7/16 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Kurt Angle vs. Sting in a six sides of steel match, Beer Money and A.J. Styles vs. The Main Event Mafia, Suicide vs. Chris Sabin
By Rich Twilling Jul 16, 2009 - 10:00 PM |
|
TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, FL
[Q1] Footage aired of last week’s show and the domination by the Main Event Mafia. This week’s show is entitled “On the Road to Victory.” ...
The opening video aired and Mike Tenay introduced the show. A graphic for Kurt Angle vs. Mick Foley at Victory was shown. Mick Foley came out to the ring. Foley cut a babyface promo saying he was going to do whatever he could be regain the World Heavyweight Championship. He said the person who held the title dictated the direction of the company.
Foley asked Kurt Angle to come out to the ring and Angle obliged. Foley reminded Angle he did not tap out last week and he remembered the last time he tapped out back in 1991. Of course, he must have forgotten the “I Quit” match he lost to Ric Flair. He told Kurt he would not tap out. Foley said he would have to be better than he has ever been to beat Angle.
He then asked Angle to leave the Mafia out of the equation on Sunday. Angle said he runs with the Mafia because of what he believes in and ironically, Foley believes in the same things. Sting’s music hit and he came out to call bullshit on everything Angle said. He asked Foley to give him Angle tonight. Angle stopped Foley and replied, “Mick says yes.” He then made it a six sides of steel match...
Twill’s Two Cents: Solid opening segment and especially good mic work by Angle. In fact, this is the best Angle has been on the mic in a long time. Foley was passable as well as he does not always have to be overly passionate. He was just as he should have been. Very nice setup to the rest of the show.
Backstage, Samoa Joe was beating the crap out of Amazing Red. Don West said Red must have done something to Joe because he would not attack him unprovoked. Funny... [C]
[Q2] Back from commercial, Joe was still beating up Amazing red before throwing him into the ring...
1. Amazing Red defeated Samoa Joe by disqualification in :17. Joe hit referee Rudy Charles, who disqualified him. TNA Security came out and Joe willingly left the ring...
Twill’s Two Cents: Not sure what that accomplished since we already know Joe is a badass. Now, had he taken out the security guards, that would have been a solid segment. It wasn’t bad though.
Lauren interviewed Sarita backstage. Sarita gave a very nervous (bland) promo in English and then cut one in Spanish... [C]
Footage aired of the history between Jenna Morasca and Sharmell. Don West then moderated a forum with Sharmell and Sojo Bolt on one side and Jenna, with her trainer Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed on other side. Sharmell called Jenna a “skinny little white chick.” Don instigated things as four of the women had to be separated as Kong sat and looked on...
Twill’s Two Cents: Again, why is Jenna referred to as a “skinny white chick?” Why not just a “skinny chick?” That goes every way and shouldn’t be tolerated. Anyway, solid segment to promote a match not many people want to see. West was funny here.
[Q3] JB interviewed Kurt Angle backstage and pointed out how well he knew Kurt. He wondered why Kurt would agree to a steel cage match tonight three days before facing Foley on Sunday. Kurt said he was the real icon. He then said the Mafia would win “all of the titles” and even JB would be calling him “Boss” by next week...
Twill’s Two Cents: According to Angle, the X-Division and Women’s Championships do not exist.
2. Suicide defeated Chris Sabin (with Alex Shelley) in a non-title match in 4:23. Shelley distracted Suicide early, allowing Sabin to hit a dropkick and take control of the match. Suicide came back for a few moments but Sabin hit an enziguiri for a two count. Sabin went for the Cradle Shock and even though Suicide fought out, Sabin put him in the tree of woe. Suicide fought out and hit the suicide solution for the win...
After the match, the Machine Guns attacked Suicide and used a chair as well. Homicide came down to run off the Guns before they could unmask Suicide. Suicide decided to cash in his briefcase...
3. Homicide defeated Suicide to win the X-Division Championship in :32. Homicide went for the cover and Suicide kicked out. He then hit the Gringo Killer for the win...
Twill’s Two Cents: I could have done without Sabin losing clean to Suicide in four minutes, but I liked the way Homicide cashed in. Of course, in WWE, the briefcase seems to always be in play, while in TNA, I cannot even remember the event Homicide won the briefcase at. Remember, Curry Man won the “fired” briefcase at that same event.
The Beautiful People made their way through the backstage area and Angelina Love was wearing what looked to be a radiation suit... [C]
[Q4] Homicide was interviewed by Lauren backstage. He cut a basic promo about winning the belt and sexually harassed Lauren...
TBP came out to the ring and Angelina was wearing a pink and white beekeeper suit. Angelina said her match vs. Tara was unofficial but they would face again this Sunday. Tara came out and said she was the new champion. She also said she put her tarantula in Love’s suit. Angelina freaked out and Tara hit her with the Widow’s Peak...
A short Sarita video aired... [C]
4. Sarita defeated Alissa Flash in 4:44. Flash stopped and whispered something to David Penzer. Penzer then announced Flash wanting to be referred to as a “future legend.” Flash spit her gum in Sarita’s face as the match started.
[Q5] Sarita hit a nice suicide dive to Flash on the floor. Flash took over and rolled Sarita back into the ring. The announcers made a great point of both women making their debut on Impact, but Sarita getting all of the attention.
