9/4 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: A.J. Styles vs. Christian Cage in a Four Ways to Glory qualifier, Abyss wrestles first TV match in months
Sep 4, 2008 - 10:00 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, FL

[Q1] Footage aired of Sting's very good promo last week. The title of tonight's show is "Sting vs. the fans."...

The video game opening aired. Mike Tenay and Don West welcomed us to the show while running down tonight's card...

Kurt Angle's music hit and he came out wearing a suit. Booker T and Sharmell came out next as Tenay pointed out that these two men are the current qualifiers for the Four Ways to Glory match at No Surrender...

Angle and Booker traded off praising Sting's speech from last week. They also put over each other as champions and gentlemen. Booker said the world title would be decided between he and Kurt Angle at the PPV. Angle agreed and the two shook hands.

Angle said they would take out the winner of the Cage and Styles match right at the beginning of the match. Without mentioning Jeff Jarrett by name, he said they would stick his guitar up his ass. It's real; it's damn real.

Christian Cage's music hit and he said he would defeat Styles tonight. He said they have had their problems in the past but they have patched them up. Booker called Cage a "poo butt" and then asked him to roll with him and Angle. He talked about not getting any respect from the locker room of young guys.

Cage asked Booker if he was worried about losing his spot. Angle told Cage they could do it the easy way or the hard way. Cage asked what the hard way was and Angle met Cage in the aisle. They brawled for awhile before Styles hit the scene. Jim Cornette came in and said if either Booker or Angle interferes tonight, they would lose their spot at the PPV. Cage and Styles shook hands in the ring...

[Q2] Jeremy Borash interviewed Samoa Joe backstage. Joe said Kevin Nash had Angle defeated but let his temper get the best of him. He said since Nash put his hands on him, he would do the same the next time he runs into Nash. He then turned his attention to Sting and told him to earn the respect he desires for once in TNA by wrestling and not preaching... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Good segment all the way around. Joe's promo was better than his previous efforts.

TNA Rough Cuts aired featuring Consequences Creed juggling college and his wrestling career. Creed said he wanted to learn everything he could from everyone, even the catering guy. Once again, the segment was very strong...

Lauren interviewed Sheik Abdul Bashir backstage and asked him why he has waged a war against the United States. Bashir said he was the victim. He said he does not hire illegal immigrants and because of 9/11, everything was taken away from him. He said he would harm innocent citizens to get everything back and did not love Lady America anymore...

1. Consequences Creed defeated Sheik Abdul Bashir in a number one contender's match for the X-Division championship in 3:35. The crowd was hot for this match; they cheered loudly for Creed and booed just as loudly for Bashir. Creed missed a splash in the corner and Bashir rolled him up using the ropes for the win. The referee restarted the match and Creed quickly won the match...

[Q3] After the match, Bashir attacked the referee and he came back to kick the shit out of Bashir. Shane Sewell looks better throwing punches than counting falls...

Twill's Two Cents: I hate restarts. They seem to be going down the road of the establishment screwing over Bashir.

JB interviewed Kevin Nash backstage. Nash said he was wrong last week and he hopes he can repair his relationship with Joe. Nash said if Joe will not listen to him, he might listen to Sting... [C]

Lauren interviewed Beer Money Inc. backstage. Roode said Beer Money would be the final two characters in the video game...

Twill's Two Cents: They have been in the company forever; why would there be any doubt of them being in the game?

Shark Boy, Super Eric, and Curry Man entered the area and after some smack talk, Roode shoved Shark Boy but nothing came of it. Tenay and West ran down the rest of the card for tonight...

A video aired showcasing Abyss and his journey over the past several months... [C]

[Q4] Lauren interviewed The Beautiful People and Kip James as they had an announcement to make. Velvet challenged Taylor Wilde to a one on one beauty pageant between Wilde and Angelina Love next week on Impact...

2. Beer Money Inc. (with Jacqueline) defeated Shark Boy and Super Eric in a non-title match in 2:18. Curry Man was supposed to come out, but he was being distracted by Christy Hemme backstage. During the match, they cut back to Christy and Curry, where the Rock 'N Rave Infection attacked Curry Man. Storm and Roode scored the win after the Last Call and Payoff...

LAX's music hit and Hernandez cleared Beer Money from the ring. Homicide, with an eye patch, threw Beer Money into the ring. Both members of LAX laid out Beer Money before celebrating with Hector Guerrero and Salinas...

Footage was shown of Abyss backstage... [C]

Brother Ray came out and accepted the challenge on behalf of Johnny Devine, who was not very happy...

3. Abyss vs. Johnny Devine ended in a no contest in 2:00. Abyss was easily distracted by Team 3D and Devine tried to take advantage. Abyss hit a chokeslam and picked up a chair. He was going to use it but decided against it. Team 3D hit the ring and beat on Abyss. Matt Morgan hit the ring to run off Team 3D...

