1/24 TNA Impact: Joe wants more money than Angle, Tomko goes solo, Lesnar video airs
By Jason Powell Jan 25, 2008 - 03:46 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Orlando, Fla.

[Q1] Highlights aired from last week’s broadcast... Jim Cornette held a locker room meeting. He said management is upset with the Samoa Joe ruling from last week and he’s taking the heat for it even though it was the referee’s call. Cornette booked Black Machismo vs. Johnny Devine in a street fight for the X Division Title, and A.J. Styles and Tomko vs. The Motor City Machine Guns for the tag titles. Brother Ray bitched to Cornette about not being included in the tag title match. Cornette said the match would be a three-way as long as Team 3D promised it would be a hell of a match and didn’t bother him...

Powell’s POV: I don’t care for Cornette’s character. I haven’t seen anyone so concerned by what “management” thinks since HBO canceled “Carnivale.” His character is so easily flustered that that he’s not even likable. Then again, I’m not sure whether we’re supposed to like or respect Cornette’s character. After all, his sidekick Matt Morgan is portrayed as just another TNA comedy heel.

Kevin Nash came to the ring and said Cornette could rectify the problem with Joe and let Nash talk to him or he could sit back and do nothing, but deal with an angry Joe the rest of the night. Matt Morgan came out and referred to Nash as “Grandaddy Cool.” Nash took in Morgan’s boasts about being bigger and badder, then grabbed him by the throat and told Morgan not to disrespect him. Nash started to leave when Morgan attacked him from behind. Joe made the save and said Cornette “will never forget the name Samoa Joe”... Backstage, Angle tried to convince A.J. to talk Tomko into having a meeting. Karen ushered Kurt and Jeremy Borash out of the room so that she could work her magic on Styles. It worked in record time... [C]

[Q2] Crystal interviewed Christian, who said he respects Tomko for becoming his own man. Christian mockingly wished Kurt luck in having a meeting with Tomko...

1. Robert Roode and James Storm (w/Jamie Moore, Payton Banks) vs. Eric Young and The Guru in 3:00. Banks died her hair black and is now wearing glasses in an attempt to look like Ms. Brooks. If only she could trade breasts with Jackie Moore to really complete the look. Roode hit the Payoff on Guru for the win. After the match, Ms. Brooks ran out and attacked Banks.

Powell’s POV: Shouldn’t Tracii just move on with her life now that she’s finally out of her abusive relationship? It’s as if she’s jealous of Banks when she should pity her.

Backstage, Booker blew off Crystal when she tried to ask for an update on Sharmell’s condition... [C]

[Q3] Jeremy Borash named Black Machismo the X Division Wrestler of the Year (as voted by readers of TNA.com). So Cal Val presented him with a trophy and kissed his check. Machismo took off his bandana and shades and talked in a normal voice. He said he lost his smile because of the behavior of Team 3D. He vowed to beat Devine in the street fight...

Powell’s POV: Is he Jay Lethal again?

Backstage, Crystal interviewed Black Reign. Samoa Joe stormed through and knocked Reign out. Kaz entered the scene, grabbed a tool, and took Reign’s wig... [C]

2. Shark Boy beat Elix Skipper at 2:07. Shark Boy wore a black vest and swaggered to the ring like Steve Austin. He mimicked Austin’s mannerisms throughout the match and hit the Stunner for the win. After the match, Shark Boy cut an Austin-like promo. “And that’s the fishing line because Shark Boy said so,” he concluded before drinking clam juice. He Stone Cold impersonation was much better last week. Good for a chuckle, but this will get really old in a hurry for most people...

[Q4] [C] Borash introduced Gail Kim as the 2007 TNA Knockout of the Year. She established that she is battling a concussion and then referred to Awesome Kong as a disgrace. She explained that Kong is more concerned with injuring her opponents than anything. Kong came out with the mystery woman, whom the announcers referred to as Saed. Kong got the better of Kim so ODB ran out and made the save. ODB hit a few drop kicks and sent Kong to ringside... Backstage, Angle promised Tomko all of the perks that A.J. receives if he chooses to join the Angle Alliance. Angle promised him cars, cash, and Karen. Tomko passed. Angle reminded him that he was passing on Karen, “not some woman you picked up at a strip joint.” Tomko snapped and rammed Angle’s head into a locker... [C] Tomko and Angle brawled their way into the arena. Angle got free and made a comment about Tomko’s stripper wife. Tomko snapped and the brawl continued... Backstage, Team 3D and Johnny Devine cut a promo...

