7/9 Powell's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Three title matches, Suicide speaks, Kevin Nash and Matt Morgan vs. A.J. Styles and Daniels, Homicide vs. Doug Williams in a ladder match
By Jason Powell Jul 9, 2009 - 08:00 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, Fla.

[Q1] Highlights aired from last week's show... The opening video aired... Mike Tenay and Don West introduced the show...

Mick Foley came to the ring with his nose bandaged. He said that after Jeff Jarrett hit him with a guitar last week, he's decided that TNA can't have two authority figures. He called out Jarrett and said this would be a good time for one of them to step down. Jarrett came out sporting a bandage on his head and joined Foley in the ring.

Jarrett said he and Foley could fix the Main Event Mafia problem together, but not if they take control of all the titles. Foley conceded that it was foolish of him to say that he would only defend the TNA Title once per year. Foley said his oldest son pointed out that he's hit Jeff several times. Foley said he's hit Jeff six or seven times and Jarrett returned fire once, so he figures they're event. Funny.

Foley said he doesn't have anything to prove to Jarrett or the fans, but he has something to prove to himself at Victory Road. He said he needs to prove it against Kurt Angle, who he referred to as the greatest wrestler in the world today. Foley proposed a non-title match between Angle and Jarrett. Jeff proposed they turn the match into a three-way dance with Angle vs. Foley vs. Jarrett.

Foley said he didn't want people to think they were in cahoots, so he proposed the idea of letting Kurt Angle select a special referee. Jarrett said he was cool with the special referee idea, but it can't be anyone from the Main Event Mafia or Matt Morgan. Foley agreed and they shook hands...

Powell's POV: I guess it was three champions in action and not three title matches. Brutus Magnus spoke about how they are dangerous alone and are even stronger as a tag team. Generic promo...

Backstage, Lauren interviewed The British Invasion regarding Doug Williams's ladder match against Homicide. It's for the briefcase that Homicide won that contains an X Division Title match contract inside...

[Q2] [C] 1. Homicide defeated Doug Williams (w/Brutus Magnus, Rob Terry) in a ladder match in 2:05. Tenay said Homicide has been out "due to personal reasons relating to the death of his father." Homicide dumped Williams to ringside. He started to climb the ladder. Williams was on his way back to break it up when Team 3D ran out and attacked him. Homicide grabbed the briefcase and won the match.

Afterward, Sheik Abdul Bashir and Kiyoshi ran out and helped beatdown Team 3D. Apparently, Homicide just took off in the middle of all this and din't help Team 3D because he was nowhere to be found... A Mick Foley "I Will Become" video aired... [C]

Powell's POV: They've killed the ladder match as a gimmick on Impact. They seem to have them every few weeks now and they never last more than a couple minutes. I don't get it.

At ringside, Tenay said the gimmick with Angle selecting the referee "gets more intriguing by the minute." He didn't say why. They hyped Velvet Sky vs. Tara, Beer Money vs. Motor City Machine Guns, and the Nash and Morgan vs. Daniels and Styles match for later in the show...

A pre-taped sitdown interview with Suicide aired. Tenay said he was told that Suicide wrote the lyrics to his own entrance theme. Suicide used a deep and raspy voice. He said he was left to choose between life and death. Tenay asked him about additional lines from the song. He asked how Suicide comes alive. Suicide says he sees the light and chooses to come alive. "I am the dark savior," he said. "Suicide does not represent the end. Suicide represents the beginning"...

Powell's POV: I know the message they're trying to send, but it can still be misinterpreted. It's just a bad name for a character, especially one that caters to kids.

[Q3] [C] Highlights aired from last week of Sting saving A.J. Styles from a Main Event Mafia attack... Sting came to the ring with the TNA Title. He said that if Kurt Angle wants his title, he could come and get it. First, though, he wanted to talk to Samoe Joe, who came out and joined Sting in the ring.

West said we'll finally get to meet the adviser that Joe has been listening to at the Victory Road pay-per-view. Sting said Joe wants everything, but he's not willing to work for it. He said Joe took a payoff at his expense, which was a mistake. Sting said he'll continue to fight until things are made right. "You pissed me off bad now, Joe," Sting said.