Flash scored about four or five nearfalls with a series of impressive holds but Sarita scored the win with a Victory Roll she stood up on. After the match they extended their hands but Flash hit a modified Michinoku Driver... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: They certainly squeezed about ten to twelve minutes into five, but I was very impressed with both women. West said he could see both of these women in the title picture sooner rather than later and I agree. Nice debut for both women.
Lauren interviewed A.J. Styles backstage and pointed out everything going wrong in his life, including Samoa Joe, teaming with Beer Money, and facing Kevin Nash at the pay-per-view. Styles said it was not about the money and he would wrestle for free. He told Nash he will cash his last check at Victory Road...
Twill’s Two Cents: I bet it is a big check.
[Q6] 5. Kevin Nash (with Jenna Morasca), Scott Steiner, and Booker T (with Sharmell) defeated Beer Money Inc. and A.J. Styles in an elimination six man tag in 14:50. West called out Styles for saying he would wrestle for free. Good point; nobody would wrestle for free. Styles had Nash pinned after a springboard elbow, but Booker and Steiner broke it up. Nash then eliminated Styles with a powerbomb...
Kevin Nash pinned A.J. Styles at 2:14.
Twill’s Two Cents: What the hell?
The heels isolated Roode, but James Storm tagged in and hit Steiner with a series of moves. Nash broke up a pinfall attempt. Steiner then pinned James Storm while there was chaos going on outside of the ring...
Scott Steiner pinned James Storm at 5:19.
Robert Roode looked on as he realized the odds were heavily against him... [C]
Roode worked over Booker (remember that feud?) coming back from commercial. Booker hit the bookend but pulled Roode up before the three count. Steiner hit his belly to belly and tried to pin Roode with one finger, but Roode kicked out. With Nash in the ring, Roode hit a low blow (I guess it is legal) and pinned Nash...
Robert Roode pinned Kevin Nash at 11:25.
Nash stayed at ringside and James Storm headed down with a chair. Matt Morgan, who went to the Shawn Michaels store of female tank tops, attacked him from behind. Roode hit the payoff on Booker but Sharmell distracted the referee. Booker and Steiner won with a Hart Foundation-like finishing move with Steiner holding Roode up for a leg lariat...
After the match, Sharmell and Jenna started fighting again... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: This match seemed to be an avenue to position Beer Money as sympathetic babyfaces and if that was the case, they succeeded. Roode showed a lot of heart trying to fight off the Mafia and Storm before that had a couple of hot tag sequences. I’m not sure why the hell Nash pinned Styles clean in the first couple minutes of the match. It looked odd because Styles looked like he sort of kicked out.
[Q7] JB interviewed Team 3D backstage but not before promoting the TNA Twitter page. Go sign up now. I’ll wait... Welcome back. Brother Devon said the British Invasion lacked respect and class. He said Beer Money had the same problem until Team 3D took them to school. The Invasion interrupted the interview and said Mick Foley put the New Japan tag team titles on the line. Team 3D attacked the Invasion...
Twill’s Two Cents: Another good promo by Team 3D and I like the titles being on the line. Not sure how Mick Foley has the power to put the New Japan tag titles on the line, but oh well.
Tenay and West ran down the Victory Road card...
Backstage, Lauren reluctantly interviewed Abyss. This girl deserves to be the employee of the year for the shit she puts up with. Abyss started sticking thumbtacks into his arm. He said he didn’t need Stevie’s therapy anymore...
Twill’s Two Cents: So, that is how you land the ladies, by putting thumbtacks into your body. Imagine approaching a girl at a bar and in lieu of buying her a drink, you say, “Hey baby, check this out” and you proceed to turn yourself into a pincushion. Imagine how many girls will go home with you then!
Jeff Jarrett made his way through the backstage area... [C]
[Q8] Jeff Jarrett came out to the announce table and Don West kissed his ass. Jarrett said West was treading on thin ice and he might just fall in...
6. Kurt Angle vs. Sting in a six sides of steel match ended in a no-contest in 11:22. Sting impressed early during a chain wrestling sequence. Jarrett made a point about Sunday and West said, “Great observation.” Jarrett responded with, “Shut up West, I’m sick of your smart ass.” Funny. Not sure why, but Tenay ran through each pay-per-view match and Jarrett gave his thoughts. Oh yeah, the match in the cage was going on too. Angle slammed Sting into the cage as the show went to commercial... [C]
Angle continued to drive Sting’s face into the side of the cage. Jarrett put over both Sting and Angle during the match. Jarrett mentioned the Front Line (remember them?) and was not sure if this battle (young guys vs. established guys) was winnable. Sting reversed an Angle Slam with an armdrag. Sting locked in the Scorpion Death Lock. Samoa Joe attacked Jeff Jarrett and then threw Rudy Charles into the steps to get the cage key.
Twill’s Two Cents: Nice knowing you Rudy.
Sting was ready for Joe and locked him in the Death Lock. Then Taz’s (oops) music and video played (but he did not appear) and the lights briefly went out. When they came back on, Joe had Sting locked in the rear naked choke. Jarrett and Mick Foley tried to climb the cage but Angle prevented it. The Mafia attacked Jarrett and Foley to end the show as Sting’s bloody mouth was the final shot of the show...
Twill’s Two Cents: Nice match that was more about storyline development and hyping the pay-per-view. Usually a cage match on the go home show before a pay-per-view is backwards booking, but it worked here. The show did a nice job promoting the Victory Road show.
What did you think of the show? Feel free to send me your thoughts to dotnetrich@gmail.com. I’ll be back tomorrow morning with the Impact Hitlist.
