Andy Kaufman's pro wrestling exploits recalled in CNN feature, claims WWE won't allow him in the Hall of Fame
Apr 7, 2012 - 03:07 PM |
The pro wrestling exploits of Andy Kaufman were chronicled in a lengthy CNN website feature. The story states that Kaufman remains shut out of the WWE Hall of Fame. "His absence from the Hall of Fame is conspicuous," Syracuse professor Bob Thompson said. "He is one of the really important members of the pantheon of that form." Powell's POV: I have no doubt that WWE would have inducted Kaufman if he were alive. Obviously, they use the celebrity wing to garner publicity or even as an endorsement tradeoff (see Drew Carey). Vince McMahon Sr. actually turned down an opportunity to use Kaufman before he worked for Memphis. Yet while he didn't work for WWE, he is as deserving as any celebrity that they have inducted, and hopefully the company will find a spot for him one of these years. Thanks to Dot Net readers Chris Newell and David Scherich for passing along the story.