Joe looked Sting in the eye for the first time. Sting challenged him to do something about it. He asked what or who is stopping him. Joe said he's been instructed to keep his temper. "But your time will come," Joe said. Sting questioned who is in Joe's head. Sting said Joe isn't capable of doing this on his own. He said he wants to know who is pulling the strings.

Joe said Sting would find out at Victory Road. Sting said he's going into the darkness to find the person. He said he'd drag him to the ring and beat him. Sting left the ring while Joe stood there and smiled... [C]

Powell's POV: Good segment. Sting was intense during the promo and came across like he truly cares about the identity of the mystery man. Joe also displayed good, quiet intensity. Good hype all around for the mystery man who will debut at the pay-per-view. Here's hoping they go with Taz even though the internet crowd has figured it out. It's a logical move and I'd hate to see them over think this one and go with someone else just to swerve everybody.

[Q4] Backstage, Lauren interviewed Jenna Morasca, who said she won a million dollars on Survivor, invested that money, and made millions more. She said she hired a trainer with some of that money to help her prepare for her match with Sharmell. Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed walked into the picture. They walked out together. Lauren said it's supposed to be Sharmell vs. Jenna, not Kong...

Scott Steiner and Booker T joined the announcers on commentary. West heeled it up, as he's been doing all show, by buddying up to them...

2. Beer Money beat The Motor City Machine Guns in a non-title match in 4:00. Early in the match, Roode got caught in the ring as the illegal man. He hip-tossed Storm into their corner, stepped out, and tagged himself into the match. Funny. Booker broke into his Black Snow voice and distracted from the action. Beer Money hit their DWI finish on Alex Shelley for the clean pin...

Powell's POV: The Guns belong in the tag title picture, but TNA just refuses to push them in a meaningful manner. Frustrating.

Backstage, Angelina Love threw a hissy fit about the spider that Tara's been carrying around. Velvet Sky took offense while Madison Rayne just stood there. Sky got in Love's face and said it's not all about Angelina. She said Love either has her back during her match against Tara or they're finished. After Sky stormed off, Love said the spider crawled up Velvet's butt last week... [C]

Powell's POV: Nice followup from last week when Love ran away in fear of the tarantula that Tara placed on Velvet. Poor Madison just stands there and never gets to say anything. I assume that's leading to something, though.

Tenay introduced a video of Sarita, who debuts next week... Ring introductions for the Velvet Sky vs. Tara match took place. As Velvet was bending over, the camera man reached out and touched her ass. Don West complained and said it was sexual harassment...

[Q5] 3. Tara pinned Velvet Sky (w/Angelina Love, Madison Rayne) in 2:35. Tara brought her tarantula to the ring with her. Velvet got plenty of offense, but Tara finished her off with the Widow's Peak. After the match, Tara took the tarantula out and stood over Velvet.

Angelina took the mic and begrudgingly challenged Tara, who took the mic and said it wouldn't be a problem as long as the TNA Knockouts Title is on the line. Madison pleaded with Love to say yes. Angelina agreed to the match. Tenay said the match would take place after the break...

Powell's POV: Velvet has improved in the ring. Of course, working with Tara is going to make anyone look better, but Velvet looks more comfortable in the ring than she has in the past. I hope she continues to improve because she's a great on-air personality. Nice cliffhanger for the commercial break. It would have been better to save the match for next week, hyping it properly, and hoping it would pop a rating.

4. Tara defeated Angelina Love to win the TNA Knockouts Title in 4:05. Tara went for three quick rollups on Love, who escaped each and slid out of the ring. Roughly a minute into the match, referee Rudy Charles sent Madison to the back for interfering. The announcers noted that Velvet Sky had already been helped backstage following her match.

The crowd chanted Tara's name as Love took advantage of Rayne's interference by taking control of the match. Love scored a couple nearfalls and then threw a tantrum because she didn't get the pin. Tara came back and hit the Widow's Peak for the 1-2-3. Tara sold the finish nicely by getting emotional while holding the belt...

Powell's POV: Wow, they really rushed that. I don't understand why they didn't build up the match for at least a week. Tara in chase mode would have been a lot of fun. Are they rushing through this program to get to Tara vs. Kong? Even if that's the plan, I'd rather see Tara in chase mode. The match was solid and the live crowd loved it, but TNA has to know that they could have gotten so much more out of the title change had they only promoted the title match ahead of time.

