3/26 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Sting and Mick Foley go face to face, 20 man steel cage gauntlet match to determine captains for Lethal Lockdown, Suicide vs. Kiyoshi
By Rich Twilling Mar 26, 2009 - 10:00 PM |
|
TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, FL
[Q1] The steel cage gauntlet match was plugged. The voiceover guy said not to change the channel. The title of tonight’s show is “Captains-cage-chaos!” The opening video aired and Mike Tenay welcomed us to the show. Many wrestlers were standing in the aisle and Jim Cornette stood mid-ring...
Twill’s Two Cents: Number two in command is back to work reviewing TV tonight. I hope TNA brings it.
Cornette said one half of the main event at Lockdown would be Sting vs. Mick Foley for the TNA Championship. He then explained the rules of the Lethal Lockdown match and the importance of being the team captain. The last two men remaining tonight in the cage match will be the team captains...
The music of the Main Event Mafia hit. Kurt Angle, Booker T, Kevin Nash, and Scott Steiner walked through the wrestlers (including past AJ Styles) and to the ring. Angle said with the Mafia in the match, no one else had a chance. Angle said he was the captain tonight and after he won, he would pick the Mafia for his team. He said the MEM would dominate all of the jabronis throughout 2010.
Jeff Jarrett’s music hit and he came out to the ring to confront Angle. He told Kurt he was in the match tonight to prevent Angle from becoming a team captain. He told him to choke on that, “Slapnut,” and he attacked him. Wrestlers and security pulled them apart. Don West said Jarrett put his nose where it didn’t belong... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Glad to see Don West remembered he was a heel announcer. Solid opening segment that set the table for the rest of the night.
In case you missed it, they replayed Jarrett’s involvement in the opening segment. Tenay and West called the cage match tonight one of the most important in the history of Impact...
[Q2] Jeremy Borash was backstage with the Mafia. Angle instructed Kevin Nash to take Jenna Morasca away. Steiner asked Nash to “save some of that for me after you hit it.” Nice. Angle said he was going to take Steiner’s pipe and stick it up Jarrett’s ass...
1. Suicide defeated Kiyoshi (with No Limit) to retain the X Division Championship in 3:58. Tenay wondered out loud why Jenna Morasca was in the locker room of the MEM. West said Nash did not get the name “Big Sexy” for being a boy scout. The match started quickly with Kiyoshi hitting an overhead belly to belly suplex for the first nearfall.
Suicide hit a series of kicks and scored a nearfall with a spike DDT. The finish came when Suicide threw Kiyoshi into Team No Limit on the apron and hit the Suicide Solution for the win...
Twill’s Two Cents: Fast paced, fun match that really did not do much to establish either guy. It was there and then it was over.
Backstage, Kurt Angle saw a picture of Jeff Jarrett on the wall and hit it with the pipe... [C]
During the break, Angle tried to crash Jarrett’s office, but LAX, Eric Young, and Lethal Consequences were standing in the way...
Lauren interviewed the Beautiful People and Madison Rayne. Love said they were not sweating Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed tonight because they don’t sweat at all. Velvet told Madison the hazing would continue tonight. Velvet told Kong that she would be their next victim... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Now that I am single again, can I profess my love of Velvet Sky again? Kidding. Decent promo from the Beautiful People that put over their desire to be Knockouts Champion.
[Q3] A Rough Cuts segment aired for Brother Ray. Ray talked about his training and how he still resents the man who trained him. He made a point that he is in the business to be one half of the best tag team in history...
Tenay conducted an interview with Team 3D and their IWGP tag titles and Beer Money with their TNA tag titles. They talked about the significance of wrestling for all of the titles in Philadelphia. Beer Money said a victory would propel them above the Steiners, the Road Warriors, and above Team 3D. Ray instructed Beer Money what Taz used to say, “Beat us if you can, survive if the fans in Philly let you.” ...
Twill’s Two Cents: Awesome interview segment that put over the respect for the tag team division and titles.
Video aired of Destination X with a focus on the Mick Foley vs. Sting confrontation. Lauren interviewed Sting, in is MEM jumpsuit, backstage. Sting warned Foley that he would come to the ring armed and ready... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: Short, but telling promo by Sting. He is still on the fence and I am enjoying his character more now than I ever have.
Lauren received a response from Foley. Foley joked about The Bachelor but then said he admitted he was wrong. He said they would make up and hug. There would be no need for violence tonight...
[Q4] 2. The Beautiful People (with Madison Rayne) defeated Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed in 3:41. Love locked up with Kong and Kong took care of both members of TBP. Sky took a chokeslam. Saeed scored a nearfall after a series of impressive moves on Love. Love changed her fortunes quickly and hit the Lights Out for the win...
After the match, they tried to cut Kong’s hair, but Kong powered her way out...
Twill’s Two Cents: The women looked good here and the announcers talked about Sting and Mick Foley. Good tag team match with the women that prolonged this program.
Sting and Mick Foley were shown walking in split screen. Sting was serious and Foley was happy go lucky... [C]
Back from commercial, Sting came out to the ring without face paint to a face reaction. Sting called out Foley and he obliged. Foley said what happened was a mistake. Foley humorously explained why he hit Sting with a chair last week. Sting said he was trying to protect Foley. He said he used to respect Foley but he is now getting pissed off.
[Q5] Foley’s tone took a heel direction and he asked Sting who the hell he thought he was. He said no one was “talking about that other wrestling show” in April, they were talking about Lockdown. They were talking about icon vs. legend. Foley said they were not going to relive history, they were going to make history. Foley said as far as the big dives off of the cage, he still had a couple left. “Bang bang. Bang bang.” ...
