PTI’s Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon chime in on Floyd Mayweather and WWE
Feb 26, 2008 - 05:14 PM |
ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon laughed off Floyd Mayweather’s claim that he is getting a $20 million payoff to appear at WrestleMania 24. “No, he’s not getting $20 million,” Wilbon said.
“He might get $2 million, probably not event that,” he continued. “Probably a couple hundred thousand. And that’s okay. I understand that Mayweather is used to big money because he’s made it in the ring—in his own ring. That thing (WrestleMania) is not big enough. It’s not NASCAR. It’s not the NFL. He’s not going to get $20 million.”
Wilbon also noted that pro wrestling is scripted and said Mayweather most likely would not get hurt, although he did acknowledge that injuries do occur in pro wrestling. Kornheiser, who clearly doesn’t follow pro wrestling, predicted that Mayweather would not get in the ring.
Powell’s POV: I was with Wilbon until he suggested that Mayweather would make roughly $200,000 because WrestleMania isn’t big enough. Worse yet, he seems to take the payoffs that boxers claim to make around as gospel. WWE could certainly afford to pay Mayweather $20 million if they wanted to. And while WWE may not be on par with the NFL or NASCAR from a financial standpoint, the company is much bigger than Wilbon implied. For what it’s worth, WrestleMania was listed as the fifth story on their rundown of daily talking points.