[Q6] [C] The announcers ran through the Victory Road lineup: Sharmell vs. Jenna Morasca, Matt Morgan vs. Daniels, Beer Money vs. Steiner and Booker for the tag titles, A.J. Styles vs. Kevin Nash for the TNA Legends Title, Samoa Joe vs. Sting, and Kurt Angle vs. Mick Foley for the TNA Title...

Highlights aired from "earlier in the week" of Abyss going to Dr. Stevie's office. Stevie came out calm and thanked Abyss for coming. Abyss attacked him and yelled, "I'm going to kill you." Abyss started twitching and rolled onto a couch in the office. Stevie said he put a drug in Abyss's water that causes neuromuscular issues. He said Abyss could breathe, but he couldn't move a muscle. Stevie slapped him a couple times. Stevie slammed a glass over Abyss's head... [C]

Powell's POV: WTF? Call me crazy, but I actually get a kick out of the weird Abyss and Dr. Stevie saga.

Ring introductions for the next match took place...

[Q7] 5. A.J. Styles and Daniels defeated Matt Morgan and Kevin Nash in 6:25. Fun spots late in the match. A.J. flipped out of Morgan's chokeslam attempt and followed up with the Pele kick. A.J. and Daniels hit their finishers on Morgan for the win. Afterward, Nash attacked Styles with a chair. Morgan wrapped Daniels's leg in a chair and stomped on it... [C]

Powell's POV: Solid television match that set up two pay-per-view matches. I can't say I'm very excited about either pay-per-view match, but the post-match attacks were well done.

Outside the building, Lauren updated viewers on Sting's search for the mystery man. Sting was walking with a towel over his head when a car approached. He grabbed the driver, but Joe showed up and choked out Sting from behind...

Eric Young came out to serve as the special referee of the main event three-way. Ring introductions for the match took place. West praised Angle's call in making Young the special referee...

Powell's POV: Not the most exciting choice for a referee, but a logical one at least given the storyline tension between Young and Jarrett.

[Q8] 5. Kurt Angle defeated Jeff Jarrett and Mick Foley in a three-way non-title match in 9:55. Angle came out without the belt and didn't look happy about it. Foley and Jarrett worked as a unit early. Jarrett stood on the second rope and punched Angle repeatedly, but Young pulled him down. Tenay said Styles took Daniels to the hospital for further treatment on his injured ankle.

Jarrett and Angle fought at ringside. Foley got his shots in on Angle. Jarrett snuck up behind Foley and took a shot at him. jarrett hit The Stroke on Foley onto the ring steps. West, who said earlier that Jarrett had a plan, was quick to tell viewers he told them so. [C]

After the break, Jarrett hit The Stroke on Angle and had him pinned. However, Young stopped the count at two and wouldn't count the pin. Foley recovered and went back in the ring. Jarrett picked up his guitar and chased Young away. Foley applied the mandible claw on Jarrett. Young tossed the guitar out of the ring.

Angle had Foley pinned, but Jarrett broke it up. A short time later, Angle applied the Ankle Lock. Foley yelled, "No, no, no." Young called for the bell and claimed Foley had given up even though he had not. The bell rang to end the match. Jarrett went after Young and ran him out of the ring.

Foley roughed up Angle and applied the mandible claw. Samoa Joe ran out with the TNA Title belt and attacked Foley. Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash, and Booker T came out with barbwire. They wrapped Foley in the wire and then beat him with a barbwire baseball bat. The former Main Event Mafia security ran out to help Foley, but they were quickly beaten down. Angle held the belt over his head to close the show...

Powell's POV: An Empire Strikes Back-like edition of the show with the heels getting good heat tonight. The main event is another example of a match that could have been hyped a week out. I guess they're going for the "tune in because you don't know what you might miss" vibe. I still believe promoting matches a week out is a better way of doing business, but that's just me. Overall, a solid show that made most of the heels look like heels rather than the comedy figures many had been playing.

Thanks for watching along with us during the four-hour marathon tonight. Rich Twilling will be by tomorrow with Hitlists covering ECW, WWE Superstars, and tonight's TNA Imapct show.
