Jim Ross reveals whether he was hired for his dream job, comments on Abdullah the Butcher being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, former UFC Champ Brock Lesnar and former WWE announcer Jonathan Coachman
Mar 23, 2011 - 09:57 PM

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross updated the blog section of JRsbarbq.com. The following items are among the highlights.

-Ross on the Oklahoma Sooners radio job: "I missed out on the OU Football play by play position but the University made an excellent hire with 37 year old Toby Rowland. I'm disappointed that I didn't get a shot at my childhood 'dream job' but I'm happy for Toby and know that he will do a great job of underscoring the 'theater of the mind,' better known as radio, to the Sooner faithful. Some of my friends feel that my long time association and name identity within pro wrestling over the years did not work in my favor. I'm not sure that I agree with that analogy but the bottom line is that it wasn't meant to be and as I said all along I felt that I was a long shot at best."

Powell's POV: It's a shame Ross didn't get his dream job. You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger backer of the Sooners, and he has NFL radio experience. I can't say I know anything about Rowland, but it's good to see Ross is being gracious about the decision. If Ross's connection to pro wrestling cost him the gig, then the decision makers at Oklahoma need to have their heads examined.

-Ross on Abdullah the Butcher being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame: "Abdullah the Butcher is a superb selection for the WWE Hall of Fame as he has stood the test of time and made the term 'Hardcore' fashionable.  Who was more 'Hardcore' for more years than Abby? Seems to me that the Butcher was the true innovator of the hardcore style of wrestling featuring blood and weapons."

Powell's POV: A few Dot Net Members were down on the idea of Abby going into the Hall of Fame. I'll tell anyone who feels that way the same thing I told the members, which is to look up some classic Abby vs. Bruiser Brody brawls. Make no mistake about it, Abby is absolutely Hall of Fame worthy.

-Ross on Brock Lesnar: "Look for Brock Lesnar to pop up on ESPN over the next few days, perhaps with Jonathan Coachman, for a 'unique' feature on the former WWE, UFC and NCAA Champion. Brock next fights June 11, at this time in Vancouver, against Junior Dos Santos. Of course Lesnar is one of the coaches for The Ultimate Fighter which debuts soon not to mention that Brock's book, co-written with Paul Heyman, will be in stores in a few weeks. I'm anxious to read Brock's book and hope that you check it out as well."

Powell's POV: It looks like Brock will be making the rounds to promote The Ultimate Fighter, which debuts one week from tonight (Wednesday). I'm looking forward to this season more than ever, as I have no idea what to expect from Brock. I guess that's what makes him so much fun to follow.

Other topics include more Abdullah the Butcher, fun memories of Sir Oliver Humperdink, Jon "Bones" Jones, Jim Ross playing a video game, the first match J.R. and The King broadcast together.