[Q5] 3. Johnny Devine beat Jay Lethal in a street fight in 6:00 to win the X Division Title. Lethal didn’t play up the Machismo element of his gimmick. Lethal DDT’d Devine onto a chair before the break. [C] Brother Ray ran in and attacked Lethal with a kendo stick and threw Devine on top of him for the pin. After the match, Samoa Joe ran out and attacked Devine... Video footage aired of Mike Tenay interviewing Abyss, who admitted that James Mitchell is his father...

Powell’s POV: Apparently, there’s an unwritten rule in wrestling that only one cruiserweight wrestler is allowed to borrow the gimmick of a legend. Now that Shark Boy is Stone Cold, that means Lethal can’t be Macho.

[Q6] [C] Borash and former NBA player Kendall Gill hyped “Pros vs. Joes” and then presented Booker T with a trophy for the “most memorable moment in 2007.” Booker accepted the trophy and said his focus is on Sharmell right now and not on wrestling. Roode appeared on the big screen and mocked Booker. “Give Sharmell my best,” Roode concluded.

4. Tiger Mask and Curry Man beat The Rock-n-Roll Infection (w/Christy Hemme) in 5:00. Before the match, Jimmy Rave and Lance Hoyt brought Guitar Hero guitars to the ring with them. Hemme performed a mic check and yelled a lot. Awful. During the match, Tenay hyped that Awesome Kong will grant her first interview next week. Guitar Hero guitars and a guy wrestling with a plate of curry on his head. No, really. It’s actually Chris Daniels’ old Japanese gimmick. Curry Man was energetic, but American viewers needed something more than Tenay pointing out that the gimmick spawned from a Japanese cartoon character to appreciate it. Tiger Mask pinned Rave to win the match...

[Q7] [C] Highlights aired of Brock Lesnar working out for his UFC debut. Lesnar doesn’t look nearly as cut as he did in WWE. He’s still as big as ever, but he’s not as defined. Comments also aired of Kurt Angle referring to Brock as “the real deal”... Borash introduced Samoa Joe as the MVP of 2007. Joe came to the ring and asked if he’s the MVP, why hasn’t he received his title shot. Borash reminded Joe that he had a shot a couple months ago and he was unable to win the title. Joe said that was the right answer, but not on this night. Joe clotheslined Borash. Cornette ran out and tried to calm Joe down. Joe broke the trophy by slamming it onto the mat. Nash ran out and got Joe to calm down. Cornette admitted Joe was screwed. He asked Joe to ref the Christian vs. Angle match and then take on the winner at the next pay-per-view. Joe checked with Nash and turned down the match. He said he wants a five-year contract that guarantees him more pay than Angle. Cornette eventually said he’d have it next week... Backstage, Tomko warned Styles to stop defending Angle or there would be problems between the two of them... Ring introductions took place for the main event. Tomko rolled his eyes when Styles was accompanied by Karen...

[Q8] [C] 5. Tomko and A.J. Styles beat Team 3D and The Motor City Machine Guns to retain the TNA Tag Titles. Early in the match, Brother Ray shoved A.J. into Karen at ringside. Styles carried Karen to the back, leaving Tomko to fight by himself. [C] The Machine Guns took control on Devon late, but Brother Ray stopped their momentum by hitting them both with clotheslines. Tomko hit Ray with a big boot, clotheslined Devon, and scored the pin. After the match, A.J. ran out and tried to hug Tomko, who shoved Styles to the mat. The camera cut to Christian, who was clapping on the stage in reaction to Tomko shoving Styles... A highlight video recapped the show... Tomko vs. Angle was hyped for next week...
