Former WWE creative team member Seth Mates updated his Newsday blog with a story about why they took the WWE Title off Brock Lesnar. During the story, Mates notes that Hulk Hogan wanted to defeat Lesnar for the title at a Survivor Series pay-per-view.
"The plan had been for Hulk to make his big comeback a few months later, and to challenge Brock for the title at Madison Square Garden for the title at Survivor Series," Mates writes. "It would have been quite an attraction—Hogan going for revenge and the WWE Title in Madison Square Garden. Of course, the swerve was that Brock would win once again.
"A month or so before Survivor Series, however, word got back to us that Hulk actually wanted to win the title in the Garden. Ain't no way that was going to happen, especially after Hogan's failed title run earlier in the year, so we decided to go in another direction—namely, to pair Brock up against Big Show and to turn Brock babyface." Powell’s POV: Mates also offers his thoughts on putting WWE's two World Titles on Big Show and Shawn Michaels on the same show. He also states that the Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle match could have changed pro wrestling had it been booked properly. As always, Seth's blog is an interesting read.
The Hogan story shouldn't really surprise anyone. Lesnar was really taking off at the time, so of course Hogan's ego wanted to beat him.
