TNA house show in Kenansville, N.C.
July 27, 2008
Report by Dot Net reader Shawn Cavender
There were a lot more kids at this show than there were at Against All Odds in Greenville, S.C. in February. I’m not good at estimating the size of crowds, but a third of the floor seats were empty and at least half of the general admission section was empty.
Jeremy Borash emceed the event and revved up the crowd as he always does at TNA live shows, including offering backstage passes to the loudest fans.
1. Petey Williams defeated Kaz in a TNA X-Division Championship match. As one might expect, this was a good athletic opening match. Petey won with the Canadian Destroyer.
2. LAX (Homicide & Hernandez) beat The Rock ‘n’ Rave Infection (Jimmy Rave & Lance Rock) in a TNA World Tag Team Championship match. During the bout, Hernandez did his dive over the top rope. LAX won after Hernandez gave Jimmy Rave a Border Toss.
3. Taylor Wilde defeated Awesome Kong and Jacqueline in a three-way TNA Knockouts Championship match. Kong dominated much of the time over the two smaller ladies. The finish came when Kong took Jackie up for an Awesome Bomb, but Taylor undercut Kong and rolled her up to get the three count. After the match, Kong faked being a good sport, even holding the ropes open for Taylor, but then clotheslined her and delivered an Awesome Bomb.
4. Eric Young & Rhino beat Beer Money (Robert Roode & James Storm) after Rhino hit Storm with a Gore. Before the match, Storm got on the stick and got lots of cheap heat by insulting the fans and the local sports teams. The match started as a singles match between Storm and Young, but after a few minutes Young bailed and said he had a secret partner, Rhino, so the match turned into a tag.
After a 15 minute intermission, Borash if there were any fans in the crowd who were enlisted in the Armed Forces and invited them into the ring. After getting each man’s name and unit, Borash brought a video cameraman into the ring to get a shot of the crowd to air on Spike TV.
Next, Kurt Angle came out and said that even though he had the weekend off, he still wanted to come to the show and thank the TNA fans for their support. He talked about how TNA is seen in over 140 countries now and it’s all thanks to the fans. He said he started watching TNA a year before he left WWE and that he wanted to come to TNA to wrestle guys like Samoa Joe, A.J. Styles, Rhino, Sting, and Christian Cage. Before he left, he again thanked the fans.
5. Abyss beat Tomko in a No DQ Street Fight. This was a pretty tame street fight, which Abyss won with a Black Hole Slam after no-selling a chair shot from Tomko.
6. Samoa Joe defeated Christian Cage in a TNA World Heavyweight Championship match. Joe got on the mic and said he talked to Jim Cornette on the phone and asked for him to fight Booker T tonight, but Cornette told him he’d have to wait for the pay-per-view. So Joe made an open challenge to anyone in the back that had the balls to fight him. Christian came out and also cut a promo, reminding everyone that he’s a two-time world champ and saying that Kenansville would be a great place to win his third world title. Joe and Cage had a nice 10-15 match with plenty of good nearfalls. Joe won by getting Cage to tap out to the Kokina Clutch, after a Muscle Buster. The crowd was pretty evenly split in their support for the two wrestlers.
After the main event, Angle came out to take pictures with fans in the ring for $20, and Borash, Kaz, Homicide, Hernandez, Taylor Wilde, Eric Young, Andrew Thomas, and Earl Hebner signed autographs.
Biggest pops:
1. Kurt Angle
2. Christian Cage
3. Samoa Joe
Most heel heat:
1. James Storm
2. Petey Williams
3. Awesome Kong
