TNA Live Event
Dubuque, Iowa at Five Flags Center
Report courtesy of Adam Martin of Wrestleview.com, which also has photos of the event

TNA Wrestling rolled into the state of Iowa on Saturday night (October 16) for the third event in a four day tour of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. The Five Flags Center itself holds around 4,800 and resembles something of a large gymnasium. Around a half hour before bell time, it appeared roughly 300-400 were in attendance. As the show progressed, the seats filled up, but it was by no means a packed house. I'd estimate anywhere from 900-1,000 in attendance (and that is generous).

Given the market and the arena, I don't think anyone was expecting a sellout crowd in the state of Iowa. Either way, I was very curious to take in the actual experience of a TNA house show event. If this company is trying to win customer service awards then they definitely achieve that. Despite the smaller crowd, they were into literally everything from Don West hard selling merchandise in the ring to Jeremy Borash firing up the crowd over backstage passes.

Borash opened the show teasing backstage passes. We get the usual TNA house show angle where the backstage crew does not want this. Enter Jeff Jarrett who says "not 10 minutes ago did I get off the phone with the immortal Hulk Hogan who said no backstage passes." JB obliges and says while he can't stop Double J, this man can. Enter Samoa Joe who quickly hits the ring and we have our first official match of the night.

1. Samoa Joe defeated Jeff Jarrett. Lasted maybe 10-15 seconds with Joe giving Jarrett a Muscle Buster from the top turnbuckle to make everyone happy. Jarrett bailed and Joe helped pass out some backstage passes.

2. TNA X Division Champion Jay Lethal defeated Douglas Williams. Fun little back and forth match here. Big Bad Doug really played up to the crowd and received some of the biggest heat of the night.

3. TNA Knockouts Champion Madison Rayne defeated Angelina Love. Earl Hebner received his own star entrance before the match to show off his t-shirt. Great reaction for both ladies in this one. Another real fun match with Rayne killing it with her heel persona. She has greatly improved over the last year and is a blast to watch live.

4. Beer Money defeated Eric Young and Orlando Jordan. Easily the best and most fun part of the show. While I don't blame anyone for criticizing Young's gimmick given the current concussion climate we are in, every wrestling promotion needs a good comedy character and Young fits the bill. From locking up with referee Brian Hebner early on to running the ropes on the ring apron, he was very entertaining the entire time. Roode and Storm knew exactly how to play off it as well. Orlando Jordan continues to freak people out with his gimmick and it seems to be catching on. Without question the highlight of the show. Too bad they didn't end with this one.

Intermission: They brought in citizens from Dubuque who were being officially sworn into the U.S. Army. Very cool moment and classy of TNA to do. Don West continued his hard selling of merchandise and fans could line up to get autographs from Earl and Brian Hebner. It sounded like a few wrestlers walked out to sign some autographs as well based on what West was saying over the house mic. By the way, excellent idea to just have West walking around the arena with a mic in hand. Gets everyone's attention.

5. Rhino over Matt Morgan. Surprisingly enough, Rhino received one of the loudest reactions of the entire night. Tons of fans wearing ECW t-shirts and chanting "ECW" during the match. I guess people still really like this stuff. Completely surprised me how those three letters remain relevant to so many wrestling fans in the year 2010. Morgan was also very interactive with the crowd.

6. Tommy Dreamer defeated Abyss in a Monster's Ball match. They were originally advertising Mr. Anderson vs. Abyss for the main event locally. I'd like to point out first and foremost that the crowd was literally into everything these guys did from brawling at ringside to the use of weapons. Some of the things I could hear shouted were: "ECW", "we want blood", "use the tacks", "get out the glass" and the use of the word "hardcore" at almost every moment. Personally, this was a perfect example of why this form of professional wrestling is no longer marketable and only appeals to a VERY small group. While I wasn't a fan, the crowd loved every minute of it.

The main event closed with Mr. Anderson running out and tossing a steel chair at the head of Abyss to setup Dreamer for the win. After the match, Mr. Anderson gave a speech to the crowd and plugged that instead of taking fans backstage, they were bringing the back to the fans. JB plugged that for $20 you and a group of your friends or family could take a picture with Anderson inside the TNA ring.

Bottom line, it was a fun show for the most part. Sounded like many people were disappointed that people like Jeff Hardy (especially now that he is the TNA Champion), Rob Van Dam and AJ Styles were not there. The main event was a huge letdown personally, but what do I know? The crowd in Dubuque loved it. As far as a recommendation: if TNA is within an hour and a half of you or closer, check it out and you will have fun. They do everything they can to make your experience enjoyable and interactive.
