Powell's Blog: WWE Raw is tonight, but everyone is talking about former WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar, WWE Smackdown thoughts on Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy, C.M. Punk, R-Truth, Maria, and more

Monday, July 13 – 5:11 P.M. (CT)

-Everyone is talking about Brock Lesnar's fight and post-match antics. WWE has yet to acknowledge Lesnar's latest win. I can live with that. They attempted to latch onto him when he defeated Randy Couture to capture the UFC Hvt. Championship, but it's not like he has spoken favorably about the company since then.

What troubles me more is that WWE hasn't done anything to get people talking about their product since the fight. They've advertised Seth Green as the special guest host for this week and that's about it. I'm guessing they'll still advertise a match or two, but they really need to get people buzzing about their product tonight.

Vince McMahon can pretend he's not directly competing with UFC, but everyone other than him and Dana White know they're battling for pay-per-view dollars.

I like Seth Green. He's a much better celebrity host than I expected from WWE. He's young and his television show "Robot Chicken" caters to a younger demographic. I'd feel a lot better about Green's appearance if I'd heard that he spend the week working on his segments with the WWE creative team, but I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway, not all wrestling fans feel so fondly about the Green publicity stunt. What about them? Why not give them something to latch onto at a time when everyone is buzzing about Brock and UFC 100?

The WWE creative team has had nearly two weeks to book this show thanks to the overseas tour that caused the company to pre-tape last week's show. I know Vince McMahon books on the fly these days, but you can't tell me that they couldn't have at least advertised a match or two to get people talking about this show. Granted, they don't have any match that could pull attention away from Lesnar, but the least they could do is try.

Again, they can still advertise a hot match between now and when the show starts, but why not advertise such a match earlier in the day when more people are at their work computers? I guess it's too late for that now, but here's hoping WWE does something tonight to get people talking about something other than one of their former wrestlers.

WWE Smackdown Thoughts

-So the perky Maria is now a chick who isn't afraid to score in an arena closet. Wait, what happened to the PG product? I'm not complaining, I'm just saying.

-WWE needs to keep John Morrison away from Teddy Long. The Michael Jackson tribute was horrible, and their chummy interaction backstage on Friday night wasn't much better. That said, I enjoyed Morrison's match with Dolph Ziggler.

-Pretty Ricky? WTF was that? Horrible debut, but I guess we'll have to wait and see what else they have in mind for R-Truth. If Pretty Ricky is the only spoof character he plays, they should scrap the idea immediately. Ugh.

-C.M. Punk's promo regarding his prescription eye drops was great. I am surprised they are having Punk bring up Hardy's two strikes in the WWE Wellness Policy. One, I'm sure they're confusing the hell out of viewers who have no idea what two strikes means. Two, what will the fans who know what it means think if Hardy follows through on his talk of taking time off?

-If Smackdown is a PG program, then why does Hulu feel the need to edit the more violent aspects of the show off the version they air?

-I'm guessing the Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho match was supposed to be their blowoff. Here's hoping they get back to that amazing feud by having Jericho drop the tag titles and stick in the singles division where he belongs.
