9/18 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Mick Foley makes his TNA television debut, A.J. Styles and Christian Cage vs. The Motor City Machine Guns
Sep 18, 2008 - 10:01 PM |
TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, FL
[Q1] Footage aired from No Surrender; unfortunately, there was no sign of the girl on girl action that interrupted the Styles vs. Trigg MMA fight. Tonight's show is entitled, "The Return of Double J."...
The opening video aired. Mike Tenay and Don West welcomed us to the show. They ran down tonight's card and fireworks lit up the Impact Zone...
Samoa Joe came out to the ring in jeans and a t-shirt with the belt over his right shoulder. He also had quite the black eye. Tenay informed us that Samoa Joe would defend the title against Sting at Bound for Glory...
Joe put over Christian Cage and Kurt Angle as two of the best wrestlers in the world. He then called out Sting for having tea parties with his kids while he, Cage, and Angle busted their asses at the PPV. "Look at my eye Sting. When was the last time you bled for TNA Sting?" Joe said Sting would be asking for Joe's respect at Bound for Glory. Joe said it would be show time and Sting could kiss Joe's ass...
Twill's Two Cents: Nice intensity here by Joe in his promo. The crowd is still reluctant to boo Sting but they are definitely behind Joe.
Jeff Jarrett drove himself up to the arena. Jeremy Borash asked him why he came back to TNA. Jarrett said he had something to say and hoped Sting was listening... [C]
Tenay and West were yapping about the show when Kurt Angle's music hit. Angle came out to the announce table and said while Jarrett had a message for Sting, he had a message for Jarrett. He then said he was going to rip his gold medal off of the neck of A.J. Styles...
Twill's Two Cents: Wow; I am shocked TNA Creative remembers that far back. How does Angle know Styles will be wearing the medal tonight?
While security restrained Angle, the Guns made their ring entrance. Cage came out next followed by Styles and Angle was nowhere to be found...
[Q2] 1. A.J. Styles and Christian Cage defeated The Motor City Machine Guns in 4:54. Styles and Sabin hit the fast forward button finishing with a great armdrag spot followed by a dropkick by Styles. Cage tagged but double teaming by the Guns allowed Sabin to hit a nasty running kick to Cage. With Cage in the tree of woe, Shelley hit a sliding dropkick and Sabin hit the hesitation dropkick for a two count.
Cage hit an inverted DDT on Sabin after Sabin accidentally hit Shelley with an ensiguiri. After all four men were in the ring and Cage took out Shelley, Styles hit the Styles Clash on Sabin for the quick victory...
After the match, Styles shook hands with both Sabin and Shelley. When Cage approached them, Sabin reluctantly shook his hand, but Shelley flipped him off. There was a confrontation but the referee broke it up...
Twill's Two Cents: Five minutes of fantastic action but I would have loved ten more.
A cross the line video aired featuring Booker T. JB interviewed Booker and Sharmell in Booker's locker room. Booker overdid his accent tonight but he talked about the disrespect shown by the young guys to established guys like Cage. He said Lethal was disrespecting the Macho Man Randy Savage. JB said he was honoring him. Booker said he would take care of Lethal tonight... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: It is funny that Styles is being treated as a "young punk" in this storyline, even though he is a three time world champion and has been in the business longer than Kurt Angle.
A video aired of the Steel Asylum, which will apparently make its return at Bound for Glory...
Lauren interviewed Sheik Abdul Bashir backstage. He wondered what John McCain and Barack Obama could do for him and not for America. He said the X Division title was step one. He used to be a peaceful man but now he is holding the belt hostage. He asked anyone coming after the title if they were willing to lose everything. He said he was because he has nothing left to lose...
Twill's Two Cents: Ugh.
[Q2] 2. The Prince Justice Brotherhood defeated Petey Williams (with Rhaka Khan), Johnny Devine, and Jimmy Rave (with Lance Rock and Christy Hemme) in 3:25. Petey tried the Canadian Destroyer but was closelined on accident by his own partners. Super Eric hit a top rope high crossbody for the win...