[Q5] Lauren walked with ODB, who ate the beans and was suffering, trying to ask her about her match. ODB went into the men's bathroom and took a shit. Lauren followed her and ODB left the bathroom without washing her hands... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: That segment was a good metaphor for tonight's show. Lauren is a dedicated journalist; I will credit her for that.

Footage aired from earlier today with Lauren meeting Sting as he arrived. He blew her off and said absolutely nothing...

4. ODB defeated Raisha Saeed in 3:53. Both women fought on the floor before finally entering the ring. Saeed dropkicked ODB back to the floor. Saeed missed a moonsault and ODB followed up with a fallaway slam. She took a drink and hit a powerslam for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: I am not a huge fan of ODB but both women looked good here.

After the match, ODB tried to unmask Saeed. She came close several times but Saeed kept fighting her off. They fought off camera and ODB came back with the mask but we did not see Saeed's face. Awesome Kong attacked ODB from behind and was about to do more damage in the ring as the show went to commercial... [C]

[Q6] Kong hit an Implant Buster on ODB right as the show came back from commercial. Saeed put the mask back on and reappeared. Roxxi hit the scene and faced off with Kong. Saeed and Kong double teamed Roxxi. Kong hit the Awesome Bomb on Roxxi onto a chair...

A TNA promotional video aired with Kurt Angle narrating his various injuries and triumphs. Back live, Lauren interviewed Velvet, Angelina, and Kip in their dressing room. Angelina gave a free sneak preview to the three of them but not the audience... [C]

Tenay and West ran down the Bound for Glory card before airing a video going through the history between Christian Cage and A.J. Styles...

Back live, JB interviewed Styles and reminded everyone that he was not wearing Angle's gold medal. JB asked about Sting and Styles blew a gasket. Styles called Sting a bandwagon jumper. Styles said Sting should thank him, his wife, and his children for putting up with him while earning his paycheck. He said he respected Christian Cage and told him he was going win...

Twill's Two Cents: I love the not so subtle shots at Sting for collecting a paycheck he does not deserve. Pretty good stuff by Styles here.

Tenay plugged the Cage vs. Styles match and Sting interview... [C]

[Q7] 5. Christian Cage defeated A.J. Styles in a Four Ways to Glory qualifier in 12:33. Things started slowly but picked up at the ninety second mark. In a sick spot, Styles tried a springboard but Cage pushed Styles' leg away, causing him to fall awkwardly on the top rope. Cage then missed a move to the floor. Styles followed with a hurricarana... [C]

Cage hit a reverse neckbreaker for a nearfall coming back from commercial. Styles hit the moonsault inverted DDT for a very close nearfall. Both men exchanged right hands before Styles hit a huge dropkick following an Irish whip sequence. Cage hit a closeline and missed a frogsplash.

[Q8] Styles went for the Styles Clash but Cage countered into an Unprettier attempt. Styles hit the Pele kick. Both men fought to the top rope. Cage pushed Styles off and immediately followed in with a frogsplash, almost literally in one motion, for a two count.

Cage went to the top again and Styles backdropped him to the mat. He tried and missed the Spiral Tap. Cage went for the Unprettier again but Styles pushed Cage into the referee. Frank Trigg hit the ring and nailed Styles with a kendo stick. Cage hit the Unprettier for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Great match but that was expected. I do not love the finish but given the setup, someone had to lose.

A Jeff Jarrett video aired with Jarrett commenting on the history of TNA and his wife's inspiration. The series of "random" guitar shots were shown. An on screen graphic asked if the King of the Mountain has returned...

Sting was shown walking through the backstage area... [C]

Footage aired of Styles and Angle commenting on Sting, followed by highlights from Sting's promo from last week...

Sting made his entrance in face-like fashion. Sting made reference to the fact that he thought (the creative team hoped) he would be booed last week but was pleasantly surprised that he was cheered. Sting thanked the fans and said the fans were responsible for wrestling, TNA, and Sting.

Sting said a percentage of wrestling fans wanted to see Booker, Angle, and himself taken out respectively over the past few months. Sting challenged the fans to figure out where they stand and to stand for something. Samoa Joe entered the ring and said he was going to be standing on Sting's throat.

Sting challenged Joe to hit Sting in the back with his bat. Joe said he did not need Sting's bat or his respect. Kevin Nash came to the ring. He told Joe to do it without the weapons. Joe lunged at Nash and Sting hit him with the bat, followed by a Scorpion Death Drop. Jeff Jarrett's music hit and Sting cut the music. He said, "Jeff, you have my attention. Maybe we can talk next week Jeff." Tenay finally mentioned Jarrett by name and wondered what would happen next week...

Twill's Two Cents: Intriguing segment and a solid last twenty minutes to the show. It was anticlimactic the way Tenay said Jarrett's name without mention as to why he did not say it for weeks, but oh well.

What did you think of the show? The Cage vs. Styles match and Sting promo were definitely the highlights in an otherwise lackluster two hours. Let me know what you thought by sending me an email to dotnetrich@gmail.com.
