May 17, 2013 - 09:33 AM |
The Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy announced that WWE has donated $1.2 million to Sports Legacy Institute to launch a new program aimed at developing a treatment for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. SLI is co-founded by former WWE wrestler Christopher Nowinski, whose career was cut short by concussion issues.
"We appreciate the generosity of WWE," Nowinski stated in a press release. "I enjoyed my time at WWE, and I am excited to reunite with the organization on this important cause that will benefit a lot of people we both care about."
WWE executive vice president of talent and live events Paul Levesque (a/k/a Triple H) also commented. "WWE is proud to help advance this critical research to help anyone at risk of suffering CTE," "Levesque said. "WWE has been, and will continue to be, very proactive on taking measures to ensure the health and wellness of our talent."
Powell's POV: The donation will be paid over the next three years. The press release also states that more than 600 living athletes have committed to donate their brain to CSTE after death, and that number includes "dozens of current and former WWE Superstars."
