WWE “ECW on SyFy” Hits
Opening Segment: The only bright part of the show was the opening segment with Christian and Regal. Christian’s rant was logical. He didn’t care that Regal got what he wanted, he just wanted to get his hands on Regal. Regal played his part well, and the baseball slide just before the break was a nice addition. I also like that Tiffany banned the goons from ringside next week. This is the only real feud on ECW right now and it shows.
WWE “ECW on SyFy” Misses
Regal vs. Goldust: Sloppy short match that didn’t help Regal at all. Yes, he was supposedly hurt from Christian’s attack, but he handled Goldust easily so what was the big deal? These two have had much better matches and those made this match look especially bad.
Shelton Benjamin vs. Zack Ryder: I guess I should be happy that Ryder finally has an angle. But the lame joke with the hair gel and the way he gawked at Rosa was so over the top it lost all credibility. If he remains this much of a tool, he will be in Eugene land: a gimmick that you can never break free of. And for the love of God, do something with Shelton Benjamin. He’s too good in the ring to be wasted like he is.
Abraham Washington Segment: For the record, I am white. But I am often offended by the characters black athletes are given in WWE. Abraham Washington’s rant made him look like a ghetto transplant. Having the set on his momma’s credit because he has bad credit? Really? A fart box for Atlas? C’mon. I cannot believe that the same company that suspended Michael Hayes for saying a word perpetuates negative stereotypes week in and week out.
Vance Archer: I have never been a fan of the introduction squash of the local jobber. Great, he beat up a guy half his size that no one has ever heard from. That translates to what exactly? Nothing, and that’s the problem. Put this guy in a meaningful match with a real opponent and then we will accept him as legitimate. Not until then.
Christian and Yoshi Tatsu vs. Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson: My biggest problem with this match was the ring psychology used. Or rather, the lack of ring psychology used. Yes, the formula for a face win in a tag match is to have one guy beat up and the other make the save. But this was done so poorly. Yoshi got in zero offense and was a rag doll to the big men. After all that, it’s a big leap to expect Christian to clean up like he did. The ending was too quick to be believable. Terrible match. The beat down at the end wasn’t the worst thing I have ever seen, but it’s just more of the same reason why I ultimately hate stables.
Overall show: I said in my report that this may have been the worst hour of WWE TV I have ever seen. Your emails have reminded me of some stinkers, but last night made me want to quit watching wrestling. That’s the first time I felt that way in a while. All the matches had major problems, and other than the opening, the talking segments were bad or stupid or both. It was so easy to forget that the opening was pretty good by the end of the show. Terrible, just terrible. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
