Dot Net WWE News: Notes on MVP's release from WWE, what's next, and the possibility of being able to use his name
Dec 6, 2010 - 12:00 PM

By Jason Powell

The word coming out of WWE is that MVP (a/k/a Hassan Hamin Assad) left the company on good terms. He previously noted on his Twitter page that he requested his release, and he also expressed interest in working internationally, presumably for the New Japan promotion.

Sources are speculating that one of his goals is to leave the company prove himself elsewhere with the hope that he would be viewed differently should he opt to return to WWE at some point.

Multiple sources have speculated that he may be able to take the MVP gimmick with him. He created the gimmick prior to being signed by the company and thus might have the rights to it. It's also possible that he signed over the rights to the persona when he signed with WWE, but there is a lot of talk that he will be able to use the gimmick outside WWE.

Powell's POV: It would be huge if he were able to take the MVP gimmick with him, as I've always felt that it was a tremendous heel character that was never fully exploited by WWE creative. It's Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, Stephon Marbury (who he has cited as partial inspiration for the character), and every diva athlete rolled into one.

I've heard different takes on whether he views TNA as a serious option at this point, as one source noted that may not be in the cards if his goal is to showcase his talent in Japan and then eventually return to WWE.