After the match, Devine and Rave attacked Petey and referee Shane Sewell. Sewell took his shirt off and aided Petey in beating up three other guys. Earl Hebner came in and Sewell looked very upset...
Twill's Two Cents: Rave, Rock, and Devine just got their asses handed to them by one wrestler and a referee. Enough said.
JB approached Sting backstage. Sting told Jarrett to speak now or forever hold his peace... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: Could you imagine Sting presiding over your wedding?
Mike Tenay hosted a "press conference" that awarded Matt Morgan and his DNA for being chosen to be submitted into space. It is called "Operation Immortality." There did not seem to be a lot of press there...
Lauren interviewed Morgan and Abyss. Morgan apologized to Abyss and said he was wrong for overreacting at No Surrender. Abyss laughed and pulled some of his hair. He presented it to Morgan as a gift. Morgan signed them up for a tag team invitational at Unforgiven. Team 3D approached and security stood in between both teams. Bubba dropped a bunch of funny lines and said 3D would be involved in the invitational as well...
[Q4] Jacqueline was walking through the backstage area and headed to the LAX entrance area... [C]
Jacqueline slapped Hector Guerrero twice. Hector went after Jacqueline but Beer Money attacked him from behind. LAX broke it up a few minutes later. Traci Brooks came out and demanded Jacqueline and Hector Guerrero report to Jim Cornette's office...
A Rough Cuts segment aired featuring Roxxi. Many of the face knockouts on the roster had good things to say about her...
Twill's Two Cents: These segments continue to give the fans a little personal description of some lesser known stars.
Sting made his way through the backstage area... [C]
Backstage, Traci made a six person tag team match between Beer Money and Jacqueline and LAX and Hector Guerrero. The losing team would lose their manager forever...
Footage of Sting's recent promos was shown. Sting came out to the ring. Sting said he wrestled 340 days a year back when Joe was sucking his thumb. He said "Joe" about a thousand times. Sting asked Joe what he was going to do in fifteen years when disrespect smacked him in the face. He said he learned from Magnum TA, Nikita Koloff, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, and Tully Blanchard. Sting said Bound for Glory would be showtime... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: Good promo by Sting; not as good as Joe's but good nonetheless.
[Q5] A promo aired for "Suicide" from the TNA Impact video game. Tenay and West plugged Bound for Glory and the rest of the night's card...
A cross the line promo aired with the Knockout division basically calling out the WWE divas...
JB interviewed Styles and Cage backstage. JB asked Styles why he did not stand up for Cage earlier. Styles said JB was trying to stir the pot and that he and Cage were on the same side. Cage asked what side that was exactly. Styles said they were together. Cage was miffed that Styles was calling the shots for both of them. Cage told Styles to remember who put him in the spotlight... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: Is anyone else not intrigued by this storyline? Styles is being treated as a kid breaking into the business when he is a veteran and a multi-time world champion.
Lauren tried to apologize for what happened to Black Machismo. Machismo said he was going to kill both Val and Sonjay Dutt when he sees them. Lethal then turned his attention to Booker T. He said he was pissed that his honoring of Randy Savage was looked at as disrespect by Booker. He said he was going to kick Booker's ass all over the arena...
Twill's Two Cents: Good promo.
[Q6] 3. Booker T (with Sharmell) defeated Black Machismo in 5:56. Lethal knocked Booker to the floor and threw Booker into the guardrail. He hit a springboard missile dropkick on Booker coming back into the ring. He came from the top rope but Booker countered with a double side kick. Booker mounted Lethal and delivered multiple right hands before scoring a two count.
Lethal moved out of the way of the axe kick and hit multiple moves, including a short dropkick for a two count. Lethal's leg was grabbed by Sharmell coming out of an Irish whip allowing Booker to hit the axe kick for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Is the referee blind or what?
