7/28 WWE Smackdown in Baltimore: A detailed report on the show that airs Friday with Jeff Hardy vs. John Morrison for the World Hvt. Championship (spoilers)
Jul 29, 2009 - 09:05 AM |
Dot Net reader Anthony Daughtry is at the WWE Smackdown taping in Baltimore and passed along the following report.
Smackdown started with a video hyping Jeff Hardy's win over CM Punk from Night of Champions. The opening rolled followed by Jeff coming out to a HUGE pop. He came down in jeans and a t-shirt and cut a promo about his win over Punk. He said he was proud to be an individual and that if everyone was like Punk, the world would be boring. He then said Punk has a rematch due whenever he wants against "whoever" the champion is. Jeff said he meant "whoever" because he was fighting John Morrison for the belt later tonight. He put Morrison over and said that their match would be one of the greatest main events in Smackdown history.
Instead of Jeff's music coming on at the end of his promo Cryme Tymes music hit. They came out as Jeff looked on. Cryme Tyme hit the ring and raised Jeff's hands in victory. All three posed as they went to commercial. When they came back from commercial they showed the Raw Rebound which highlighted the Shaq/Cryme Time/JeriShow match. The rebound ended with Shaq knocking down Show and they came back to Cryme Tyme live in the ring laughing at the clip. The Hart Dynasty came out next.
1. Cryme Tyme defeated The Hart Dynasty to earn a tag title show. The match is billed as a number one contenders match to the Tag Team Championship with the winner going on to face Jericho and Big Show at Summer Slam. Good match here. Tyson and David team on Shad for most of the match leading to the hot tag to JTG. JTG comes in and cleans house. Smith tries to pull Shad off the apron but Shad knocks him down and they fight outside the ring leaving Tyson and JTG by themselves. JTG hits the Shout Out on Tyson for the win.
Cryme Tyme celebrate for a moment but is interrupted by JeriShow. They have new music which starts with the Shows "Wellllll" and goes into Jeircho's music. Kind of like how Rated RKO's music blended Ortons and Edges music but not as well. Kind of awkward. Jericho and Show come out dressed in suits with mics in hand. Jericho told Cryme Tyme to enjoy their moment but that they should know it is all downhill from here. He goes on to put him and Show over, saying they have 40 championships between them.
Shad points out they didnt look as good last Monday when Shaq was there. JTG calls Jericho "Christina" and blows him a kiss. He called Big Show "Fat Boy" and reminded him of how Shaq put Show on his "Big Fat Back." Big Show pointed out that he and Jericho were the perfect team, saying how he held the ECW, WCW and WWE titles. Shad followed this up with a funny bit, comparing Jericho and Show to Han Solo and Chewbacca. He told JTG it was okay as he knew how to speak Wookie followed by him doing a pretty good Chewy impression. Both teams then got serious and said they would win at Summer Slam.
2. Eve and Melina defeated Michelle McCool and Layla. Melina got a big pop. Pretty standard match here. Eve is held off, hot tag to Melina. Melina came in and hit her split kick in a cool spot. The finish came when Michelle had Melina up for a slam and Melina carried her momentum over into a flip-powerbomb type slam. Awesome spot. Melina definitely carried this match.
John Morrison does an interview. He puts over Jeff Hardy and his title win but says he will be bringing the title back to the temple of wisdom.
They showed a promo for the next match which is Dolph Ziggler and Mike Knox taking on Finley and Rey Mysterio. They cut to the back and showed Dolph and Maria walking hand and hand. Dolph kissed Maria's hand and walked toward the ring. He is out first, followed by Knox. Finlay is out to a decent pop. Finally Rey came out to a HUGE pop. Second biggest of the night.
3. Rey Mysterio and Finlay defeated Mike Knox and Dolph Ziggler (w/Maria). Long match here. Lots of back and forth. Toward the end, Knox and Dolph work as a team to keep Finlay in. Finally Rey gets the tag and goes after Dolph. He hits the 619 on Dolph and goes for the pin only to be broken up by Knox. Finlay takes Knox out and Rey rolls up Dolph for the win. Finlay and Rey hug after the match.
Josh Matthews is back stage and calls for his guest, the former World Heavyweight Champion. CM Punk comes in and talks about losing the title the Hardy. He said it was a fluke and the better man didn't win. He said he wasn't getting preachy he was just stating the facts. He said he wished Jeff was straight edged. He said he wished Josh was too, as well as all the fans. He wished both me luck in the main event, saying he would see the winner. Very mixed reaction with this segment. Still some fans for Punk in the building.
4. Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) fought Charlie Haas to a no-contest when Kane interfered. Khali who comes out with Ranjin Singh to a good reaction. Short match. Khali is getting the upper hand when Kane runs in the ring. He looks like he is going after Khali but Khali turns to face him and Kane back peddles out of the ring. Khali gives chance and Kane grabs Ranjin in a choke and drags him all the way up the aisle with Khali in pursuit. Kane dumps Ranjin near the stage and looks on at the entrance as Khali gives aid to his translator. This goes on for quite awhile, Kane staring while Khali tries to help Ranjin. I'm not sure if they were trying to do and injury angle of what. I imagine this will make more sense with JR filling in the blanks.
5. Jeff Hardy defeated John Morrison to retain the World Hvt. Championship. Morrison makes his way out to a good reaction. Another video is shown of Jeff winning the title at Night Of Champions. Jeff Hardy comes out to another HUGE ovation. They do the intros in the ring and the match starts. Great match here. Long match as well. Lots of back and forth. At one point Morrison kicks out of the Swanton Bomb which was surprising. In the end Jeff blocks Starship Pain with his knees and hits the Twist Of Fate and another Swanton for the win.
CM Punk's music hits and he comes out. He is clapping coming down the aisle and even pats John on the back. He gets in the ring and raises Jeff's hand and points to him. Punk asks for the mic. He says, "Jeff, the past few weeks obviously..." and smashes the mic over Jeffs head. GREAT SPOT. The crowd goes nuts. If Punk was a tweener before he is definitely a full fledged heel now.
Punk is getting a bunch of heat as he attacks Jeff. He tosses Jeff from the ring and just beats him down in front of the announce table. Punk teases walking away and then comes back and beats of Jeff some more. Crazy heat here. Punk might give Orton and Jericho a run for their money. Punk finally walks away and gets almost to the back. He gets a mic and says "I want everyone to watch Smackdown next week when I take back my World Heavyweight Championship" as the show ends.
Amazing ending. Between the mixed reaction to the tweener promo earlier in the night and him playing up the face roll by patting John on the back and raising Jeff's arm I honestly didn't see the Heel turn coming. Especially when Punk started to talk and hit Hardy with the mic. I hope this comes across well on TV because it was perfect live. All and all a solid show. Much better than the last few times WWE has been to Baltimore. Although I must agree with what Joey Styles and Chris Jericho said on their Twitters before the show, Baltimore could stand to get a new arena.
Dark Match
1. Jeff Hardy defeated C.M. Punk in a cage match to retain the World Hvt. Championship. Funny moment came when they were building the cage and Punk reprimanded the ring crew telling them to hurry and build his cage as he didn't have all night. It was a quick match that saw Jeff kick out of the Go2Sleep and pin Punk after another Swanton (The third of the night). The only complaint I really have is on a night with three Tag Team matches in a row I only saw Chris Jericho in a suit talking for a few minutes.
Biggest Pops:
Jeff Hardy
Rey Mysterio
Christian
Melina
Biggest Heat:
Punk (After Heel turn)
JeriShow
Ryder (Interrupting Dreamer)
Dolph Ziggler
