8/17 WWE Smackdown taping: Detailed report on the taping for Friday's television show, recap of Undertaker's appearance in the dark match (spoilers)
Aug 18, 2010 - 11:57 AM

Dot Net reader Edwin Fastnacht attended the WWE Smackdown taping on Tuesday in California and passed along the following report.

Rey Mysterio came out to a big pop to start off Smackdown. He started by thanking the fans for helping him through a difficult time and talked about how Kane accused a lot of innocent people, when it was Kane that took out Taker.

Alberto del Rio came out to interrupt. He talked about being from a rich and noble family while Rey was from the streets. Rey said that del Rio thought he was privileged to have respect but he had to earn respect in the WWE. Del Rio countered that if Rey didn't respect him, he would make Rey respect him. Del Rio got in Rey's face and Rey smacked him and hit a 619 on del Rio.

WWE picked the perfect time to debut del Rio with the large amount of Hispanic/Mexican attendees in the crowd. Del Rio had major heat, especially for a debuting superstar.

1. Kofi Kingston defeated Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero) via disqualification in an Intercontinental Championship match. Solid pop for Kofi, little reaction for Ziggler. Solid match between the two. Kofi hit the fulcrum kick on Ziggler and went up to the top rope. Vickie pushed Kofi off and the ref called for the bell. Kofi was going to chase Dolph but Vickie stood in his way. Kofi stared down Vickie and Dolph attacked from behind. Dolph threw Kofi into the barrier and back in the ring. He hit the Zig Zag, locked in a sleeper, and afterwards stomped on Kofi's head.

This is where the crowd started to become dead and only started popping for the big moments and main eventers. I've noticed in some of your site's coverage of Smackdown where you guys describe that the crowd is out of it and it could be due to the fact that the kids and their parents are tired (like it seemed to be in Bakersfield). Me and my brother started a "Let's go Ziggler" chant with just the two of us chanting while Ziggler had a rest hold on Kofi and got zero rebuttal from everyone else.

Backstage, Luke Gallows and Joey Mercury talked about Punk walking out on them at SummerSlam, and Serena said he was teaching them a lesson. Punk asked if they watched what Nexus did on Raw. He said same thing applies tonight, if they lose then they are out of the SES.

2. Luke Gallows and Serena defeated Big Show and Kelly Kelly via pinfall. Big Show handled Gallows for a few seconds before Luke hurried to tag in Serena. Kelly hit the X-Factor on Serena but Luke came in to drag her off. Big Show took out Luke to ringside and beat on him. Serena hit a modified GTS gutbuster (instead of kneeing Kelly in the face, she dropped her on knee for a gutbuster) for the win. Punk came out to celebrate with SES at the top of the ring.

Kane came out to solid heat for his promo on the explanation of his actions. He delivered a good promo in line with what he has been doing for the last couple months. He said that his intentions were always to take out Taker but he had failed before and was waiting for the right moment. Kane talked about how Taker became soft after showing remorse to Michaels at Wrestlemania. He said that he was now the devil's favorite demon.

I'm not sure when this happened but I think it was after the Kane promo. Backstage, Jack Swagger was complaining to Rosa Mendes. MVP came into the segment and said that all Jack does now is whine. Swagger said that he was better than MVP in every way and would prove it by beating MVP in the Jack Swagger Sr. Invitational (named after his father). Swagger said that if he won, he would get to host the V.I.P Lounge. MVP agreed and said that if he won, Swagger would pick up the tab on his expensive end of summer party.

3. Christian defeated Drew McIntyre via pinfall. Christian came out to a solid pop, while Drew got little to nothing. Dashing Cody Rhodes came out to join on commentary. Drew focused on Christian's injured arm for the majority of the match. Christian jumped from the top rope onto a standing McIntyre and hit a nice DDT. Both men tried for their finishers and Christian rolled McIntyre up for the quick 1-2-3. Cody got up and distracted Christian and McIntyre attacked from behind. Both beat down on Christian until Matt Hardy came out for the save. Matt hit the Side Effect on Cody but then Drew attacked Matt's ankle. Cody held Matt down while Drew stomped on the ankle. Drew hit the Future Shock DDT on Hardy and Cody hit CrossRhodes on Christian.

Backstage, Teddy Long explained to Kane that Taker would be on Smackdown next week and Kane said that there would be "hell on Earth."

4. Alberto del Rio defeated Rey Mysterio via submission. Tony Chimel introduced Alberto del Rio's personal ring announcer, Jesus Gonzalez. Jesus introduced del Rio, who had a long entrance. Rey came out to a huge pop. Del Rio started working on Rey's arm from the beginning. A lot of 619 cheers throughout the match, the most the crowd was into Smackdown since the opening segment with these two. Rey hit his high-flying offense. He went to the top rope for another move but del Rio took him down. He applied his roll-through armbar submission for the win. It was an awkward end to the match as it seemed it should have gone on a few minutes longer and Mysterio tapped out fairly quickly. Jesus Gonzalez announced del Rio as the winner and del Rio went back to apply his armbar submission again. Del Rio posed at the top of the ramp to close the show.

Dark Match

1. Kane defeated Rey Mysterio and Jack Swagger via pinfall in a steel cage match for the World Heavyweight Championship. The cage was not the regular steel cage for main events (it looked sketchy). Swagger, Rey, and Kane came out to solid reactions. Swagger tested the cage and it looked like he could have shaken the cage down. Win can happen via pinfall, submission, or escape. Kane started on Rey while Swagger played avoidance. Swagger came into play when Rey gained the advantage. Rey played master of the crotch shots as he baseball slided into both opponents nether regions and when getting caught trying to escape knocked both men off to get crotched by the rope. In the end, Kane tossed Rey into the cage wall and hit a Chokeslam on Swagger to retain his title.

As Kane was celebrating, Taker's music hit to a huge pop from the crowd. "Yeah/Boo" reaction to Taker/Kane punches. Kane got Taker in a chokehold, but Taker countered with one of his own. Swagger hit Taker from behind and Kane ran out of the ring. Taker hit a Chokeslam and Tombstone Piledriver on Swagger before staring down Kane. Taker did his usual end of the match setup to a huge pop and sent the crowd home happy.

Biggest Pops:
1. Undertaker
2. Rey Mysterio
3. Big Show
4. Kofi Kingston
5. MVP (On Superstars)

Biggest Heat:
1. Alberto del Rio
2. Kane
3. Straight Edge Society
4. Swagger (On Superstars)
5. Cody Rhodes/Drew McIntyre (during beatdown)