Lauren interviewed The Beautiful People backstage. Lauren with upset because she had a "blemish." Velvet and Kip took off for their match and Angelina went to see her dermatologist, who see pays by the hour. By the way, Velvet was wearing a shirt that says, "My boyfriend is cuter than yours."... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: Thank you baby!
[Q7] 4. Taylor Wilde and Rhino defeated Velvet Sky and Cute Kip in 4:13. The women began the match and Velvet tagged out after taking two nice armdrags from Taylor. Kip gained the advantage after Velvet sprayed something in Rhino's eyes. Velvet tagged in and worked over Rhino before tagging out. The girls tagged in and after Angelina Love tried to interfere, Wilde rolled up Sky from a Russian Leg Sweep position for the win...
After the match, The Beautiful People came in and took out Wilde and Rhino. With Rhino down, Kip left the ring and Taylor double closelined Love and Sky. Kip approached her but Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed came to the ring. Taylor went to the top and met Kong with a high crossbody on the floor... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: Taylor looked pretty good in this match; better than she has lately. The Beautiful People are not even brought down by Kip James, so you know they are a great act.
Back from commercial, Love, Sky, Kip, Saeed, and Kong put paper bags over the faces of Wilde and Rhino. The bags have pictures of the three members of The Beautiful People on them...
A video aired of Jeff Jarrett's journey since TNA first debuted. Footage was shown of TNA's first show, Jill Jarrett, and Jeff Jarrett hitting Kurt Angle over the head with his guitar last Sunday at No Surrender... [C]
[Q8] Jarrett was shown walking through the back before he made his entrance without a guitar. When he came through the tunnel, he had a guitar so I guess they keep one at the gorilla position for him...
The fans greeted Jarrett with a "Welcome back" chant. Jarrett looked genuinely moved. Jarrett said he was going to say something he has never said before. He said when we first saw Jarrett in TNA, we were watching the wrestler and the founder of TNA. After the demise of WCW, he had a vision to give young hopefuls a chance to shine. He wanted TNA to be the place where those who deserved a big break received one.
He thanked God, who received a small pop, his wife, a great financial partner, and each and every fan. Jarrett wanted to speak to Sting and wanted to do so face to face, man to man. Sting obliged and came out to the ring. Jarrett reminded Sting that Jerry Jarrett gave Sting his start in the business. Jarrett has been watching and listening to Sting. Jarrett said Sting was full of crap.
Jarrett mentioned Joe and Styles by name and said they literally carried the company on their backs while showing Jarrett the utmost respect. Jarrett said WCW went out of business because the veterans did not want to give up their spots to the young guys. He said guys like Sting, Angle, and Booker wanted to take and not give. He said this was not WCW, it was TNA. Kurt Angle's music hit and he came out to the ring.
Angle said he was shooting. He asked how Jeff could talk face to face to Sting but behind Angle's back. Jarrett said he had to step away two years ago and he handpicked one guy to replace him. He said bringing in Angle was the worst decision he ever made. Jarrett said Angle lost his family, wife, title, and gold medal. The only thing left was his dignity.
"Can I talk now; is it my turn, boss?" Angle said Jarrett left because he was over the hill. Angle called himself a younger and better version of Jarrett. Angle said he carried the company alone for two years and never received a thank you from Jarrett for saving the company. He called Jarrett and fans assholes. Angle challenged Jarrett to a match. Jarrett said he was the founder of the company, not a wrestler, and he has nothing more to prove.
Angle told Jarrett to get out of his ring because the ring is for wrestlers. Jarrett told Angle not to push him because he did not want any part of the pain he had been carrying around. He pointed to the big screen and Mick Foley appeared. "I think what Jeff is trying to say is: it's real, it's damn real. Bang bang!" Foley's smiley face on the screen closed the show...
Twill's Two Cents: That was one of the best segments I have seen on TNA television. I enjoy shoot style segments when they are done well and this was definitely done well.
