestling city that still respected competition and sportsmanship. He said he doesn’t like Orton, but would respect him as a champion and competitor like Bret, and raise his hand if he came to the ring and shook Cena’s hand.

Orton slowly came in and Cena raised his hand, which the crowd loved and popped for. Orton then jumped Cena after he turned around, and went for the punt. He missed and Cena hit the Attitude Adjuster to send the crowd home happy. Huge cheers for him at the end. Orton’s music then played. He did his Orton pose, and left, and Lilian thanked us after the show.

Finally, after the show, I had the chance to meet Ricky Steamboat, who was a huge class act. Masters and Eugene also came out to sign autographs, and were extremely accommodating to the kids. Mickie James was the only one from her car to come over to sign and take pictures (while Carlito, Jillian Hall, Alicia Fox and Gail Kim waited in the car). And finally, Lilian Garcia also came over to sign, and was a class act the entire show, waving and talking to fans during commercials and when waiting to announce in the ring.