Twill’s Two Cents: Awesome. Foley was on his game here as we know he is at his best when he has a screw loose. I am looking forward to this title match and Foley has officially made himself relevant again.
Abyss and AJ Styles were show split screen because they are the first two entrants in the gauntlet match... [C]
3. Kurt Angle and Samoa Joe won the right to become captains at Lethal Lockdown in a 20 man gauntlet steel cage match in 43:38. Abyss and AJ started the match. This is going to be a mess; a gauntlet match with 20 people? This could take the rest of the show. A new competitor will come into the match every two minutes. Alex Shelley was number three.
Abyss had his way early with both Styles and Shelley. Eliminations come by pinfall or submission. Jay Lethal came in at number four. With Styles and Abyss down, Lethal and Shelley exchanged some impressive offense... [C]
[Q6] Back from commercial, Matt Morgan came out to the ring at number six and Chris Sabin was out at number five during the break. Morgan impressed by slamming both Shelley and Lethal into the side of the cage. After an interaction with Styles, Abyss hit the Blackhole Slam on Morgan for the first elimination.
Matt Morgan eliminated by Abyss.
Homicide came out at number seven as Don West continued to pimp the MEM and the fact that they were not out yet. He also was “surprised” that Jeff Jarrett had not came out yet. Tenay made a nice point about if Jarrett was conspiring to come out late, why did he not send out the Mafia at the beginning? Steiner was the next man to come out to the ring... [C]
By the way, The Godfather Part II the video game is coming out. Save your money on Legends of WrestleMania and get this game instead...
[Q7] During the break, Homicide was eliminated by Chris Sabin. Rhino came in at number ten. Jeff Jarrett came out next and Kurt Angle attacked him before he got to the ring. Don West verbally jacked Angle off. Angle draped Jarrett’s arm over the guardrail and hit it with a chair. Jarrett is done.
The match continued as medics tended to Jarrett. The Machine Guns worked as a team in the ring and looked very impressive. Lethal pinned Alex Shelley.
Alex Shelley eliminated by Jay Lethal.
Kurt Angle was out next and he attacked Jarrett on his way to the ring. He immediately locked in the ankle lock on Consequences Creed. He then pinned Chris Sabin and Jay Lethal... [C]
Consequences Creed, Chris Sabin, and Jay Lethal eliminated by Kurt Angle.
Shane Sewell was in the ring when we came back from break, but Angle took care of him.
Shane Sewell eliminated by Kurt Angle.
[Q8] Sheik Abdul Bashir came out next and went right after Rhino. AJ almost scored a pin on Angle with a rollup. West said Jarrett was out of the picture, so we all know he’ll be back. Booker T came out next as Scott Steiner motioned for him to help out with Styles. Booker hit the Bookend on Styles for the anticlimactic three count.
AJ Styles eliminated by Booker T.
Booker paid too much attention to Styles and Rhino hit him with a Gore for the pin.
Booker T eliminated by Rhino.
The announcers put over Abyss still being in the match despite being the first entrant. The action slowed down considerably as the ring emptied. Bashir thought he was cool with the Mafia, but Angle hit him with an Olympic Slam for the pin.
Sheik Abdul Bashir eliminated by Kurt Angle.
Abyss was double teamed by Steiner and Angle, who participated in a tandem pinfall.
Abyss eliminated by Scott Steiner and Kurt Angle.
Angle hit an Olympic Slam on Eric Young.
Eric Young eliminated by Kurt Angle.
Angle hit the Olympic Slam on Rhino and eliminated him. Eliminations started happening quickly and Steiner and Angle were remaining. They pretended to lay down for each other to mock the process. Hernandez came out next to a two on one situation. He tried a Border Toss on Steiner, but Angle stepped in and hit an Olympic Slam.
Hernandez eliminated by Kurt Angle.
The last entrant came out and it turned out to be Jeff Jarrett. He came in and attacked both Steiner and Angle but quickly became the victim of a double team. He hit the Stroke on Steiner and pinned him.
Scott Steiner eliminated by Jeff Jarrett.
Jarrett hit the Stroke on Angle but Steiner broke up the pinfall. He then suplexed Jarrett, allowing Angle to pin him.
Jeff Jarrett eliminated by Kurt Angle.
The announcers said Angle was now one of the captains. Samoa Joe came to the ring and quickly hit the Muscle Buster on Angle to pin him. He was announced as the second captain at Lockdown...
West went nuts and said Angle was cheated... [C]
Twill’s Two Cents: That was a fun, Royal Rumble like match that made no sense. If they were looking for two captains and Angle was the last man remaining, why did Joe have to pin him to get a captain’s spot? Shouldn’t he have won by default? Regardless, it was a fun match as that format is always intriguing.
Back from commercial, the announcers critiqued the replay and Jim Cornette joined the announce booth. He said Jarrett was allowed back in the match because he never had the chance to enter the match in the first place...
Backstage, Angle asked how many times he needed to eliminate Jarrett from the match. He said the Mafia would never die and they would end the careers of both Jeff Jarrett and Samoa Joe at Lockdown...
Lauren interviewed Samoa Joe, who was sitting up against a wall brandishing his huge blade. He said he was not interested in being a captain. When asked who the captain would be, he said it was not his concern and that he was simply in TNA to take out every member of the Main Event Mafia...
Twill’s Two Cents: This was a good show by TNA standards. The closing angle provided a hook to tune in next week and it is interesting to see where they go from here. Hopefully they start to tie up some loose ends, but all in all, there seems to be some focus, at least on the top programs.
