The plan at one time was to hold a triple threat match between Triple H, Vladimir Kozlov, and Jeff Hardy at the WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view. The reason Hardy was added to the match was because WWE officials were concerned that a singles match between Hunter and Kozlov would not be entertaining. Hardy was added to make the match better.

However, there was no serious consideration given to putting the WWE Title on Hardy. Rather, the buzz was that the company wanted to protect Kozlov, but not put the title on him. Therefore, it's logical to assume that Hardy would have done the job had they went ahead with the match and not come up with the storyline with Edge entering the match and winning the title belt. That said, Vince McMahon was described as "noncommittal" regarding the finish of the match.

Powell's POV: I was not a fan of the "Hardy found unconscious" storyline, but I don't think they would have done Hardy any favors by having him lose again. I suppose Edge could have interfered to set up the finish, yet there's only so many times you can get Hardy fans excited over the possibility of seeing him win the title only to have him lose the match.
