Dot Net WWE News - Who created the Boogeyman character? Update on his release from WWE
Mar 16, 2009 - 02:03 PM

Boogeyman's (a/k/a Marty Wright) release from WWE was surprising if only because Vince McMahon has always been high on the character. However, the feeling within the company was that Wright, who will turn 45 later this year, never caught on in the ring and was simply too old to invest in.

"The guy tried hard," said one former coworker. "He didn't have the gift that (others) had, but he never phoned it in." The source noted that Wright always pitched ideas for his character, was well-liked in the locker room, and was limited in the ring by an asthma condition.

Wright is claiming rights to the Boogeyman character and plans to use it on the independent scene. However, a source with knowledge of the situation said Vince McMahon actually came up with the name. "I can tell you 100 percent that Vince McMahon came up with the name and the phrase 'I'm coming to get you,'" said the source. The WWE insider also added that Boogeyman created the look and came up with elements of the characters look, the walk, and even the worm eating routine.

Powell's POV: There has been speculation that Wright's release was related to his good friend Booker T speaking out against the company for booking talent that had already committed to his WrestleMania 25 weekend charity event, but multiple sources say he was on the bubble long before then.
