Dot Net Exclusive: How the Shooting Star Press returned to WWE, why Evan Bourne was asked to stop using his original finishing move
Jul 21, 2008 - 10:19 AM

WWE wrestlers were not allowed to use the shooting star press until recently when Evan Bourne started using it as his finishing move in ECW. When Bourne was called up, he was asked to provide some of the moves he uses that could be featured as finishing moves. The shooting star press was among the finishers he gave them, but it was initially rejected.

Rather, Bourne used a double knee drop off the top rope as his finisher when he debuted in the company. However, some WWE officials decided the move was too similar to a move that Rey Mysterio uses. The shooting star press mentioned again when Bourne was approached about coming up with a new finisher. Company officials were still reluctant and had him demonstrate the move repeatedly to prove it would not be a safety risk. He nailed the move each time he performed it in front of them and eventually received the green light to use the move as his finisher.

Powell's POV: I love Mysterio and all, but none of his moves are that similar to the double knee drop. That's just someone in the company being nitpicky. If nothing else, though, it's good to hear that company officials erred on the side of caution when it came to letting Bourne use the shooting star press as his finisher.
