Comedian turned pro wrestling personality Andy Kaufman is alive, according to claims made by his brother Michael Kaufman at the Andy Kaufman Awards in New York City. Michael introduced a young woman who claimed to be the comedian's daughter, who said her alleged father staged his death to get out of the spotlight.

CNN reached out to WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler for his thoughts. "I would like nothing better than to know that Andy was still alive and been with us all this time," Lawler said. "But like anybody else, I really don't know any more than what I've heard. It could be a great hoax in his honor, dreamed up by his friend Bob Zamuda and his brother, Michael. That would be something that would be in keeping with Andy's tradition, but who's to say. It could really be legit." Read more on the story at CNN.com. [Thanks to Dot Net reader Thomas Herron]

Powell's POV: Kaufman would be 64 years old today if he were actually alive. I assume it's all a publicity stunt and it's clearly working, as the story has been picked up by a number of mainstream outlets. Kaufman died at age 35 in 1984 following a battle with lung cancer. Of course, he had the legendary run in Memphis with Lawler that also included a classic moment in late night television via "Late Night With David Letterman" on NBC. Alive or dead, I think it's time for WWE to induct Kaufman into the celebrity wing of their Hall of Fame.
