Former WWE creative team member comments on Raw lead writer Brian Gewirtz
Apr 25, 2008 - 02:00 PM

Seth Mates, a former WWE creative team member, commented on current WWE Raw lead writer Brian Gewirtz in his Newsday blog. "Brian was named head of the Raw writing team a few months before I joined creative, and being that I was a part of the Smackdown writing team, I didn't work with him as much as others did," Mates writes. "But I did get to see him in action on a number of occasions, and I gotta say, for all the flak he's taken, he's been a huge driving force behind the company's success...

"Sure, you'll read criticism of Brian online, but think about it. Most of the people leaking the news you read online are wrestlers trying to control their own press. And it sure is easy to complain about your boss anonymously, isn't it? These guys can't exactly complain about Vince or Stephanie when their match or backstage segment gets cut—so the writer gets the heat. Plus, Vince loves Brian, which makes others around the company jealous of him." To read the full column, visit Newsday.com.

Powell's POV: Are the sources who provide Newsday with information trying to control their own press? Just curious. As for Gewirtz, he is a hard working individual by all accounts. He's clearly respected by the McMahon family and is clearly the most trusted member on their creative staff. He's done plenty of good for the company, but he has his flaws like everyone else.

Do people tend to focus on the negative at times? Maybe, but in recent weeks I've praised the material he wrote for Dwayne Johnson's speech at the WWE Hall of Fame, not to mention covered the stories regarding how overworked and understaffed the creative team has been. I'm not taking Seth's column as a persona attack by any means, but I don't find his portrayal of "people leaking the news" to be an accurate description.
